Vulnerability Assessment in African Villages under Conditions of Land Use and Climate Change: Case Studies from Mkomazi and Keiskamma

An investigation into the disturbance effects of coal mining on groundwater and surface ecosystems

Coal mining disturbs surface ecosystems in coal mining subsidence areas. Based on the groundwater-surface composite ecosystem analysis, we constructed an ecological disturbance evaluation index system (18 indices) in a coal mining subsidence area using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Taking the Nalinhe mining area in Wushen Banner, China, in 2018-2020 as an example, the weight, ecological disturbance grade and correlation of different indicators were determined by implementing fuzzy mathematics, weighting method, and correlation analysis method. The major conclusions of this review were: (i) After two years of mining, ecological disturbance was the highest in the study area (Grade III) and the lowest in the non-mining area (Grade I). (ii) Coal mining not only directly interfered with the environment, but also strengthened the connection of different ecological indicators, forming multiple ecological disturbance chains such as "mining intensity-mining thickness-buried depth/Mining thickness", "coal mining-surface subsidence-soil chemical factors", and "natural environment-soil physical factors". The disturbance chain that controls the ecological response factors in the region remains to be determined. However, the ecological response factors are the most important factor that hinders the restoration of the ecology in a coal mining subsidence area. (iii) The ecological disturbance in the coal mining subsidence area continued increasing over two years due to coal mining. The ecological disturbance by coal mining cannot be completely mitigated by relying on the self-repair capability of the environment. This study is of great significance for ecological restoration and governance of coal mining subsidence areas.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Ecological Environmental Quality in Small-Scale Coal Mining Subsidence Area Based on Hierarchical Structure—A Case Study of Shendong Coalfield in Western China

Aiming at the problem that the current research is not suitable for the evaluation of the surface ecological environmental quality in a small-scale coal mining subsidence area, a model combining the hierarchical method and the weighted method was constructed to realize the comprehensive evaluation of the surface ecological environmental quality in a small-scale subsidence area. The results showed that the change in the water and soil environment caused by coal mining subsidence was the main factor affecting the quality of the ecological environment in the subsidence area; the evaluation results in the control area and uniform subsidence area were of grade III, which was at the “general” level, and the evaluation results in the non-uniform subsidence area were of grade VI, which was at the “poor” level. Coal mining subsidence has a great impact on the quality of ecological environment in a non-uniform subsidence area.

Climate Change Adaptation Influences and Barriers Impacting the Asian Agricultural Industry

There has been an increasing interest among scholars regarding the impacts of climate change on agriculture and possible adaptation strategies for farmers. Little attention has been paid, however, to reviewing adaptation initiatives amongst farmers in Asia. This article fills this knowledge gap by examining the current literature on Asian farmers’ perception of climate change, their adaptation strategies, key factors influencing their choices, and the barriers to change. A systematic quantitative literature review is undertaken of 48 papers taken from a range of sources. The review indicates that farmers’ perceptions of climate change have been consistent with the scientific data. It further identifies farmers’ adaptation strategies with regards to soil conservation, water management and land use changes. The review shows numerous factors influencing, and barriers impacting, farmers’ ability to adapt. Influencing factors were analysed and categorised into five groups: cognitive, demographic, social-economic, resources, and institutional. Barriers hampering their adaptive capacity were identified as: a lack of access to information, a lack of access to extension services, limited awareness and knowledge, and limited financial options. The review finishes with some recommendations for future research.

A Combined Analysis of Sociological and Farm Management Factors Affecting Household Livelihood Vulnerability to Climate Change in Rural Burundi

This paper analyzed the livelihood vulnerability of households in two communes using socio-economic data, where one site is a climate analogue of the other under expected future climate change. The analysis was undertaken in order to understand local variability in the vulnerability of communities and how it can be addressed so as to foster progress towards rural adaptation planning. The study identified sources of household livelihood vulnerability by exploring human and social capitals, thus linking the human subsystem with existing biophysical vulnerability studies. Selected relevant variables were used in Factor Analysis on Mixed Data (FAMD), where the first eight dimensions of FAMD contributed most variability to the data. Clustering was done based on the eight dimensions, yielding five clusters with a mix of households from the two communes. Results showed that Cluster 3 was least vulnerable due to a greater proportion of households having adopted farming practices that enhance food and water availability. Households in the other clusters will need to make appropriate changes to reduce their vulnerability. Findings show that when analyzing rural vulnerability, rather than broadly looking at spatial climatic and farm management differences, social factors should also be investigated, as they can exert significant policy implications.

Communities’ Livelihood Vulnerability to Climate Variability in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has experienced more than 10 major drought episodes since the 1970s. Evidence has shown that climate change exacerbates the situation and presents a daunting challenge to predominantly rain-fed agricultural livelihoods. The aim of this study was to analyze the extent and sources of smallholder famers’ livelihood vulnerability to climate change/variability in the Upper Blue Nile basin. We conducted a household survey (n = 391) across three distinct agroecological communities and a formative composite index of livelihood vulnerability (LVI) was constructed. The Mann–Kendall test and the standard precipitation index (SPI) were employed to analyze trends of rainfall, temperature, and drought prevalence for the period from 1982 to 2016. The communities across watersheds showed a relative difference in the overall livelihood vulnerability index. Aba Gerima (midland) was found to be more vulnerable, with a score of 0.37, while Guder (highland) had a relatively lower LVI with a 0.34 index score. Given similar exposure to climate variability and drought episodes, communities’ livelihood vulnerability was mainly attributed to their low adaptive capacity and higher sensitivity indicators. Adaptive capacity was largely constrained by a lack of participation in community-based organizations and a lack of income diversification. This study will have practical implications for policy development in heterogeneous agroecological regions for sustainable livelihood development and climate change adaptation programs.
