The impact of resident demand on industrial carbon emissions and the transmission path: Evidence from Zhejiang Province

The industrial sector is the main source of carbon emissions in most developing countries. Little research has been conducted on demand-side factors and how the demand side affects industrial emissions through the supply side. Therefore, this article selects 2004-2019 panel data on Zhejiang Province, and a multiple linear regression model and a multiple mediating effects model are adopted to explore the impact mechanism and relationship between demand and industrial emissions. We find the following: (i) There is a significant positive influence of demand on emissions, and (ii) demand has an indirect inhibitory effect on industrial emissions through factor market distortion and an indirect promoting effect through technological innovation and energy consumption. (iii) There are two chain intermediary paths led by factor market distortion that have a negative impact on industrial emissions and a chain path led by technological innovation that has a positive impact.

Impact of environmental sustainability on open innovation in SMEs: An empirical study considering the moderating effect of gender

Sustainable development has emerged as a crucial factor enhancing the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in light of societal expectations and government regulations. Within this context, innovation assumes a significant role in this challenge, particularly for smaller companies facing greater obstacles in fostering innovation. These constraints have prompted both internal and external innovation initiatives, commonly referred to as open innovation. In this article, we scrutinize the influence of environmental practices on innovation endeavors, specifically examining whether the innovation strategy and its implementation facilitate the advancement of open innovation within SMEs. Furthermore, we explore the potential moderating effect of firm owners' gender on these relationships. The research model is validated using data from 543 companies in Ecuador, employing the partial least squares (PLS) method. The findings elucidate how environmental sustainability can promote the adoption of open innovation practices, with the innovation strategy and its implementation acting as mediators in this relationship. The impact of gender only manifests in the innovation strategy pertaining to environmental sustainability. In conclusion, open innovation stemming from the pivotal role of environmental sustainability emerges as a critical driver in augmenting innovation performance across various dimensions, such as quality, growth, efficiency, process enhancement, organizational practices, employee motivation, and acquisition of new product/service skills.

Role of hydroelectricity and natural gas consumption on environmental sustainability in the United States: Evidence from novel time-frequency approaches

This study analyzes time- and frequency-varying impacts of hydroelectricity energy consumption, natural gas energy consumption, and economic growth on environmental sustainability proxied by carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in the United States of America (the US) for the period 1965/Q1 to 2020/Q4. This study is the first of its kind to contribute to the current literature by analyzing dynamic relationships among these variables in the short-, medium-, and long-term at different time frequencies in the framework of a multivariate correlation, hence providing a more comprehensive picture about the impacts of these effective factors on CO₂ emissions. To meet the objectives of the study, Wavelet local multiple local (WLMC), which is a recent novel methodology developed by Polanco-Martínez et al. (2020), is applied. Moreover, the Wavelet coherence (WTC) approach is used for robustness check. The outcomes provide fresh insights into the long-term dynamic correlations among hydroelectricity energy consumption, natural gas energy consumption, economic growth, and CO₂ emissions. The study discovers a robust positive co-movement between natural gas energy consumption and CO₂ emissions and a negative correlation between hydro energy consumption and CO₂ emissions that is the most intense on the long-term frequencies. Furthermore, economic growth causes CO₂ emissions, which is evidenced by a positive relationship between both factors at short- and long-term time-frequencies. Supported by the outcomes of the study, the authors urge to suggest crucial insights and policy points for the US policymakers to shift from fossil energy to renewable energy sources to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG-7 and SDG-13, since they induce lower emissions.

Extreme Spillover between Green Bonds and Clean Energy Markets

This paper examines green bonds (GB), which have received much attention for providing funding for clean energy (CE) market reforms. We investigate the extreme spillover effects between GB and CE markets by using both MVMQ-CAViaR and Granger causality in risk methods over the period from 5 July 2011 to 24 February 2020. Since there are usually extreme asymmetric spillovers between financial markets, we examined whether this phenomenon exists between GB and CE markets. Our empirical analysis results find the significant extreme spillovers from GB to CE markets. In addition, we find that the upside and downside risk spillovers between GB and CE markets are asymmetric. The upside spillover is greater than downside spillover from GB to CE markets and the impact of GB on CE markets is greater. However, the extreme spillover from CE to GB markets is not significant by either the Granger causality in risk or the MVMQ-CAViaR model. Our findings have important implications for investors, policy makers and researchers.
