Impact of Lake Morphology and Shallowing on the Rate of Overgrowth in Hard-Water Eutrophic Lakes

Cyanobacteria respond to trophic status in shallow aquatic ecosystems

Small and shallow water bodies are particularly sensitive to adverse conditions connected with anthropogenic eutrophication. As model systems, ponds are a good object for ecological research and monitoring of global environmental changes. We examined cyanobacteria along with other groups of algae versus zooplankton and abiotic characteristics of water in 51 aquatic ecosystems exposed to anthropogenic pressure (from natural forest to highly disturbed field ponds) with 3 distinct trophic groups: meso-, eu- and hypertrophic. This study aimed to define how different levels of trophy affect pond-specific cyanobacteria assemblages and to identify species responding to particular trophic states. We demonstrated that trophic type determined the occurrence of certain cyanobacteria species. From among 78 identified taxa, shade- and turbid mixed adapted were the most numerous. Eutrophic ponds had the highest cyanobacteria species and diversity and abundance of zooplankon. Dominating species such as Chroococcus minimus, Anagnostidinema amphibium, Phormidium granulatum or Komvophoron minutum preferred mesotrophic, while e.g. Jaaginema subtilissimum, Limnolyngbya circumcreta, Limnothrix vacuolifera or Romeria leopolienis eutrophic waters and these were not grazed by filtrators. Only 3 species (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Dolichospermum circinale, Planktothrix agardhii) were associated with hypertrophic ponds. Therefore, we assume that cyanobacteria taxa have a high indicative potential to distinguish between trophic type of ponds. Reynolds Functional Groups also exhibit responses to changes in water quality. It was partucularly evident in the case of cyanobacteria representatives of codon M which was attributed to eutrophic ponds. Advancing our understanding about trophic preferences of cyanobacteria is crucial, especially in the era of global warming and the persistent issue of water eutrophication, when problems with harmful cyanobacterial blooms are intensifying. The research findings have ecological significance and management implications, highlighting the often-overlooked importance of pond ecosystems in maintaining overall water quality.

The influence of land use in the catchment area of small waterbodies on the quality of water and plant species composition

Land use significantly affects the function of waterbodies in landscape. Although there have been numerous studies on the influence of the catchment area on the trophic and ecological status of waterbodies, still is not reached an agreement on the width of the buffer zone that is necessary for effective protection of waterbodies. The aim of the study was to show whether small waterbodies are predominantly influenced by land use in the entire catchment area or only in the zone extending 100 or 200 m away from the shoreline. For two years the waters in six small waterbodies located in the Wielkopolska region (Poland) were analysed. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that the influence of land use, especially agricultural land, was much greater within the zone extending 100 m from the shore line of the waterbodies than in the total catchment area. Therefore, it would be advisable to move the border of intensive farming areas beyond the entire 100-m-wide buffer zone, or at least to reduce the intensity of agriculture and to introduce diversified and perennial vegetation creating effective biogeochemical barriers.

Linking land system changes (1980-2017) with the trophic status of an urban wetland: Implications for wetland management

The knowledge on urban ecosystem dynamics is being increasingly felt due to unprecedented symptoms arising out of urbanization. This study is aimed to assess land use-land cover changes (LULCCs) around a wetland ecosystem using high spatial resolution CORONA and Google Basemap satellite imageries. The imageries were processed by digitizing land cover features at 1:3000 scale in ArcGIS 10.1. The imageries were classified into nine classes, and an estimation of accuracy was performed utilizing the Kappa coefficient and error matrices. The overall accuracy obtained was 94% for the 2017 dataset. The key findings indicated a loss of 23% in the wetland area from 1980 to 2017. While in the vicinity, a significant increase in green spaces (706.2%) and roads (89.4%) was observed. Morphometric analysis revealed that the wetland has lost a surface area of 10.2 ha from 1980 to 2017. The maximum length (L_max) of the wetland was reduced by 722 m while the maximum width (W_max) decreased by 78 m. Bathymetric analysis revealed that the wetland is shallow with a depth ranging from 10 to 174 cm. The Carlson's Trophic State Index (TSI) of wetland ranging from 74 to 87 indicates hyper-eutrophic waters. Overall, the loss of wetland area, together with the reduction in morphometric features, low depth, and higher trophic status speak of anthropogenic pressures that are compromising the ecological integrity of this wetland. Therefore, landscape planning and governance are of pivotal importance for the conservation and management of wetland ecosystems in this region.

The Variability of Lake Water Chemistry in the Bory Tucholskie National Park (Northern Poland)

The paper presents the results of chemical analysis of lake waters in Bory Tucholskie National Park (BTNP). The BTNP area is unique due to its location within a single catchment and high variability in geological structure. Moreover, the lakes have different morphometric parameters, represent different hydrological types, trophic types and thermal regimes. Another unique feature is the existence of five lobelia lakes. This name comes from the Latin name of the taxon – Lobelia dortmanna L. which has been included in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants. The chemical analysis included 55 parameters, within macro elements (MEs), trace elements (TEs) and rare earth elements (REEs). Low concentrations of MEs, TEs and REEs confirm the absence of anthropogenic pressure. High variation of ME, TE and REE contents between individual lakes is due to different geological structure. The cluster analysis enabled lakes to be divided into six groups taking into account all analyzed water quality parameters. The lobelia lakes were characterized by the lowest concentrations of MEs and REEs, which mainly result from the small catchment area and their mainly endorheic character. The highest variability of MEs, TEs and REEs occurred in endorheic lakes, where the geological structure was dominant. The lowest variability of MEs, TEs and REEs occurred in the lakes connected by the Struga Siedmiu Jezior stream. The analysis of MEs, TEs and REEs in relation to the environmental factors and trophic, hydrologic and thermal typology allowed a better understanding of their spatial distribution in the BTNP lakes. The obtained results indicate that the values of the studied elements were generally close to the average values noted in surface waters according to the Geochemical Atlas of Europe.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in a Deep Lake from Sentinel-2 Data

We mapped the extent of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) of Lake Iseo (Northern Italy, over the 2015–2017 period based on satellite data (Sentinel 2 A-B) and in-situ measurements; the objective was to investigate its spatiotemporal variability. We focused on the southern sector of the lake, the location of the shallowest littorals and the most developed macrophyte communities, mainly dominated by Vallisneria spiralis and Najas marina. The method made use of both in-situ measurements and satellite data (22 Sentinel 2 A-B images) that were atmospherically corrected with 6SV code and processed with the BOMBER (Bio-Optical Model-Based tool for Estimating water quality and bottom properties from Remote sensing images). This modeling system was used to estimate the different substrate coverage (bare sediment, dense stands of macrophytes with high albedo, and sparse stand of macrophytes with low albedo). The presented results substantiate the existence of striking inter- and intra-annual variations in the spatial-cover patterns of SAV. Intense uprooting phenomena were also detected, mainly affecting V. spiralis, a species generally considered a highly plastic pioneer taxon. In this context, remote sensing emerges as a very reliable tool for mapping SAV with satisfactory accuracy by offering new perspectives for expanding our comprehension of lacustrine macrophyte dynamics and overcoming some limitations associated with traditional field surveys.
