Disentangling the Effects of Multiple Stressors on Large Rivers Using Benthic Invertebrates—A Study of Southeastern European Large Rivers with Implications for Management

Assessing the Impact of Anthropic Pressures on Aquatic Macroinvertebrates: A Functional Trait Approach in the Irtysh River Watershed

Little is known about how changes in the biodiversity and functional traits of macroinvertebrates in rivers respond to the responses of anthropic pressures and their driving factors. Macroinvertebrates were sampled at 17 sites in the Irtysh River Basin and classified macroinvertebrates into 10 traits and 38 categories between May and August 2022. Then, we performed R-mode linked to Q-mode (RLQ) analysis and calculated functional richness, evenness, divergence, and Rao's quadratic entropy (RaoQ) for each site and community-weighted means for each trait category. Our results indicated that there were pronounced alterations in species variability in the urban region. Functional divergence indicated fierce competition among species and considerable niche overlap in the urban region. Functional evenness indicated that species abundance distribution and interspecific functional distance were not uniform in the urban region. Functional richness indicated that the urban region was the strongest region in terms of niche occupation, resource utilization, and buffering capacity for environmental fluctuations. Rao's quadratic entropy showed that the trait difference of macroinvertebrates was the largest in all regions, which was caused by the gradient environmental difference. Research has revealed that urbanization significantly influences the evolutionary trajectory of macroinvertebrate fauna, culminating in an upsurge in pollution-tolerant species and a convergence of functional traits. We recommend strengthening the control of urban and industrial pollution and wise planning and management of land and water resources to mitigate the impact of anthropogenic destruction on habitat fragmentation in the Irtysh River Basin.

Physical habitat in conterminous US streams and Rivers, part 2: A quantitative assessment of habitat condition

Rigorous assessments of the ecological condition of water resources and the effect of human activities on those waters require quantitative physical, chemical, and biological data. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's river and stream surveys quantify river and stream bed particle size and stability, instream habitat complexity and cover, riparian vegetation cover and structure, and anthropogenic disturbance activities. Physical habitat is strongly controlled by natural geoclimatic factors that co-vary with human activities. We expressed the anthropogenic alteration of physical habitat as O/E ratios of observed habitat metric values divided by values expected under least-disturbed reference conditions, where site-specific expected values vary given their geoclimatic and geomorphic context. We set criteria for good, fair, and poor condition based on the distribution of O/E values in regional least-disturbed reference sites. Poor conditions existed in 22-24% of the 1.2 million km of streams and rivers in the conterminous U.S. for riparian human disturbance, streambed sediment and riparian vegetation cover, versus 14% for instream habitat complexity. Based on the same four indicators, the percentage of stream length in poor condition within 9 separate U.S. ecoregions ranged from 4% to 42%. Associations of our physical habitat indices with anthropogenic pressures demonstrate the scope of anthropogenic habitat alteration; habitat condition was negatively related to the level of anthropogenic disturbance nationally and in nearly all ecoregions. Relative risk estimates showed that streams and rivers with poor sediment, riparian cover complexity, or instream habitat cover conditions were 1.4 to 2.6 times as likely to also have fish or macroinvertebrate assemblages in poor condition. Our physical habitat condition indicators help explain deviations in biological conditions from those observed among least-disturbed sites and inform management actions for rehabilitating impaired waters and mitigating further ecological degradation.

The Impact of Hydromorphological Alterations on Mayfly Assemblages of a Mid-Sized Lowland River in South-Eastern Europe

Historically, rivers have been anthropogenically modified for different purposes worldwide (e.g., flood control, drinking water abstraction, and land drainage). Although the majority of European lowland rivers are under the impact of multiple stressors (water quality, hydromorphological alterations, land-use), the consequences of these influences on aquatic macroinvertebrates, including mayflies, have not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, with the aim of providing additional data on the response of mayflies to anthropogenic disturbances in riverine habitats, we studied mayfly assemblages and their relationship to environmental factors along a mid-sized lowland river in Croatia. No significant differences in mayfly species richness and their functional traits were observed among the three habitat groups with different levels of hydromorphological alterations (near-natural, moderately altered, and severely altered habitats). This could be related to the river’s connection to the numerous tributaries, and the variety of available microhabitats along the studied system, despite the existing hydromorphological pressures. A stronger relationship was found between mayflies and the physico-chemical water characteristics and land-use. Water temperature, water velocity, oxygen content, and nutrient (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorous) concentrations related to agricultural and urban land-use were found to be the most important factors shaping mayfly assemblages in the studied lotic lowland system. These results can contribute to the planning of management and conservation activities for lowland rivers and their biota according to the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive.

Hierarchical response of littoral macroinvertebrates to altered hydromorphology and eutrophication

The composition of littoral macroinvertebrate communities in lakes is governed by multiple natural and anthropogenic environmental influences interacting at different spatial scales. Since ecological assessment methods using littoral macroinvertebrates should respond specifically to a single stressor, knowledge on the unique effects of a given stressor is necessary. To effectively disentangle the effects of hydromorphology and trophic state requires analysing macroinvertebrate communities at lake sites with the full range of both stressors. We used a dataset of 98 lakes encompassing the entire gradient of geographical locations, lake types, hydromorphological degradation and trophic states in Central European lakes. We studied the unique and joint effects of hydromorphology and trophic state on macroinvertebrate richness, community composition and the Littoral Invertebrate Multimetric Index based on Composite Sampling (LIMCO). Variation partitioning analyses were conducted to test the importance of hydromorphology relative to trophic state across and within hydromorphological states (natural shorelines, hard and soft shore modifications) and trophic states (oligotrophic to hypertrophic states). At natural, hard and soft modification sites, hydromorphology explained 10, 16 and 19%, respectively, of the average unique variation of diversity, community composition and the LIMCO index, whereas trophic state explained on average 2, 5 and 5%, respectively. Similarly, in low, medium and high trophic state lakes, hydromorphology explained 10, 15 and 7%, respectively, of the average unique variation of diversity, community composition and the LIMCO index, whereas trophic state explained on average 0.3, 3 and 6%, respectively. Our results demonstrate that littoral hydromorphology was a more important driver of macroinvertebrate diversity, community composition and LIMCO than trophic state across hydromorphological states and trophic states. This indicates that multiple stressors in lakes act hierarchically on littoral macroinvertebrate communities and that the hydromorphological degradation of littoral zones is the primary driver for altered communities.
