Elastic Origin of the Unsymmetrical Thermal Hysteresis in Spin Crossover Materials: Evidence of Symmetry Breaking

Preliminary observations of the interplay of radiation damage with spin crossover

Intense synchrotron radiation makes time-resolved structural experiments with increasingly finer time sampling possible. On the other hand, radiation heating, radiation-induced volume change and structural disorder become more frequent. Temperature, volume change and disorder are known to be coupled with equilibrium in molecular spin complexes, balancing between two or more spin state configurations. Combining single-crystal diffraction and synchrotron radiation it is illustrated how the radiation damage and associated effects can affect the spin crossover process and may serve as yet another tool to further manipulate the spin crossover properties.

Pressure-induced multi-step and self-organized spin states in an electro-elastic model for spin-crossover solids

Spin transition materials are known to exhibit a rich variety of behaviors under several stimuli, among which pressure leads to major changes in their electronic and elastic properties. From an experimental point of view, thermal spin transitions under isotropic pressure showed transformations from (i) hysteretic to continuous transformations where the hysteresis width vanishes beyond some threshold pressure value; this is the conventional case. In several other cases very pathological and unexpected behaviours emerged, like (ii) persistent hysteresis under pressure; (iii) non-uniform behavior of the thermal hysteresis width which first increases with pressure and then decreases and vanishes at higher pressures; (iv) furthermore, double step transitions induced by pressure are also often obtained, where the pressure triggers the appearance of a plateau during the thermal transition, leading to two-step transitions, and finally (v) other non-conventional re-entrant transitions, where the thermal hysteresis vanishes at some pressure and then reappears at higher pressure values are also observed. In the present theoretical study, we investigate this problem with an electro-elastic description of the spin-crossover phenomenon by solving the Hamiltonian using a Monte Carlo technique. The pressure effect is here introduced directly in the lattice parameters, the elastic constants and ligand field energy. By considering spin state-dependent compressibility, we demonstrate that a large panel of experimental observations can be qualitatively described with this model. Among them, we quote (i) the conventional pressure effect decreasing the hysteresis width, (ii) the unconventional cases with pressure causing a non-monotonous behavior of the hysteresis width, (iii) re-entrant, as well as (iv) double step transitions accompanied with various types of spin state self-organization in the plateau regions.

Spin transition and symmetry-breaking in new mononuclear FeII tren-complexes with up to 38 K hysteresis around room temperature

New FeII complexes based on the well-known tripodand ligand type undergo abrupt hysteretic spin transition due to the symmetry-breaking in the room temperature region.

Elastic Modeling of Two-Step Transitions in Sterically Frustrated 1D Binuclear Spin-Crossover Chains

Among the large family of spin-crossover materials, binuclear systems play an important role due to their specific molecular configurations, allowing the presence of multi-step transitions and elastic frustration. Although this issue benefited from a significant number of spin-based theories, there is almost no elastic description of the spin transition phenomenon in binuclear systems. To overcome this deficiency, in this work we develop the first elastic modeling of thermal properties of binuclear spin-crossover solids. At this end, we investigated a finite spin-crossover open chain constituted of elastically coupled binuclear (A = B) blocks, ⋯A=B−A=B−A=B⋯, in which the considered equivalent A and B sites may occupy two configurations, namely low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. The sites of the binuclear unit interact via an intramolecular spring and couple to the neighboring binuclear units via other springs. The model also includes the change of length inside and between the binuclear units subsequent to the spin state changes. When injecting an elastic frustration inside the binuclear unit in the LS state, competing interactions between the intra- and the inter-binuclear couplings emerge. The latter shows that according to the intra- and inter-binuclear elastic constants and the strength of the frustration, multi-step transitions are derived, for which a specific self-organization of type (HS = HS)-(LS-LS)-(HS = HS)⋯ is revealed and discussed. Finally, we have also studied the relaxation of the metastable photoinduced HS states at low temperature, in which two relaxation regimes with transient self-organized states were identified when monitoring the elastic frustration rate or the ratio of intra- and intermolecular elastic interactions. These behaviors are reminiscent of the thermal dependence of the order parameters of the system. The present model opens several possibilities of extensions of elastic frustrations acting in polynuclear spin-crossover systems, which may lead to other types of spin-state self-organizations and relaxation dynamics.
