The Impact of Environmental Regulations and Social Norms on Farmers’ Chemical Fertilizer Reduction Behaviors: An Investigation of Citrus Farmers in Southern China. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
This study investigates how environmental regulations and social norms affect farmers’ chemical fertilizer reduction behaviors (CFRBs) and investigates the mediating role played by social norms and the moderating role played by social networks. As the analysis tool, a structural equation model is employed to analyze the data collected from a questionnaire survey with 402 valid samples of Chinese citrus growers. This study reveals that (1) environmental regulations and social norms have a significant effect on farmers’ CFRBs; (2) injunctive social norms are a partial mediator of the relationship between incentive-based environmental regulations and farmers’ CFRBs; (3) social networks play a positive moderating role in the relationship between injunctive social norms and farmers’ CFRBs; and (4) large-scale farmers’ CFRBs are more susceptible to the impact of environmental regulations and social norms than small-scale farmers. The result of this study provides a significant scientific foundation for the Chinese agricultural sector to develop policies to combat soil pollution in agriculture.

Abstract
The general objective of the study is estimating economic value of Lake Tana attributes using stated preference method of valuation in general and choice experiment method in particular. The target population was households who live around Lake Tana. The study has identified four attributes of Lake Tana (Water quality, fishery, irrigation, and recreation). The study has formulated three alternatives in which two of them were improved whereas the one is the status quo. Each attribute has three levels. The study has surveyed 238 households which were selected using multistage sampling method. Each respondent was presented with eight choice sets. Each choice set has three alternatives including opt option. The study has employed random parameter logit model for data analysis. In line with this model the study has conducted the extended random parameter logit model. The status quo (ASC0) is negative and significant both in random parameter logit model but positive and insignificant in extended random parameter logit model. This means that households have preferred the improved situation of the Lake Tana. This indicates that households are willing to pay to improve the current situation of the lake. Random parameter logit model shows that all improved attributes have positive sign and significant at 1% significance level. This means that improved situation of attributes that are identified by this study improve utility of households. Government should protect Lake Tana from any problem by raising funds from households since households are willing to pay to improve Lake Tana's attributes.

Abstract
The increased manure produced in animal husbandry, especially in beef cattle farming, pose a great threat to the environment. Resource utilization of the manure is an effective way to solve the problem and is conducive to the sustainable development of animal husbandry. Based on the theory of planned behavior, this paper attempts to construct a model of farmers' willingness to utilize livestock manure from behavioral attitude, subjective norm and cognitive behavioral control, and makes an empirical test through a questionnaire on beef cattle farmers. As the findings show, farmers' behavioral attitude, subjective norm and cognitive behavioral control have a significantly positive impact on the resource utilization of the manure. Among them, behavioral attitude exerts the greatest impact, followed by cognitive behavioral control and subjective norm. Farmers surveyed share almost the same attitude towards the effects of resource utilization, who may actively or passively take into consideration the corresponding economic, social and ecological benefits. The pressure from the government plays an important role in farmers' subjective norm, while less pressure comes from village cadres and neighbors. Finally, time or labor endowment and economic strength are the core constraints on the resource utilization of livestock manure by farmers, with relatively little constraint on skill acquisition.

Adoption of Multiple Sustainable Manure Treatment Technologies by Pig Farmers in Rural China: A Case Study of Poyang Lake Region. SUSTAINABILITY 2019. Abstract
The adoption of sustainable manure treatment technologies (SMTTs) in livestock production helps to reduce agricultural contamination. As such, understanding what determines farmers’ adoption of SMTTs is an essential prerequisite for the administrative handling of livestock pollution. Applying a multivariate probit model on a cross-sectional data set of 686 pig farmers in Poyang Lake Region in China, this study discovered that two key factors influencing farmers’ decisions to adopt multiple SMTTs are off-farm labor and environmental awareness. In other words, households with a higher share of off-farm labor are less likely to adopt SMTTs. Farmers with higher environmental awareness are more likely to adopt SMTTs. The results also revealed that because of the inappropriateness of government subsidy and insufficient technical training, the impact of Chinese government subsidy on the adoption of biogas technology is negligible, but the subsidy on composting greatly helps to promote the adoption of composting technology. We also found a substitution effect and complementary effects between different SMTTs. These findings can improve policymakers’ understanding of farmers’ joint adoption decisions. It also helps policymakers to optimize subsidy strategies to encourage farmers’ adoption of SMTTs in rural China.

Abstract
Odor emissions represent one of the important issues of aerobic composting. The addition of microbial agents to compost is an important method for solving this problem, but this process is often unstable when a single microbial agent is added to the compost. Therefore, in this study, five treatments comprising different proportions of Bacillus stearothermophilus, Candida utilis, and Bacillus subtilis were tested to determine the best combination of the three microbial agents for ammonia reduction, as follows: control group (CK), 2:1:1 (A), 1:1:2 (B), 1:2:1 (C), and 1:1:1 (D). Compared with the CK group, the A, B, C, and D groups reduced ammonia emissions by 17.02, 9.68, 53.11, and 46.23%, respectively. The total ammonia emissions were significantly lower in C and D than in CK (p < 0.05). These two treatment groups had significantly increased nitrate nitrogen concentrations and decreased pH values and ammonium nitrogen concentrations (p < 0.05). Throughout the composting process, the total bacterial number was significantly higher in C and D than in CK (p < 0.05). Therefore, it is likely that B. stearothermophilus, C. utilis, and B. subtilis compounded from 1:2:1 (C) to 1:1:1 (D) reduced the ammonia emissions due to (1) a reduction in the pH and (2) the promotion of the growth of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and the conversion of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen. This study provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the odor problem of layer manure compost and promotes the development of composting technology.

Large-Scale Grain Producers’ Application of Land Conservation Technologies in China: Correlation Effects and Determinants. SUSTAINABILITY 2019. Abstract
The quality of cultivated land has been seriously degraded due to the overuse of chemical fertilizer in China. Land conservation technologies (LCTs) have been proven to effectively address land degradation and improve land productivity. In this study, a multivariate probit model is applied to empirically analyze the correlation effects and determinants of the application of LCTs application using cross-sectional data collected on 690 large-scale grain producers from the Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The sample farmers were individually investigated by face-to-face questionnaires in the field that included around 400 questions. The results revealed that there are significant complementary relationships among farm manure application, commercial organic fertilizer use, and green manure plantation, and between formula fertilization and straw returning. Regarding the determinants, highly educated farmers and farmers with a large farm size and high incomes are more likely to adopt LCTs. The land size variable shows an inverted U-shaped relationship with formula fertilization, with an inflection point at 153 mu (10.20 ha), while showing an U-shaped relationship with commodity organic fertilizer use and green manure plantation technologies, with the turning points at 207 mu (13.80 ha) and 124 mu (8.27 ha), respectively. The results also indicate that extension services from agricultural technicians, agricultural technical information, and policy knowledge variables have positive effects on the application of LCTs, while the subsidy policy variable does not appear to have the expected effect. To promote the application of LCTs, suggestions include improving the extension system, selecting targeted farmers for extension training, expanding environmental policy advocacy to increase farmers’ knowledge about land degradation, and adjusting subsidies.

Abstract
<p>Discrete choice experiments (DCE) normally include in their choice sets an option described as the status quo (i.e. no change to current situation; SQ). The literature has identified Status Quo Effect (SQE) as the systematic preference of the SQ over the alternatives that propose changes over and beyond what can be captured by the variation of attributes’ levels. In this paper, we conduct a meta-analysis of DCE applied in environmental policy to identify potential drivers of SQE. We find that accounting for heterogeneity in the econometric analysis, excluding protest responses and easing the choice’s cognitive burden reduce the presence of SQE.</p>
