Impact of Elevation-Dependent Warming on Runoff Changes in the Headwater Region of Urumqi River Basin

Warming in mountainous areas has obvious elevation dependence (warming rate increases with elevation), which deeply impacts runoff change in mountainous areas. This study analysed the influence of elevation-dependent warming on runoff in the headwater region of the Urumqi River Basin (URB) based on meteorological data, remote sensing images, and runoff data. Results indicated a significant warming rate in the URB from 1960 to 2019 (0.362 °C/decade; p < 0.01). The temperature increased with an obvious elevation-dependent warming in the URB, especially during winter. Glaciers sharply retreated in the headwater region of the URB under regional warming, and remote-based results showed that glacier areas decreased by 29.45 km2 (−57.81%) from the 1960s to 2017. The response of glacier mass balance and meltwater runoff to temperature change has a lag of 3 years in the headwater region of the URB. The elevation-dependent warming of temperature changes significantly impacted glacial meltwater runoff in the URB (R2 = 0.49). Rising temperatures altered the glacial meltwater runoff, and the maximum annual runoff of the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 meltwater runoff increased 78.6% in 1990–2017 compared to 1960–1990. During the period of 1960–1996, the total glacial meltwater runoff amounted to 26.9 × 108 m3, accounting for 33.4% of the total runoff during this period, whereas the total glacial meltwater runoff accounted for 51.1% of the total runoff in 1996–2006. Therefore, these results provide a useful reference for exploring runoff changes in mountainous watersheds in the context of elevation-dependent warming.

Retrieving and Verifying Three-Dimensional Surface Motion Displacement of Mountain Glacier from Sentinel-1 Imagery Using Optimized Method

The time series study of glacier movement is of special importance for rational management of freshwater resources, studying glacier evolution, understanding mechanism of glacier movement, and assessing disasters caused by glacier movement. In this paper, we put forward an optimization scheme for the shortcomings in the calculation method of using remote sensing to invert the three-dimensional (3D) surface motion displacement of glacier. The optimized method consists of Offset Tracking method, Optimizing the offset tracking results by means of iterative filtering, OT-SBAS technology and Conversion of 3D surface motion displacement of glacier. The Urumqi Glacier No. 1 was selected to test the optimized method. The 3D surface motion displacement of Urumqi Glacier No. 1 was retrieved by using the optimized method based on the ascending and descending Sentinel-1 datasets from 19 April to 29 August 2018. The distribution of 3D surface velocity of the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 was obtained in time series, and the accuracy of the inversion results was evaluated by using the field measurement data. The results show that the accuracies of the inverted displacements of east branch of Urumqi Glacier No. 1 (UG1E) were about 0.062, 0.063, and 0.152 m in the east, north and vertical directions, and these values for the west branch (UG1W) were 0.015, 0.020 and 0.026 m, respectively. It is indicated that using Sentinel-1 ascending and descending data and using the optimized method to retrieve the 3D surface motion displacement of glacier should satisfy the requirements of inversing the 3D surface motion displacement of high-latitude mountain glaciers in China.

Changes in Glacial Meltwater Runoff and Its Response to Climate Change in the Tianshan Region Detected Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Satellite Remote Sensing

The Tianshan Mountains, known as the “water tower” of Central Asia, are the major source of water for the most part of Xinjiang and oasis region of Central Asia. However, climate warming has amplified the discharges of glacial meltwater in the Tianshan Mountains. In this study, we calculated river discharge by integrating cross-sections mapped using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and water velocity data collected in the field. Multiple remote sensing images, such as Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, were applied to estimate the long-term discharge of 19 river sections in ungauged regions of the Tianshan Mountains. River discharge variations under climate change were also examined. Using our in-situ measured discharges as reference, the UAV derived discharge results have an NSE (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency) of 0.98, an RMSE (root mean square error) of 8.49 m3/s, and an average qualification rate of 80%. The monthly discharge of glacial meltwater-dominated river sections showed an average decrease of 2.46% during 1989–2019. The shrinking and even disappearance of mountain glaciers (approximately −4.98 km2/year) was the main reasons for the decrease trend. However, the precipitation-dominated river sections showed an average increase of 2.27% for the same period. The increase in precipitation (approximately 1.93 mm/year) was the key cause for the increase tendency. This study highlights remote sensing hydrological station technology and its application in the long-term prediction of river discharge, which is critical for decision-making regarding integrated water resource management in alpine regions.

Spatial analysis of supraglacial debris cover in Svalbard, Arctic Region-a decadal study

Continental glacier melts directly influence the environment, resulting in sea-level rise affecting the settlements along the coast. The increase in global warming and constant change in the glacier mass grabbed the attention of researchers in understanding the evolution and distribution of glaciers. Despite the increase in the number of glacier studies, the difficulty is experienced by the researchers in understanding the supra-glacial debris cover and its characteristics. Supraglacial debris cover affects surface melt by increasing and decreasing ablation under thin and thick debris cover. In the present study, estimation of supraglacial debris cover (SDC) over Austre Brøggerbreen and Vestre Brøggerbreen glaciers of Ny-Ålesund is carried out with the aid of Landsat 5/7/8 datasets between 2000 and 2020. Supraglacial debris-cover is mapped using NDSI and band ratio techniques based on thresholding and it is estimated that Austre Brøggerbreen and Vestre Brøggerbreen glaciers are covered by 7.29% and 15.19% of SDC respectively. Results obtained are validated by a field visit to Arctic glacier, which is the first of its kind enhancing India's scientific credentials in Polar research.

Modeling of Mass Balance Variability and Its Impact on Water Discharge from the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 Catchment, Tian Shan, China

Originating in the Tian Shan mountains, Urumqi River plays a key role in terms of water supply to downstream areas. In its headwaters, Urumqi Glacier No. 1 (UG1) is the largest glacier contributing to water discharge. Assessing its response to the changing climatic conditions in the area is of major importance to quantify future water availability. We here apply COSIPY, a COupled Snowpack and Ice surface energy and mass balance model in PYthon, to UG1, implementing a new albedo parameterization which integrates site-specific bare-ice albedo values on a pixel-by-pixel basis observed by remote sensing. We assess model performance threefold: quantitatively based on long-term measurement data of (1) surface mass balance (SMB) and (2) water discharge as well as qualitatively (3) comparing simulated snow line altitudes to such imated on the basis of time-lapse photography. Comparison of the modeled SMB with annually-averaged data from ablation stakes reveals that COSIPY including the new albedo parameterization accounts for 57.6% of the variance observed in the measurements. The original albedo parameterization performs only slightly inferior (57.1%). Glacier-wide comparison between modeled and glaciological SMB shows high agreement. In terms of discharge prediction, COSIPY reproduces onset and duration of the discharge season well. Estimated discharge from the whole catchment shows shortcomings in exactly matching the measured times series, but interannual variability is captured.
