Influences on Water Quality and Abundance of Cladophora, a Shore-Fouling Green Algae, over Urban Shoreline in Lake Ontario

A statistical framework for testing impacts of multiple drivers of surface water quality in nearshore regions of large lakes

In nearshore regions of large freshwater ecosystems, complex biophysical processes across large geographic regions, combined with the common logistical challenges of data collection by multiple research agencies and shifting monitoring survey designs over time, present challenges for detecting and managing the influence of multiple sources of nutrients and pollution. We present a statistical framework using linear mixed models (LMMs) to test impact of multiple drivers on nearshore water quality of large lakes. Under this framework, we analyzed a 12-year dataset of water quality variables that were measured from a nearshore region along the Canadian shoreline of Lake Ontario (~86 km²), near Pickering and Ajax. Spatial interpolation showed that almost all water quality parameters decreased in magnitude from the shoreline to the offshore. Two exceptions to this nearshore-offshore gradient occurred in a region that extended ~8 km southwest from the outfall of the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (DCWPCP) where ammonia + ammonium (NH₃₊₄) increased and pH decreased slightly. Other LMMs combined explanatory factors into major groups (geographic proximities to shoreline tributary mouths and stormwater drains [inflows], tributary discharges, discharge or loading from the DCWPCP, and climate factors). These models showed that geographic proximity to shoreline inflows and/or tributary discharges were the most important drivers for most water quality parameters including concentrations of phosphorus, a key variable for regulating proliferation of harmful algae blooms and nuisance benthic algae in the Great Lakes. Air temperature was correlated with decreased phosphorus concentrations and nitrate + nitrite, whereas total precipitation and snow were correlated with increased concentrations of most nutrients except NH₃₊₄, which was negatively correlated with duration of lake ice cover in winter. Our framework highlights how influence of individual nutrient sources can be distinguished from climate factors within a dominant nearshore-offshore gradient in water quality within nearshore regions of large lakes.

Management of the Phosphorus–Cladophora Dynamic at a Site on Lake Ontario Using a Multi-Module Bioavailable P Model

The filamentous green alga Cladophora grows to nuisance proportions in Lake Ontario. Stimulated by high phosphorus concentrations, nuisance growth results in the degradation of beaches and clogging of industrial water intakes with attendant loss of beneficial uses. We develop a multi-module bioavailable phosphorus model to examine the efficacy of phosphorus management strategies in mitigating nuisance algal growth. The model platform includes modules simulating hydrodynamics (FVCOM), phosphorus-phytoplankton dynamics (GEM) and Cladophora growth (GLCMv3). The model is applied along a 25 km stretch of the Lake Ontario nearshore, extending east from Toronto, ON and receiving effluent from three wastewater treatment plants. Simulation results identify the Duffin Creek wastewater treatment plant effluent as a driving force for nuisance conditions of Cladophora growth, as reflected in effluent bioavailable phosphorus concentrations and the dimensions of the plant’s phosphorus footprint. Simulation results demonstrate that phosphorus removal by chemically enhanced secondary treatment is insufficient to provide relief from nuisance conditions. Tertiary treatment (chemically enhanced secondary treatment with ballasted flocculation) is shown to eliminate phosphorus-saturated conditions associated with the Duffin Creek wastewater treatment plant effluent, providing local relief from nuisance conditions. Management guidance presented here has wider application at sites along the highly urbanized Canadian nearshore of Lake Ontario.

A dataset of remote-sensed Forel-Ule Index for global inland waters during 2000-2018

Water colour is the result of its constituents and their interactions with solar irradiance; this forms the basis for water quality monitoring using optical remote sensing data. The Forel-Ule Index (FUI) is a useful comprehensive indicator to show the water colour variability and water quality change in both inland waters and oceans. In recent decades, lakes around the world have experienced dramatic changes in water quality under pressure from both climate change and anthropogenic activities. However, acquiring consistent water colour products for global lakes has been a challenge. In this paper we present the first time series FUI dataset for large global lakes from 2000-2018 based on MODIS observations. This dataset provides significant information on spatial and temporal changes of water colour for global large lakes during the past 19 years. It will be valuable to studies in search of the drivers of global and regional lake colour change, and the interaction mechanisms between water colour, hydrological factors, climate change, and anthropogenic activities.

Management Transition to the Great Lakes Nearshore: Insights from Hydrodynamic Modeling

The emerging shift in Great Lakes management from offshore to nearshore waters will require attention to complexities of coastal hydrodynamics and biogeochemical transformations. Emphasizing hydrodynamics, this work resolves transport processes in quantifying discharge plume and pollutant of concern (POC) footprint dimensions, the latter being the portion of the plume where water quality standards are not met. A generic approach, isolated from pollutant-specific biokinetics, provides first-approximation estimates of the footprint area. A high-resolution, linked hydrodynamic-tracer model is applied at a site in the Greater Toronto Area on Lake Ontario. Model results agree with observed meteorological and hydrodynamic conditions and satisfactorily simulate plume dimensions. Footprints are examined in the context of guidelines for regulatory mixing zone size and attendant loss of beneficial use. We demonstrate that the ratio of the water quality standard to the POC concentration at discharge is a key determinant of footprint dimensions. Footprint size for traditional pollutants (ammonia, total phosphorus) meets regulatory guidelines; however, that for soluble reactive phosphorus, a presently unattended pollutant, is ~1–2 orders of magnitude larger. This suggests that it may be necessary to upgrade treatment technologies to maintain consistency with regulatory guidelines and mitigate manifestations of the eutrophication-related soluble reactive phosphorus POC.
