Sustainable Design and Evaluation of Children's Food Packaging from the Perspective of Buyers' Preferences

Consumer behavior is one of the key factors influencing product sales, especially in food packaging design, where green, organic, sustainable, and human-centered designs are more effective in promoting food sales. This paper aims to develop a sustainability evaluation method for children's food packaging. The study first explores the theoretical foundations of sustainability, establishing a systematic set of quantitative indicators and evaluation criteria. Based on this framework, the research gathers consumption behavior, rating data from 250 parents of various ages, professions, and income backgrounds. Using the CRITIC model, the study performs dimensionless processing and detailed quantitative evaluation of the indicators' comparability, contradictions, and information content to allocate weights for the sustainability evaluation metrics. Furthermore, the MABAC model is applied to construct a weighted decision matrix and boundary approximation area, ranking the sustainability of 20 representative children's food packaging design schemes (S1-S20). The results show that Scheme S1, after calculation using the CRITIC-MABAC model, has a total distance of 0.214 from the boundary approximation area, exhibiting the smallest deviation from the ideal solution across multiple evaluation criteria and achieving the best overall performance. Building on the optimal Scheme S1, this study comprehensively considers key elements such as eco-friendliness, safety, functionality, and educational value in the optimization of a sustainable design for children's fruit puree packaging. The research validates the practicality and effectiveness of the quantitative model through the sustainable design and evaluation of children's food packaging from a consumer behavior perspective, promoting sustainability design and optimization in the children's food packaging sector.

Beliefs, Evaluations, and use of commercial infant Food: A survey among German parents

Complementary feeding is a critical milestone for parents, who must decide the extent to which they feed their infants with homemade foods (HMFs) or commercial infant foods (CIFs). The current study focused on how parents perceive and evaluate CIFs and what drives them to use these products. Understanding the wide variety of factors that influence parents' decisions to use CIFs as a food source is crucial to helping them make more balanced food choices for their infants. Data from an online survey with 858 German parents revealed their negative perceptions of CIFs, particularly in terms of nutritional quality and texture, and concerns that CIFs contain higher levels of pesticides and heavy metals compared to HMFs, despite acknowledging the expertise of the infant nutrition industry. These perceptions were likely to be driven by the 'natural-is-better' belief and parents' desire for control over the ingredients in their infants' meals, contributing to their skepticism towards CIFs. Additionally, our study found that while many parents know traditional nutrition guidelines, they are less familiar with recent updates. Parents' benefit beliefs about CIFs and parents' trust in the food industry strongly influenced the use of CIFs, while infant age and parent gender had a less strong, yet significant influence on CIFs consumption. Overall, the present study offers new quantitative insights into the factors that motivate parents to use CIFs. Furthermore, it underscores the need for health authorities to improve their communication strategies towards parents concerning new dietary guidelines.

Infant food users' perceptions of safety: A web-based analysis approach

This paper aims to explore consumer beliefs about health hazards in infant foods by analyzing data gathered from the web, focusing on forums for parents in the UK. After selecting a subset of posts and classifying them by topic, according to the food product discussed and the health hazard discussed, two types of analyses were performed. Pearson correlation of term-occurrences highlighted what hazard-product pairs are most prevalent. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression performed on sentiment measures generated from the texts provided significant results indicating positive or negative sentiment, objective or subjective language, and confident or unconfident modality associated with different food products and health hazards. The results allow comparison between perceptions obtained in different countries in Europe and may lead to recommendations concerning information and communication priorities.

The Investigation of Mycotoxins and Enterobacteriaceae of Cereal-Based Baby Foods Marketed in Turkey

In this study, a total of 85 cereal-based baby foods with or without milk (four different brands; A, B, C, and D) collected from Ankara local markets, Turkey were analyzed for mycotoxins, total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB), and Enterobacteriaceae contamination. Baby foods were analyzed for 12 toxicological important mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2; fumonisin B1 and B2; ochratoxin A; sterigmatocystin (STE); deoxynivalenol (DON); zearalenone (ZON); and T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin by LC-MS/MS multi-mycotoxin method. In addition to these mycotoxins, the presence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) was investigated in baby foods containing milk. The classical culture method was used for microbiological analysis. Consequently, at least one mycotoxin was detected in 69.41% of the total samples. The most frequently detected mycotoxins were STE (34.12%) and HT-2 (34.12%). However, AFM1 was not detected in any of the baby foods containing milk. Also, TAMB and Enterobacteriaceae were isolated from 30.59% and 10.59% of samples, respectively. As a result, it was determined that the mycotoxin levels in the analyzed samples were in accordance with the mycotoxin levels specified in the Turkish Food Codex.
