Specific Structure and Properties of Composite Membranes Based on the Torlon® (Polyamide-imide)/Layered Perovskite Oxide

Impact of Layered Perovskite Oxide La0.85Yb0.15AlO3 on Structure and Transport Properties of Polyetherimide

This study aims to improve properties of Ultem^® polyetherimide (PEI) by incorporating up to 2 wt% additives of the perovskite oxide La_0.85Yb_0.15AlO₃ (LYA). The structure of dense PEI/LYA films was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in combination with an analysis of their elemental composition using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The PEI/LYA films exhibit a two-layer structure. Contact angle measurements revealed hydrophilization of the membrane surface enriched with the perovskite. The transport properties were tested via gas separation and pervaporation processes. The separation selectivity of He/N₂ and O₂/N₂ gas pairs increased with the growth of the LYA content in the membranes. Pervaporation of a methanol(MeOH)-cyclohexane(CH) mixture was effective due to the high sorption of MeOH in the PEI/LYA membranes. The maximal pervaporation separation index was found for the PEI/LYA(2%) membrane.

Mitigating of Thin-Film Composite PTMSP Membrane Aging by Introduction of Porous Rigid and Soft Branched Polymeric Additives

This work was focused on the mitigation of physical aging in thin-film composite (TFC) membranes (selective layer ~1 μm) based on polymer intrinsic microporosity (PTMSP) by the introduction of both soft, branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and rigid, porous aromatic framework PAF-11, polymer additives. Self-standing mixed-matrix membranes of thicknesses in the range of 20-30 μm were also prepared with the same polymer and fillers. Based on 450 days of monitoring, it was observed that the neat PTMSP composite membrane underwent a severe decline of its gas transport properties, and the resultant CO₂ permeance was 14% (5.2 m³ (STP)/(m²·h·bar)) from the initial value measured for the freshly cast sample (75 m³ (STP)/(m²·h·bar)). The introduction of branched polyethyleneimine followed by its cross-linking allowed to us to improve the TFC performance maintaining CO₂ permeance at the level of 30% comparing with day zero. However, the best results were achieved by the combination of porous, rigid and soft, branched polymeric additives that enabled us to preserve the transport characteristics of TFC membrane as 43% (47 m³ (STP)/(m²·h·bar) after 450 days) from its initial values (110 m³ (STP)/(m²·h·bar)). Experimental data were fitted using the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, and the limiting (equilibrium) values of the CO₂ and N₂ permeances of the TFC membranes were estimated. The limit value of CO₂ permeance for neat PTMSP TFC membrane was found to be 5.2 m³ (STP)/(m²·h·bar), while the value of 34 m³(STP)/(m²·h·bar) or 12,600 GPU was achieved for TFC membrane containing 4 wt% cross-linked PEI, and 30 wt% PAF-11. Based on the N₂ adsorption isotherms data, it was calculated that the reduction of the free volume was 1.5-3 times higher in neat PTMSP compared to the modified one. Bearing in mind the pronounced mitigation of physical aging by the introduction of both types of fillers, the developed high-performance membranes have great potential as support for the coating of an ultrathin, selective layer for gas separation.

Application of Cyclized Polyacrylonitrile for Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling Mitigation

In this study, novel composites were produced by blending partially cyclized polyacrylonitrile (cPAN) and poly(amide-imide) (PAI) in N-methylpyrrolidone in order to fabricate asymmetric membranes via phase inversion method. The compatibility of PAI and cPAN through possible intermolecular interaction was examined by quantum chemical calculations. The composite membranes were characterized by FTIR, SEM, contact angle measurements, etc. A considerable reduction in the contact angles of water and ethylene glycol (EG) was observed after adding cPAN to the PAI membrane, which is evidence of improved membrane hydrophilicity. Membrane transport properties were investigated in ultrafiltration tests by measuring the pure water flux, rejection of proteins, and flux recovery ratio (FRR). The best properties were found for the membrane containing 5 wt% cPAN; an increase in BSA rejection and a remarkable increase in FRR were observed, which can be explained by the hydrophilization of the membrane surface provided by the presence of cPAN.

Physical-Chemical Exfoliation of n-Alkylamine Derivatives of Layered Perovskite-like Oxide H2K0.5Bi2.5Ti4O13 into Nanosheets

In the present work, we report the results on exfoliation and coating formation of inorganic–organic hybrids based on the layered perovskite-like bismuth titanate H₂K_0.5Bi_2.5Ti₄O₁₃·H₂O that could be prepared by a simple ion exchange reaction from a Ruddlesden–Popper phase K_2.5Bi_2.5Ti₄O₁₃. The inorganic–organic hybrids were synthesized by intercalation reactions. Exfoliation into nanosheets was performed for the starting hydrated protonated titanate and for the derivatives intercalated by n-alkylamines to study the influence of preliminary intercalation on exfoliation efficiency. The selected precursors were exfoliated in aqueous solutions of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide using facile stirring and ultrasonication. The suspensions of nanosheets obtained were characterized using UV–vis spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, and gravimetry. Nanosheets were coated on preliminarily polyethyleneimine-covered Si substrates using a self-assembly procedure and studied using atomic force and scanning electron microscopy.
