Abstract
Bacillus cereus is a foodborne pathogen that induces vomiting and diarrhea in affected individuals. It exhibits resistance to traditional sterilization methods and has a high contamination rate in dairy products and rice. Therefore, the development of a new food safety controlling strategy is necessary. In this research, we isolated and identified a novel phage named vB_BceP_LY3, which belongs to a new genus of the subfamily Northropvirinae. This phage demonstrates a short latency period and remains stable over a wide range of temperatures (4-60 °C) and pH levels (4-11). The 28,124 bp genome of LY3 does not contain any antibiotic-resistance genes or virulence factors. With regards to its antibacterial properties, LY3 not only effectively inhibits the growth of B. cereus in TSB (tryptic soy broth), but also demonstrates significant inhibitory effects in various food matrices. Specifically, LY3 treatment at 4 °C with a high MOI (MOI = 10,000) can maintain B. cereus levels below the detection limit for up to 24 h in milk. LY3 represents a safe and promising biocontrol agent against B. cereus, possessing long-term antibacterial capabilities and stability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study intended to isolate a Vibrio-particular phage from the natural environment, analyse its characteristics and genome sequence, and investigate its reduction effect on V. parahaemolyticus biofilm as a biocontrol agent in squid and mackerel. METHODS Among 21 phages, phage CAU_VPP01, isolated from beach mud, was chosen for further experiments based on host range and EOP tests. When examining the reduction effect of phage CAU_VPP01 against Vibrio parahaemolyticus biofilms on surfaces (stainless steel [SS] and polyethylene terephthalate [PET]) and food surfaces (squid and mackerel). RESULTS The phage showed the most excellent reduction effect at a multiplicity-of-infection (MOI) 10. Three-dimensional images acquired with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analysis were quantified using COMSTAT, which showed that biomass, average thickness, and roughness coefficient decreased when treated with the phage. Colour and texture analysis confirmed that the quality of squid and mackerel was maintained after the phage treatment. Finally, a comparison of gene expression levels determined by qRT-PCR analysis showed that the phage treatment induced a decrease in the gene expression of flaA, vp0962, andluxS, as examples. CONCLUSION This study indicated that Vibrio-specific phage CAU_VPP01 effectively controlled V. parahaemolyticus biofilms under various conditions and confirmed that the isolated phage could possibly be used as an effective biocontrol weapon in the seafood manufacturing industry.

Abstract
Pseudomonas syringae is a gram-negative plant pathogen that infects plants such as tomato and poses a threat to global crop production. In this study, a novel lytic phage infecting P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000, named phage D6, was isolated and characterized from sediments in a karst cave. The latent period of phage D6 was found to be 60 min, with a burst size of 16 plaque-forming units per cell. Phage D6 was stable at temperatures between 4 and 40 °C but lost infectivity when heated to 70 °C. Its infectivity was unaffected at pH 6-10 but became inactivated at pH ≤ 5 or ≥ 12. The genome of phage D6 is a linear double-stranded DNA of 307,402 bp with a G + C content of 48.43%. There is a codon preference between phage D6 and its host, and the translation of phage D6 gene may not be entirely dependent on the tRNA library provided by the host. A total of 410 open reading frames (ORFs) and 14 tRNAs were predicted in its genome, with 92 ORFs encoding proteins with predicted functions. Phage D6 showed low genomic similarity to known phage genomes in the GenBank and Viral sequence databases. Genomic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that phage D6 is a novel phage. The tomato plants were first injected with phage D6, and subsequently with Pst DC3000, using the foliar spraying and root drenching inoculum approach. Results obtained after 14 days indicated that phage D6 inoculation decreased P. syringae-induced symptoms in tomato leaves and inhibited the pathogen's growth in the leaves. The amount of Pst DC3000 was reduced by 150- and 263-fold, respectively. In conclusion, the lytic phage D6 identified in this study belongs to a novel phage within the Caudoviricetes class and has potential for use in biological control of plant diseases.

Abstract
Detection of viable Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) is a major challenge due to its significant risk to food safety and human health. Herein, we developed a phagomagnetic separation-ATP bioluminescence (PhMS-BL) assay based on phage VPHZ6 for rapid and sensitive detection of viable V. parahaemolyticus. Phage as a recognition element was coupled to magnetic beads to capture and enrich V. parahaemolyticus, shortening detection time and improving method sensitivity. The intracellular ATP released by chemical lysis using CTAB was quantified using firefly fluorescein-adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence system to detect viable bacteria. So, PhMS-BL method was able to detect V. parahaemolyticus in a linear range of 2.3 × 102 to 1.3 × 107 CFU mL-1, with a detection limit of 78 CFU mL-1 within 15 min. It is successfully applied to detect V. parahaemolyticus in spiked lake water, lobster tail meat, and clam meat. The developed detection strategy can rapidly and sensitively detect viable V. parahaemolyticus in food matrixes.

Abstract
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major foodborne pathogen causing serious illnesses. In this study, a new lytic bacteriophage SSJ01 that infects V. parahaemolyticus was isolated and characterized. It had a short non-contractile tail and belonged to the Caudoviricetes class. It rapidly adsorbed onto host cells, exhibited a short latent period, and has a large burst size. It showed lytic activities under a broad range of temperature (- 18 to 60 °C), pH (5 to 11), and salinity (0 to 6%). It contained 35 open reading frames with a G + C content of 49.16% without toxic or lysogen-forming genes. The MOI of 105 phage-treated group in vitro reduced the target cells up to 3.49-log CFU/mL at 6 °C and 3.47-log CFU/mL at 25 °C, respectively. In aquatic environments (6 and 25 °C), bactericidal activities showed a significant decrease within 2 h. Therefore, the bacteriophage SSJ01 has potential as a biocontrol agent to control V. parahaemolyticus in marine culture.

Abstract
Bacteriophages are currently considered one of the most promising alternatives to antibiotics under the 'One Health' approach due to their ability to effectively combat bacterial infections. This study aimed to characterize Vibrio species in hatchery water samples collected from an aquaculture farm and investigate the biocontrol potential of their bacteriophages. Vibrio spp. (n = 32) isolates confirmed by LNA probe-based qPCR were used as hosts. Three Vibrio phages were isolated. IKEM_vK exhibited a broad host range, infecting V. harveyi (n = 8), V. alginolyticus (n = 2), V. azureus (n = 1), and V. ordalii (n = 1). IKEM_v5 showed lytic activity against V. anguillarum (n = 4) and V. ordalii (n = 1), while IKEM_v14 was specific to V. scophtalmi (n = 4). The morphological appearance of phages and their lytic effects on the host were visualized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All three phages remained relatively stable within the pH range of 6-11 and up to 60 °C. The lytic activities and biofilm inhibition capabilities of these phages against planktonic Vibrio cells support their potential applications in controlling vibriosis in aquaculture systems.

Abstract
The emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria have necessitated finding new control alternatives. Under these circumstances, lytic bacteriophages offer a viable and promising option. This review focuses on Vibrio-infecting bacteriophages and the characteristics that make them suitable for application in the food and aquaculture industries. Bacteria, particularly Vibrio spp., can produce biofilms under stress conditions. Therefore, this review summarizes several anti-biofilm mechanisms that phages have, such as stimulating the host bacteria to produce biofilm-degrading enzymes, utilizing tail depolymerases, and penetrating matured biofilms through water channels. Additionally, the advantages of bacteriophages over antibiotics, such as a lower probability of developing resistance and the ability to infect dormant cells, are discussed. Finally, this review presents future research prospects related to further utilization of phages in diverse fields.

Abstract
Chryseobacterium indologenes is one of the primary causative agents of root rot of Panax notoginseng, which significantly affected plant growth and caused economic losses. With the increasing incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial phytopathogens, phage therapy has been garnered renewed attention in treating pathogenic bacteria. However, the therapeutic potential of phage therapy on root rot of P. notoginseng has not been evaluated. In this study, we isolated a novel lytic phage MA9V-1 infecting C. indologenes MA9 from sewage and monitored the formation of clear and round plaques with a diameter of approximately 0.5-1.5 mm. Phage MA9V-1 exhibited rapid absorption (>75% in 8 min), a latency period of 20 min, and a burst size of 10 particles per cell. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that the phage MA9V-1 is a new myovirus hosting C. indologenes MA9. Sequencing of phage genomes revealed that phage MA9V-1 contained a linear double-stranded DNA genome of 213,507 bp with 263 predicted open reading frames, including phage structure, host lysing, and DNA polymerase/helicase but no genes of tRNA, virulence, and antibiotic resistance. Our proteomic tree and genomic analysis revealed that phage MA9V-1 shares identity with Sphingomonas phage PAU and Tenacibaculum phage PTm1; however, they also showed apparent differences. Further systemic evaluation using phage therapy experiments on P. notoginseng suggested that phage MA9V-1 can be a potential candidate for effectively controlling C. indologenes MA9 infection. Thus, we have presented a novel approach to solving root rot in P. notoginseng.

Abstract
Enterobacter cloacae is a widespread opportunistic pathogen that causes urinary tract infection. The abuse of antibiotics enabled multidrug-resistant strains to spread. Bacteriophage therapy is a naturally, safe, and efficient alternative treatment technology against multi-resistant bacteria. In this study, a virulent phage vB_EclM_Q7622 (Q7622) was isolated from the sewage of Jiangcun poultry market in Guangzhou city. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that Q7622 had an icosahedral head (97.8 ± 5.6 nm in diameter) and a short, contractile tail (113.7 ± 4.5 nm). Its double-stranded DNA genome is composed of 173,871 bp with a GC content of 40.02%. It possesses 297 open reading frames and 9 tRNAs. No known virulence and resistance genes were detected, indicated that phage Q7622 could be used for pathogens prevention and control safely. Comparative genomic and phylogenetic analysis showed that Q7622 was highly similar to the phages vB_EclM_CIP9 and vB_EhoM-IME523. The highest nucleotide similarity between Q7622 and the similar phages in NCBI calculated by pyANI and VIRIDIC were 94.9% and 89.1% with vB_EhoM-IME523 respectively, below 95%. Thus, according to the result of nucleotide similarity calculation results, Q7622 was a novel virulent Enterobacter cloacae phage strain of the genus Kanagawavirus.

Abstract
Vibrio campbellii is a marine bacterium that is associated with luminous vibriosis, especially in the hatchery and nursery stages of penaeid shrimp cultivation worldwide, which has led to low survival rates of shrimp during aquaculture. Phage therapy has been reported as an alternative biocontrol agent which can reduce or replace the use of antibiotics and other chemicals. This study characterized a lytic V. campbellii bacteriophage, OPA17, originally isolated from bloody clams and investigated its biocontrol efficacy against V. campbellii infection in a model system, Artemia franciscana. Phage OPA17 lysed 83.89% of V. campbellii strains tested (n = 118) with clear plaque morphology. Some strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus were also infected by phage OPA17. Transmission electron microscopy and genetic features indicated that OPA17 belongs to the Siphoviridae family. The latent period and burst size of OPA17 were approximately 50 min and 123 PFU/cell, respectively. Moreover, it survived in artificial seawater throughout the 2-month study period and effectively destroyed Vibrio campbellii biofilms after 4 h of incubation. The addition of OPA17 significantly increased the survival of A. franciscana nauplii infected with V. campbellii. The genome sequence of OPA17 showed that it does not carry genes unsuitable for phage therapy. The phylogenetic tree analysis showed that OPA17 was closely related to the V. vulnificus lytic phage SSP002 (98.90% similarity), which was previously reported as a potential biocontrol agent. Accordingly, the results of this study provide valuable information regarding the potential biocontrol application of phage OPA17 against V. campbellii. IMPORTANCE V. campbellii is an emerging luminous pathogen associated with vibriosis, especially in marine shrimp hatcheries. Several strategies, including pond management and use of natural antimicrobials and probiotics, have been studied for control of this organism. Phage therapy is considered one of the effective biocontrol strategies against bacterial infections in aquaculture. However, there has been limited study of V. campbellii bacteriophages. In this study, V. campbellii-specific bacteriophage OPA17 was isolated, characterized, and investigated for its biocontrol efficacy against V. campbellii infection in an Artemia nauplii model. Phage OPA17 belongs to the Siphoviridae family and shares significant genome similarity to phage SSP002, a potential biocontrol agent against V. vulnificus infection in a murine model. However, the host range of OPA17 was broader than that of SSP002. Overall, we discuss the potential of OPA17 for phage therapy application in shrimp hatcheries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Members of the genus Klebsiella are among the leading microbial pathogens associated with nosocomial infection. The increased incidence of antimicrobial resistance in these species has propelled the need for alternate/combination therapeutic regimens to aid clinical treatment, including bacteriophage therapy. Bacteriophages are considered very safe and effective in treating bacterial infections. In this study, we characterize eight lytic bacteriophages that were previously isolated by our team against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. METHODS The one-step-growth curves, stability and lytic ability of eight bacteriophages were characterized. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) typing analysis and protein profiling were used to characterize the microbes at the molecular level. Phylogenetic trees of four important proteins were constructed for the two selected bacteriophages. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS All eight bacteriophages showed high efficiency for reducing bacterial concentration with high stability under different physical and chemical conditions. We found four major protein bands out of at least ten 15-190 KDa bands that were clearly separated by SDS-PAGE, which were assumed to be the major head and tail proteins. The genomes were found to be dsDNA, with sizes of approximately 36-87 Kb. All bacteriophages reduced the optical density of the planktonic K. pneumoniae abruptly, indicating great potential to reduce K. pneumoniae infection. In this study, we have found that tail fiber protein can further distinguished closely related bacteriophages. The characterised bacteriophages showed promising potential as candidates against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae via bacteriophage therapy.

Abstract
The increasing frequency of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae demands the development of unconventional therapies. Here, we isolated, characterized, and sequenced a Klebsiella phage PG14 that infects and lyses carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae G14. Phage PG14 showed morphology similar to the phages belonging to the family Siphoviridae. The adsorption curve of phage PG14 showed more than 90% adsorption of phages on a host within 12 min. A latent period of 20 min and a burst size of 47 was observed in the one step growth curve. Phage PG14 is stable at a temperature below 30°C and in the pH range of 6 to 8. The PG14 genome showed no putative genes associated with virulence and antibiotic resistance. Additionally, it has shown lysis against 6 out of 13 isolates tested, suggesting the suitability of this phage for therapeutic applications. Phage PG14 showed more than a 7-log cycle reduction in K. pneumoniae planktonic cells after 24 h of treatment at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 10. The phage PG14 showed a significant inhibition and disruption of biofilm produced by K. pneumoniae G14. The promising results of this study nominate phage PG14 as a potential candidate for phage therapy. IMPORTANCE Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the members of the ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) group of pathogens and is responsible for nosocomial infections. The global increase of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae has developed a substantial clinical threat because of the dearth of therapeutic choices available. K. pneumoniae is one of the commonly found bacteria responsible for biofilm-related infections. Due to the inherent tolerance of biofilms to antibiotics, there is a growing need to develop alternative strategies to control biofilm-associated infections. This study characterized a novel bacteriophage PG14, which can inhibit and disrupt the K. pneumoniae biofilm. The genome of phage PG14 does not show any putative genes related to antimicrobial resistance or virulence, making it a potential candidate for phage therapy. This study displays the possibility of treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates of K. pneumoniae using phage PG14 alone or combined with other therapeutic agents.

Abstract
In the present study, a novel lytic Vibrio parahaemolyticus phage, vB_VpaP_DE10, was isolated from sewage samples collected in Guangzhou city, China. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that phage vB_VpaP_DE10 has an icosahedral head (52.4 ± 2.5 nm) and a short non-contracted tail (21.9 ± 1.0 nm). Phage vB_VpaP_DE10 lysed approximately 31% (8/26) of the antibiotic-resistant V. parahaemolyticus strains tested. A one-step growth curve showed that phage vB_VpaP_DE10 has a relatively long latency time of 25 min and a burst size of ~19 PFU per cell. The genome of phage vB_VpaP_DE10 is a 42,871-bp-long dsDNA molecule with a G + C content of 49.19% and is predicted to contain 46 open reading frames, 26 of which are predicted to be related to functions such as phage structure, packaging, host lysis, and DNA metabolism. Sequence comparisons suggested that vB_VpaP_DE10 is a member of the genus Maculvirus within the family Autographiviridae. Morphological and genomic analysis indicated that vB_VpaP_DE10 is a novel V. parahaemolyticus phage.
