Anaerobic Digestion of Lignocellulosic Waste Materials

New insight into the spatio-temporal patterns of functional groups of hotspot inside the composting aggregates by synchrotron-based FTIR in hyperthermophilic composting

Hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) is a recently developed and highly promising organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) treatment technology. Investigation of organic matter (OM) dynamics in compost particle is thus crucial for the understanding of humification of HTC process. Herein, this work aimed to study the chemical and structural changes of OM at the molecular level during HTC of OFMSW using EEM and SR-FTIR analyses. Additionally, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) was also utilized to probe and identify the changes in chemical constituents and functional groups of organic compounds on the surface of compost particles during different composting periods. Results show that SR-FTIR can detect fine-scale (~μm) changes in functional groups from the edges to the interior of compost particles during different composting periods by mapping the particles in situ. In the hyperthermophilic stage (day 9), the extracted μ-FTIR spectrum reveals a distinct boundary between anaerobic and aerobic regions within the compost particle, with a thickness of anaerobic zone (1460 cm-1) of approximately 30 μm inside the particle's core. This provides direct evidence of anaerobic trends at compost microscales level within compost particles. 2D-COS analysis indicated that organic functional groups gradually agglomerated in the order of 1330 > 2930 > 3320 > 1600 > 1030 > 895 cm-1 to the core skeleton of cellulose degradation residues, forming compost aggregates with well physicochemical properties. Overall, the first combination of SR-FTIR and EEM provides complementary explanations for the humification mechanism of HTC, potentially introducing a novel methodology for investigating the environmental behaviors and fates of various organic contaminants associated with OM during the in-situ composting biochemical process.

Integration of Digestate-Derived Biochar into the Anaerobic Digestion Process through Circular Economic and Environmental Approaches-A Review

The growing energy consumption and the need for a circular economy have driven considerable interest in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste, offering potential solutions through biogas and digestate production. AD processes not only have the capability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also contribute to the production of renewable methane. This comprehensive review aims to consolidate prior research on AD involving different feedstocks. The principles of AD are explored and discussed, including both chemical and biological pathways and the microorganisms involved at each stage. Additionally, key variables influencing system performance, such as temperature, pH, and C/N ratio are also discussed. Various pretreatment strategies applied to enhance biogas generation from organic waste in AD are also reviewed. Furthermore, this review examines the conversion of generated digestate into biochar through pyrolysis and its utilization to improve AD performance. The addition of biochar has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing metabolic processes, microorganisms (activity and community), and buffering capacity, facilitating Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer (DIET), and boosting CH4 production. Biochar also exhibits the ability to capture undesirable components, including CO2, H2S, NH3, and siloxanes. The integration of digestate-derived biochar into the circular economy framework emerges as a vital role in closing the material flow loop. Additionally, the review discusses the environmental benefits derived from coupling AD with pyrolysis processes, drawing on life cycle assessment investigations. Techno-economic assessment (TEA) studies of the integrated processes are also discussed, with an acknowledgment of the need for further TEA to validate the viability of integrating the biochar industry. Furthermore, this survey examines the techno-economic and environmental impacts of biochar production itself and its potential application in AD for biogas generation, aiming to establish a more cost-effective and sustainable integrated system.

Optimization of biomethane production from sweet sorghum bagasse using artificial neural networks combined with particle swarm algorithm

In the face of international movement away from fossil fuels caused pollution menace, many research labs are rushing towards next big breakthrough via effective biorefinery development employing non-edible agro-residues as feedstock. This work aims to evaluate and optimize the methane potential of underutilized full strength sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB) via anaerobic digestion (AD). Biochemical methane potential assays are set up for SSB AD under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions at four substrate-o-inoculum ratios (SIR) 3, 5, 7, and 9 with pH 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5 and with 80, 90, and 100 rpm mixing speed over 50 days. SIR 5 produced the highest cumulative biomethane yield of 4.25 L methane g-1 VS with a shorter lag time of 7.5 days and technical digestion time of 24 days. The influence of physio-chemical parameters on AD process dynamics is supported with 16s rRNA metagenomic sequencing. Based on complete experimental data sets, two artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed to identify the relevant significance of process parameters and to predict bagasse methane potential. Further, the developed ANN model is integrated with particle swarm optimization algorithm to create ideal AD process operating conditions which maximize the target variable, biomethane. The trained and cross-validated ANN-PSO model showed good-fit-accuracy with R2 > 0.995 and demonstrated satisfactory performance in the biomethane yield prediction from AD of non-edible agri-residues.

Analytical Pyrolysis of Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus globulus: Effects of Microwave Pretreatment on Pyrolytic Vapours Composition

Pinus radiata (PR) and Eucalyptus globulus (EG) are the most planted species in Chile. This research aims to evaluate the pyrolysis behaviour of PR and EG from the Bío Bío region in Chile. Biomass samples were subjected to microwave pretreatment considering power (259, 462, 595, and 700 W) and time (1, 2, 3, and 5 min). The maximum temperature reached was 147.69 °C for PR and 130.71 °C for EG in the 700 W-5 min condition, which caused the rearrangement of the cellulose crystalline chains through vibration and an increase in the internal energy of the biomass and the decomposition of lignin due to reaching its glass transition temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed an activation energy (Ea) reduction from 201.71 to 174.91 kJ·mol-1 in PR and from 174.80 to 158.51 kJ·mol-1 in EG, compared to the untreated condition (WOT) for the 700 W-5 min condition, which indicates that microwave pretreatment improves the activity of the components and the decomposition of structural compounds for subsequent pyrolysis. Functional groups were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A decrease in oxygenated compounds such as acids (from 21.97 to 17.34% w·w-1 and from 27.72 to 24.13% w·w-1) and phenols (from 34.41 to 31.95% w·w-1 and from 21.73 to 20.24% w·w-1) in PR and EG, respectively, was observed in comparison to the WOT for the 700 W-5 min condition, after analytical pyrolysis. Such results demonstrate the positive influence of the pretreatment on the reduction in oxygenated compounds obtained from biomass pyrolysis.

Application of Bioelectrochemical Systems and Anaerobic Additives in Wastewater Treatment: A Conceptual Review

The interspecies electron transfer (IET) between microbes and archaea is the key to how the anaerobic digestion process performs. However, renewable energy technology that utilizes the application of a bioelectrochemical system together with anaerobic additives such as magnetite-nanoparticles can promote both direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) as well as indirect interspecies electron transfer (IIET). This has several advantages, including higher removal of toxic pollutants present in municipal wastewater, higher biomass to renewable energy conversion, and greater electrochemical efficiencies. This review explores the synergistic influence of bioelectrochemical systems and anaerobic additives on the anaerobic digestion of complex substrates such as sewage sludge. The review discussions present the mechanisms and limitations of the conventional anaerobic digestion process. In addition, the applicability of additives in syntrophic, metabolic, catalytic, enzymatic, and cation exchange activities of the anaerobic digestion process are highlighted. The synergistic effect of bio-additives and operational factors of the bioelectrochemical system is explored. It is elucidated that a bioelectrochemical system coupled with nanomaterial additives can increase biogas-methane potential compared to anaerobic digestion. Therefore, the prospects of a bioelectrochemical system for wastewater require research attention.

Value addition through biohydrogen production and integrated processes from hydrothermal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass

Bioenergy production is the most sought-after topics at the crunch of energy demand, climate change and waste generation. In view of this, lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) rich in complex organic content has the potential to produce bioenergy in several forms following the pretreatment. Hydrothermal pretreatment that employs high temperatures and pressures is gaining momentum for organics recovery from LCB which can attain value-addition. Diverse bioprocesses such as dark fermentation, anaerobic digestion etc. can be utilized following the pretreatment of LCB which can result in biohydrogen and biomethane production. Besides, integration approaches for LCB utilization that enhance process efficiency and additional products such as biohythane production as well as application of solid residue obtained after LCB pretreatment were discussed. Importance of hydrothermal pretreatment as one of the suitable strategies for LCB utilization is emphasized suggesting its future potential in large scale energy recovery.

Thermodynamic Equilibrium Study of Anaerobic Digestion through Helmholtz Equation of State

The growing attention regarding a more sustainable future, and thus into energy recovery and waste reduction technologies, has intensified the interest towards processes which allow to exploit waste and biomasses to generate energy, such as the anaerobic digestion. Improving the efficiency of this industrial application is crucial to increase methane production, and is essential from the economic, environmental and safety point of view. This study focuses on the thermodynamic modelling of a steady-state reactor as a flash unit, in order to determine the best operating conditions to produce the maximum amount of pure bio-methane. To this purpose, a new hybrid approach based on the Peng–Robinson cubic equation of state and on the Multi-Parameter Helmholtz-Energy EoS has been proposed. The simulations, performed using the developed algorithm at temperatures between 20 and 55 °C and at pressure values between 0.3 atm and 1.5 atm, point out that the fugacity of the mixture evaluated with the proposed technique is much more accurate and reliable than the one calculated with the PR EoS. In addition, this research has shown not only that the purity and the production of the biogas can be optimised by working at mesophilic conditions and at pressure between 1 atm and 1.5 atm, but also that it is not convenient to operate in a temperature range of 42 °C–45 °C, since about 20 % more H2S goes into the exiting biogas, reducing the CH4 amount and raising the post-treatment costs. Lastly, it has been seen that there is a significant water content in the vapour phase (∼5 %wt.), and this is a factor to be taken into account in order to improve the process.

Synthesis of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs)-Nanocellulose Composite and Its Thermal Degradation Studied by TGA/FTIR

At present, the synthesis methods of crystalline porous materials often involve powder products, which not only affects the practical application but also has complex synthesis operations and limited scale. Based on the mechanochemical method, we choose COF-TpPa-1, preparing TpPa-1-DANC composites. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a kind of crystalline material formed by covalent bonds of light elements. COFs possess well pore structure and high thermal stability. However, the state of synthesized powders limits their application. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are promising renewable micron materials with abundant hydroxyl groups on their surface. It is possible to prepare high-strength materials such as film, water, and aerogel. Firstly, the nanocellulose was oxidized by the sodium periodate method to obtain aldehyde cellulose nanocrystals (DANC). TpPa-1-DANC not only had the crystal characteristic peak of COFs at 2θ ≈ 5° but also had a BET surface area of 247 m²/g. The chemical bonds between COFs and DANC formed by Schiff base reaction appeared in FTIR and XPS. The pyrolysis behavior of the composite was characterized by TG-IR, which showed that the composite had good thermal stability. With the advantages of nanocellulose as a material in every dimension, we believe that this method can be conducive to the large-scale synthesis of COFs composites, and has the possibility of multi-form synthesis of COFs.

Renewable Fuels from Integrated Power- and Biomass-to-X Processes: A Superstructure Optimization Study

This work presents a superstructure optimization study for the production of renewable fuels with a focus on jet fuel. Power-to-X via the methanol (MTJ) and Fischer–Tropsch (FT) route is combined with Biomass-to-X (BtX) via an algae-based biorefinery to an integrated Power- and Biomass-to-X (PBtX) process. Possible integration by algae remnant utilization for H2/CO2 production, wastewater recycling and heat integration is included. Modeling is performed using the novel Open sUperstrucTure moDeling and OptimizatiOn fRamework (OUTDOOR). Novel methods to account for advanced mass balances and uncertain input data are included. Economic optimization proposes a PBtX process. This process combines algae processing with MTJ and depicts a highly mass- and energy integrated plant. It produces fuels at 211 EUR/MWhLHV (ca. 2530 EUR/t), a cost reduction of 21% to 11.5% compared to stand-alone electricity- or bio-based production at algae costs of 25 EUR/tAlgae-sludge and electricity costs of 72 EUR/MWh. Investigation of uncertain data indicates that a combination of BtX and MTJ is economically superior to FT for a wide parameter range. Only for high algae costs of >40 EUR/tAlgae-sludge stand-alone electricity-based MTJ is economically superior and for high MTJ costs above 2000–2400 EUR/tJet FT is the optimal option.

Primary Sludge from Dairy and Meat Processing Wastewater and Waste from Biomass Enzymatic Hydrolysis as Resources in Anaerobic Digestion and Co-Digestion Supplemented with Biodegradable Surfactants as Process Enhancers

Incorporation of various alternative resources as co-digestion substrates aids to reduce the consumption of agricultural crops for biogas production. However, the efficiency and limitations of these co-substrates is still not fully understood. Use of biomass waste remaining after enzymatic hydrolysis for high value chemical fermentation, meat processing and dairy wastewater primary sludge as co-substrates in an agricultural resource anaerobic digestion plant is tackled within this study. The results showed that anionic surfactants (<200 ppm) can be used to improve fat, oil and grease (FOG) solubility in water and, at the same time, enhance the biomethane potential of FOG-containing sludge by increasing it from 1374.5 to 1765 mLCH4/gVS for meat processing wastewater primary sludge, and from 534 to 740 mLCH4/gVS for dairy wastewater primary sludge, when agricultural digestate is used as a substrate and sludge loading is not more than 10% from the volatile solids loaded. At the same time, only 549.7 mLCH4/gVS was produced as 30-day BMP when 5% biomass hydrolysis waste was used. Biomass hydrolysis waste co-digestion with primary sludge from dairy and meat processing wastewaters has an antigenic effect, and separate substrate anaerobic digestion gave a better results, thus, showing that excessive combination of various waste resources can be inhibitory for biogas production and the appropriate substrate selection and combination is a technical challenge for the biogas industry.

Application of Bioelectrochemical System and Magnetite Nanoparticles on the Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge: Effect of Electrode Configuration

Conventional anaerobic digestion is currently challenged by limited degradability and low methane production. Herein, it is proposed that magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) and bioelectrochemical systems can be employed for the improvement of organic content degradation. In this study, the effect of electrode configuration was examined through the application of a bioelectrochemical system and Fe3O4-NPs in anaerobic digestion (AD). A microbial electrolysis cell with cylindrical electrodes (MECC) and a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with rectangular electrodes were compared against the traditional AD process. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out using digesters with a working volume of 800 mL charged with 300 mL inoculum, 500 mL substrate, and 1 g Fe3O4-NPs. The electrodes (zinc and copper) of both digesters were inserted inside the BMPs and were powered with 0.4 V for 30 days at 40 °C. The MECC performed better, improving degradability, with enhanced methane percentage (by 49% > 39.1% of the control), and reduced water pollutants (chemical-oxygen demand, total organic carbon, total suspended solids, turbidity, and color) by more than 88.6%. The maximum current density was 33.3 mA/m2, and the coulombic efficiency was 54.4%. The MECC showed a remarkable potential to maximize methane enhancement and pollution removal by adjusting the electrode configuration.

Assessment of the Pretreatments and Bioconversion of Lignocellulosic Biomass Recovered from the Husk of the Cocoa Pod

The production of biofuels (biogas, ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, and solid fuels, etc.), beginning with cocoa pod husk (CPH), is a way for obtaining a final product from the use of the principal waste product of the cocoa industry. However, there are limitations to the bioconversion of the material due to its structural components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin). Currently, CPH pretreatment methods are considered a good approach towards the improvement of both the degradation process and the production of biogas or ethanol. The present document aims to set out the different methods for pretreating lignocellulosic material, which are: physical (grinding and extrusion, among others); chemical (acids and alkaline); thermochemical (pyrolysis); ionic liquid (salts); and biological (microorganism) to improve biofuel production. The use of CPH as a substrate in bioconversion processes is a viable and promising option, despite the limitations of each pretreatment method.

Co-digestion of municipal solid waste with lignocellulosic waste in mesophilic Environment

The present study deals with the dual problem of municipal solid waste and lignocellulosic waste in which authors tried to use these two waste materials as clean and renewable energy source. In the present study, anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste and lignocellulosic waste in varying combinations was carried out. Five-set of experiments (S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5) under mesophilic conditions were conducted in batch reactors. From all the combinations, reactor S3 (organic fraction of municipal solid waste: lignocellulosic waste, 1:1 ratio) was observed to be the best combination producing 70.09 ml concentration of methane out of 78.76 ml of biogas as compared to all other combinations. The increase in methane production rate was observed by 53.67% due to the addition of lignocellulosic waste. The decline in methane production at the end of the 50th day was observed due to a fall in pH, which created acidic conditions, thus inhibiting the conversion process. It was found that the mesophilic condition acted as a governing factor in the process of digestion.

Micro-Grid Oil Palm Plantation Waste Gasification Power Plant in Indonesia: Techno-Economic and Socio-Environmental Analysis

The utilization of new and renewable energy sources explicitly based on biomass needs to be increased to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. One of the potential biomasses of plantation waste in Indonesia that can be utilized is oil palm plantation waste in the form of fronds and trunks that are converted with multi-stage downdraft gasification technology. This study aimed to conduct a technical analysis, economic analysis, investment risk analysis, social analysis, and an environmental impact assessment of power plants fueled by oil palm plantation waste. The method used was the upscaling of a prototype of a 10 kW power plant to 100 kW. The results showed that it was technically and economically feasible to apply. The economic indicators were a positive NPV of USD 48.846 with an IRR of 9.72% and a B/C ratio of 1.16. The risk analysis predicted a probability of an NPV 49.94% above the base case. The study of the social aspects suggested that the construction of power plants has a positive impact in the form of increased community income and the growth of new economic sectors that utilize electricity as a primary source. An analysis of the environmental effects is critical so that the impacts can be minimized. Overall, the construction of small-scale power plants in oil palm plantations is worth considering as long as it is carried out following the applicable regulations.

Current Status and Review of Waste-to-Biogas Conversion for Selected European Countries and Worldwide

Growing world population and increasing population density are leading to increasing waste production with biological waste amounting to several billion tonnes annually. Together with the increasing need for renewable energy sources, waste-to-biogas conversion as a prime example of waste-to-energy technology represents a facile way of solving two problems simultaneously. This review aims to address the recent progress in the field of waste-to-biogas technology, which is lately facing intensive research and development, and present the current status of this waste treatment method both in technological and legislative terms. The first part provides an overview of waste and waste management issues. This is followed by a detailed description of applicable waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies and their current implementation in selected European countries. Moreover, national energy and climate plans (NECPs) of selected EU Member States are reviewed and compared with a focus on implementation of WtE technologies. In a further section, biogas production from waste around the world is reviewed and compared country wise. Finally, an outlook into the future of WtE technologies is provided alongside the conclusions based upon the reviewed data.
