Effects of Short-Term Hand Tractor Operation on Upper Limb Responses of Users

OBJECTIVES

Continuous exposure to hand-arm vibration integrated with poor posture and forceful movements are known causes of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). In most related studies, force and vibration levels in experimental research is controlled. This study aims to determine how actual hand tractor field operation can affect the upper limb of users. It intends to characterize upper limb muscle activation applied during actual hand tractor usage. Lastly, it determines the immediate impacts on hand strength and perceived upper limb discomfort after the operation.

METHODS

We recruited 15 farm operators with a mean working experience of 20.1 ± 12.2 years. They were asked to operate a hand tractor on paddy fields for at most 8 minutes. Handle vibration was measured using a tri-axial accelerometer. The total unweighted vibration acceleration was computed and used to represent the handle vibration magnitude. Muscle activation was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG). Six sEMG sensors were attached to the dominant and non-dominant side of the extensor carpi radialis (ECR), bicep, and deltoid. Pre- and post-task hand strength and subjective discomfort rating were also taken.

RESULTS

The total unweighted handle vibration acceleration is 17.45 ± 7.53 m/s2. This exceeds the allowable safe value. Meanwhile, the percentage of maximum voluntary contraction (% MVC) of the muscles ranged from 6% to 14% with the ECR having a significantly higher activation (p < .05) than the bicep and deltoid. The post-task grip strength of the dominant hand was lower than its pre-task value (p < .01) while that of the non-dominant side did not vary significantly. There is a modest trend of higher hand discomfort of the non-dominant side on post-task than pre-task rating (p < .10). Although, overall, the perceived discomfort ranged from none to mild discomfort.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the study showed an indication that the effects of vibration on humans are evident even at mild muscle exertion, with the exertion predominantly concentrated on the distal arm area clearly affecting grip strength and hand discomfort. In such cases, future recommendations can revolve around the improvement of the hand tractor handle grip to impose grip comfort and ease.

Quantification of mechanical behavior of rat tail under compression

BACKGORUND

The development of vibration-induced finger disorders is likely associated with combined static and dynamic responses of the fingers to vibration exposure. To study the mechanism of the disorders, a new rat-tail model has been established to mimic the finger vibration and pressure exposures. However, the mechanical behavior of the tail during compression needs to be better understood to improve the model and its applications.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the static and time-dependent force responses of the rat tail during compression.

METHODS

Compression tests were conducted on Sprague-Dawley cadaver rat tails using a micromechanical system at three deformation velocities and three deformation magnitudes. Contact-width and the time-histories of force and deformation were measured. Additionally, force-relaxation tests were conducted and a Prony series was used to model the force-relaxation behavior of the tail.

RESULTS

The rat tails' force-deformation and stiffness-deformation relationships were strongly nonlinear and time-dependent. Force/stiffness increased with an increase in deformation and deformation velocity. The time-dependent force-relaxation characteristics of the tails can be well described using a Prony series.

CONCULSIONS

We successfully quantified the static and time-dependent force responses of rat tails under compression. The identified mechanical behavior of the tail can help improve the rat-tail model and its applications.

A novel rat-tail model for studying human finger vibration health effects

It has been hypothesized that the biodynamic responses of the human finger tissues to vibration are among the major stimuli that cause vibration health effects. Furthermore, the finger contact pressure can alter these effects. It is difficult to test these hypotheses using human subjects or existing animal models. The objective of this study was to develop a new rat-tail vibration model to investigate the combined effects of vibration and contact pressure and to identify their relationships with the biodynamic responses. Physically, the new exposure system was developed by adding a loading device to an existing rat-tail model. An analytical model of the rat-tail exposure system was proposed and used to formulate the methods for quantifying the biodynamic responses. A series of tests with six tails dissected from rat cadavers were conducted to test and evaluate the new model. The experimental and modeling results demonstrate that the new model behaves as predicted. Unlike the previous model, the vibration strain and stress of the rat tail does not depend primarily on the vibration response of the tail itself but on that of the loading device. This makes it possible to quantify and control the biodynamic responses conveniently and reliably by measuring the loading device response. This study also identified the basic characteristics of the tail biodynamic responses in the exposure system, which can be used to help design the experiments for studying vibration biological effects.

Acute physiological and functional effects of repetitive shocks on the hand-arm system - a pilot study on healthy subjects

PURPOSE

Exposure to hand-transmitted shocks is a widespread phenomenon at the workplace. Separate risk assessments for shocks do not exist in current international hand-arm vibration regulations, leading to a potential underestimation of associated health risks.

METHODS

In a pilot study approach, N = 8 healthy males were exposed to sets of 3×5 minutes of repetitive shocks and 1×5 minutes of random vibration, controlled at a weighted vibration total value of 10 m/s² respectively. Baseline and post-exposure measurements of vibration perception thresholds, finger skin temperature, maximal grip / pinch force and the Purdue Pegboard test were conducted. Muscle activity was monitored continuously by surface electromyography.

RESULTS

Shock exposures evoked a temporary increase of vibration perception thresholds with high examination frequencies. A decrease of skin temperature was hinted for 1 s^-1 and 20 s^-1 shocks. Electromyographical findings indicated an additional load on two forearm muscles during shock transmission. Maximum grip force and manual dexterity were not affected, pinch force only partially reduced after the exposures.

CONCLUSION

Physiological effects from shock exposure conform to those described for hand-arm vibration exposure in principle, although some divergence can be hypothesized. Randomized designs are required to conclusively assess the need of occupational health concepts specifically for hand-transmitted shocks.

The Effects of Altering the Center of Pressure in Standing Subjects Exposed to Foot-Transmitted Vibration on an Optimized Lumped-Parameter Model of the Foot

Many workers are exposed to foot-transmitted vibration, which can lead to the development of vibration-induced white foot: a debilitating condition with neurological, vascular and osteoarticular symptoms. To design effective prevention mechanisms (i.e., boots and insoles) for isolating workers from vibration exposure, continued model development of the foot’s biodynamic response in different positions is necessary. This study uses a previously developed model of the foot–ankle system (FAS) to investigates how altering the center of pressure (COP) location can change the biodynamic response of the FAS to standing vibration exposure. Formerly published experimental responses for apparent mass and transmissibility at five anatomical locations in three COP positions were used to optimize the model. Differences occurred with the Kelvin–Voigt elements used to represent the soft tissues of the foot sole: at the heel, the distal head of the metatarsals and distal phalanges. The stiffness increased wherever the COP was concentrated (i.e., forward over the toes or backward over the heel). The variability of the model parameters was always greatest when the COP was concentrated in the heel. This suggests future FAS models need to more clearly address how the soft tissue of the plantar fat pad is modelled.
