Heavy Metal(loid)s Pollution of Agricultural Soils and Health Risk Assessment of Consuming Soybean and Wheat in a Typical Non-Ferrous Metal Mine Area in Northeast China

Identification of factors driving the spatial distribution of molybdenum (Mo) in topsoil in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region of Southwestern China using the Geodetector model

As a key component of plant nitrogen-fixing enzymes and a variety of human coenzyme factors, molybdenum (Mo) plays an essential role in supporting both plant growth and human health. Soil is a key medium for the cycling of Mo in the biosphere. However, the driving anthropogenic and natural factors governing the spatial distribution of Mo in soil and their interactions are not well understood. To determine the factors that affect the spatial patterns of Mo in topsoil, 6980 samples were collected from the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region (Linshui County, Sichuan Province, China). In this area, tall mountains are adjacent to deep valleys. Topsoil with enriched Mo is mostly distributed in mountainous areas. The most important factors influencing Mo in topsoil are soil parent materials (q = 0.482), altitude (q = 0.256), and soil type (q = 0.259). There are synergistic effects among the various driving factors [q(X1 ∩ X2) > Max[q(X1), q(X2)]]. The Geodetector model was used to validate the magnitude of the interaction effects. The contribution to interacting factors is nonlinearly enhanced when the contribution of a single factor was low (any two factors of aspect, road distance, land use type, and S). The contribution to interacting factors is enhanced bidirectionally when the contribution of a single factor was high (any two factors of altitude, soil type, soil parent material, OM, and TFe2O3). When the contribution of one factor is high and the other is low, the contributing to interacting factors is mostly enhanced bidirectionally and a few are nonlinearly enhanced.

Synergistic Reduction of Arsenic Uptake and Alleviation of Leaf Arsenic Toxicity in Maize (Zea mays L.) by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and Exogenous Iron through Antioxidant Activity

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play key roles in enhancing plant tolerance to heavy metals, and iron (Fe) compounds can reduce the bioavailability of arsenic (As) in soil, thereby alleviating As toxicity. However, there have been limited studies of the synergistic antioxidant mechanisms of AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) and Fe compounds in the alleviation of As toxicity on leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) with low and moderate As contamination. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted with different concentrations of As (0, 25, 50 mgꞏkg^-1) and Fe (0, 50 mgꞏkg^-1) and AMF treatments. Results showed that under low and moderate As concentrations (As25 and As50), the co-inoculation of AMF and Fe compound significantly increased the biomass of maize stems and roots, phosphorus (P) concentration, and P-to-As uptake ratio. Moreover, the co-inoculation of AMF and Fe compound addition significantly reduced the As concentration in stem and root, malondialdehyde (MDA) content in leaf, and soluble protein and non-protein thiol (NPT) contents in leaf of maize under As25 and As50 treatments. In addition, co-inoculation with AMF and Fe compound addition significantly increased the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the leaves of maize under As25 treatment. Correlation analysis showed that stem biomass and leaf MDA content were very significantly negatively correlated with stem As content, respectively. In conclusion, the results indicated that the co-inoculation of AMF and Fe compound addition can inhibit As uptake and promote P uptake by maize under low and moderate As contamination, thereby mitigating the lipid peroxidation on maize leaves and reducing As toxicity by enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes under low As contamination. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the application of AMF and Fe compounds in the restoration of cropland soil contaminated with low and moderate As.

Agricultural Structures Management Based on Nonpoint Source Pollution Control in Typical Fuel Ethanol Raw Material Planting Area

Increasing the promotion and application of biofuel ethanol has been a national strategy in China, which in turn has affected changes in the raw material planting structure. This study analyzed the effects of agricultural land-use changes on water quality in a typical maize fuel ethanol raw material planting area. The results revealed that an increase in cultivated land and construction land would also increase the load of TN (total nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus), while an expansion in forest land would reduce the load. As for crop structures, maize might have a remarkable positive effect on TN and TP, while rice and soybean performed in no significant manner. Furthermore, scenarios under the carbon neutralization policy and water pollution control were carried out to forecast the nonpoint source pollutants based on the quantitative relations coefficients. It was proven that maize planting was not suitable for vigorous fuel ethanol development. Reducing maize area in the Hulan River Basin was beneficial to reducing nonpoint source pollution. However, the area of maize should not be less than 187 km2, otherwise, the food security of the population in the basin would be threatened. Under the change in fuel ethanol policy, this study could provide scientific support for local agriculture land-use management in realizing the carbon neutralization vision and set a good example for the development of the fuel ethanol industry in other maize planting countries.
