Microbiological and Physicochemical Water Quality Assessments of River Water in an Industrial Region of the Northwest Coast of Borneo

Geochemical fractionation, mobility of elements and environmental significance of surface sediments in a Tropical River, Borneo

Miri River is a tropical river in Borneo that drains on flat terrain and urbanised area and debauches into the South China Sea. This paper documents the environmental status of this river, and provides an insight into the provenance using bulk chemistry of the sediments, and brings out the geochemical mobility, bioavailability, and potential toxicity of some critical elements based on BCR sequential extraction. The sediments are intense to moderately weathered and recycled products of Neogene sedimentary rocks. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the river favoured an upstream section dominated by fine sand, while the downstream sediments are medium silt. Based on the bulk geochemistry, the Miri River sediments are moderate to considerably contaminated by Cu, Mo, and As in the upstream and by Sb, As and Cu in the downstream. The potential ecological risk values are low except Cu and a significant biological impact is expected in downstream due to Cu, As, Zn and Cr. The mobility, bioavailability and Risk Assessment Code values for Zn and Mn are higher and thus may pose moderate to very high risk to aquatic organisms. Though a high bulk concentration of Cu is observed, the association of Cu with the bioavailable fraction is low.

Combinations of multivariate statistical analysis and analytical hierarchical process for indexing surface water quality under arid conditions

Novel methods for water quality indexing increase insight into the fitness of water bodies for different uses. We hypothesized that integrating multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) with the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) may provide a reliable estimation of water quality status. Hence, twenty water samples from canals and drains in the northern Nile Delta, Egypt were collected during summer, autumn, winter, and spring and analyzed. Data were subjected to MSA, including correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchal cluster analysis (HCA). The AHP was applied to derive weights of parameters implied in developing water quality indices for irrigation (IWQI) and fish farming (FFWQI). Human health risks due to exposure to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) via dermal contact were also considered. The average concentrations of water constituents were acceptable for irrigation, except sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and Cl^-. The dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, Cl^-, NO₂-N, NO₃-N, NH₃, and PTEs (except Zn) did not meet standard limits for fish production. The MSA revealed that water contamination resulted from human activities (agriculture, industry, and domestic wastes) and hydrochemical processes. The PCA indicated that SAR, Cu, and pH could adequately represent water quality for irrigation, while temperature, NO₂-N, Cr, and Zn could reflect fish farming requirements. The AHP provided consistent weights for the original and shortlisted parameters. The water quality varied from good to poor for irrigation and from excellent to low for fish farming. The minimum IWQI could adequately represent the IWQI (R² = 0.83) and thus reduce the time, effort, and cost for monitoring water quality. However, the minimum FFWQI showed moderate consistency (R² = 0.51) with FFWQI, implying that increasing the sampling size is essential for better performance. The hazard quotient of all PTEs was below 1.0 for both adults and children, indicating a safe limit. The potential cancer risk was acceptable (1.36E-06) for adults and safe (8.03E-07) for children. Results of this work would be a start point for efficient quality control programs in arid regions.

Effects of COVID-19 lockdown and unlock on the health of tropical large river with associated human health risk

River Damodar (India) is one of the most significant tropical large rivers and this river is carrying predominantly industrial effluents, urban sewage, and non-degradable chemical agricultural fertilizers. Several industries, cities, and townships directly depend on this important river throughout the year. It is highly essential to evaluate its surface water quality, characteristics, and improvement status during the COVID-19 lockdown and unlock phases. The major objectives of the present study are to analyse changing nature of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Fe) and microbial load (TVC, TC, and FC) of river water and to identify heavy metals impact on water quality and human health in pre, during, and after unlocking of COVID-19 lockdown. Here, a total of 33 water samples have been collected in the pre-lockdown, lockdown, and unlock phases. The results showed that decreasing trend of the microbial load was found in the lockdown phase. Heavy metal pollution index (HPI) illustrated that all samples are highly polluted (HPI > 150) during the pre-lockdown phase, while during the lockdown phase; HPI showed that around 54.54% of samples have been positively changed (low pollution level). During the unlock phase, 45.45% of samples were again amplified to the high pollution level. Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical cluster analysis indicated strong relation among heavy metals with faecal coliform at a 0.05% level of significance. Noncarcinogenic hazard index (HI) shows the higher possibility of health risk (HI > 1) particularly for children in all the phases and during the lockdown phase, 36.36% of samples showed no possible health risk for adults (HI < 1). However, HI of dermal contact showed no possible health risk for children and adults in the assessment periods. This applied research can definitely assist planners and administrators in making effective solutions regarding public health.

Nutrient Pollutants in Surface Water—Assessing Trends in Drinking Water Resource Quality for a Regional City in Central Europe

This paper presents the changes in concentration of seven biogenic indices in the Wisłok River water and determines the water treatment processes required in order to obtain water fit for consumption. The investigations were conducted during 2004–2013, and water samples were collected at a measuring-control point was situated at 67.9 km on the river at the surface water intake for the water supply to the Rzeszów city dwellers. Analysis of the research results allows for the forecasting of technological and organizational changes in the treatment processes of the abstracted water. It was found that only the mean concentration of Kjeldahl nitrogen exceeded the value admissible for class I, which allowed the Wisłok River water to be classified as class II with good potential and determined the water quality category as A2, which indicates the necessity for typical performance physical and chemical treatment. Downward trends in the contents of the tested nutrients occurred during the period of investigation, except for nitrite nitrogen. Statistically significant downward trends were registered for ammonium nitrogen, Kjeldahl nitrogen, total nitrogen and phosphates. The decline in nutrient concentrations in the water of Wisłok is a tangible result of the introduction of new standards of water resource management in the catchment, compliant with the European Union legislation.
