Planktonic Invertebrates in the Assessment of Long-Term Change in Water Quality of the Sorbulak Wastewater Disposal System (Kazakhstan)

Biodiversity of zooplankton (Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda) in the tributaries of Cheboksary Reservoir (Middle Volga, Russia)

Background

Freshwater zooplankton is an important component of the ecological communities of inland water bodies. It acts as an important part of the food web and participates in the self-purification processes of aquatic ecosystems. To study the abundance and distribution of species, a sampling event dataset was compiled and then published through GBIF. The aim of the work was to describe the current zooplankton fauna (Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda) and its abundance, based on a recently published dataset. The research was conducted from 2015 to 2022. Zooplankton samples were collected by vertical towing a plankton net (70 μm mesh) from the bottom to the water surface or by filtering through a net, the water being collected with a measuring bucket. The samples were concentrated to 100 ml and fixed with a final concentration of 4% formalin solution. For each sampling event, the coordinates of the location, number of individuals and date were recorded.

New information

The dataset contains information on 259 taxа, including 257 species and subspecies of zooplankton from 36 families found in the tributaries of the Cheboksary Reservoir. The families Chydoridae (35 species), Brachionidae (31) and Cyclopidae (27) were the most species-rich. Four invasive species were found: Kellicottiabostoniensis (Rousselet, 1908), Acanthocyclopsamericanus (Marsh, 1893), Ilyocryptusspinifer Herrick, 1882 and Thermocyclopstaihokuensis Harada, 1931.

Evaluation of arsenic effects on Paracyclops novenarius Reid, 1987: a cyclopoid copepod in central-north of Mexico

Description and morphological analysis of copepods inhabiting a water body with high arsenic concentrations (32.79 to 62.29 mg L^-1) were performed to identify some effect on the development of individuals due to the arsenic concentrations. Detailed morphology of prosomal and urosomal appendages along the development of the specimens was considered. The results showed that the freshwater copepod Paracyclops novenarius Reid, 1987 inhabits this water body, and previously, it was recorded as Paracyclops chiltoni (Thomson GM, 1882) on this site. Moreover, this becomes the first record of P. novenarius in Mexico. Morphological analysis showed a normal and stable development along the different instars, different arsenic concentrations in the media, and different sampled dates between the analyzed specimens, suggesting that the high arsenic concentrations do not affect the morphology of P. novenarius, including all its development and adult instars, which differs from other copepods and other groups such as Cladocera and Rotifera, where morphological changes due to metals and metalloids have been observed but in low concentrations of these elements. The results of this study contribute to the existing reports of the genus Paracyclops (Claus 1893) in Mexico and could provide information for environmental impact assessments on aquatic systems.

Influence of Selected Environmental Factors on Diatom β Diversity (Bacillariophyta) and the Value of Diatom Indices and Sampling Issues

Human impacts and environmental climate changes have led to a progressive decline in the diversity of diatoms in lakes in the recent past. The components of β diversity (e.g., species turnover and nestedness) and underlying factors are still poorly understood. Here, we report an investigation of two alternative approaches—beta diversity (β diversity) partitioning and local contribution to β diversity (LCBD)—including their responses to selected environmental factors and representativeness of samples in estimating the ecological fitness of a lake. The β diversity of diatoms and their local contributions could be explained by the effects of environmental variables (p < 0.01). The random forest method showed the most contribution to the variance for NO3−, Cl−, and SO42−. PERMANOVA as well as a network analysis in JASP (Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program) showed significant differences between the seasons in diatom assemblages and in the diatom index for Polish lakes (IOJ). Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms responsible for community organizations along environmental gradients from the perspective of β diversity components, and mechanisms of the indication value of diatoms for lakes; the results could be used especially by countries implementing ecological assessments.

Factors Affecting Water Quality and the Structure of Zooplankton Communities in Wastewater Reservoirs of the Right-Bank Sorbulak Canal System (South-Eastern Kazakhstan)

This work aims to assess the main factors that determined the variability of environmental and biological variables in wastewater reservoirs of the Right-Bank Sorbulak Canal system (South-Eastern Kazakhstan). We used standard methods for the collection and analysis of data, as well as the principal components analysis (PCA) to assess the relationship between environmental and biological indicators. The average depth of the surveyed reservoirs was 4.1–10.0 m, temperature—21.7–25.7 °C, pH—9.41–10.00, permanganate index—16.22–19.07 mgO/dm3, N-NO2—0.03–0.13, N-NO3—1.28–3.00, N-NH4—0.30–0.53, PO4—0.14–0.39, Si—3.69–8.26, Mn—0.03–0.07, Fe—0.34–0.38 mg/dm3. The content of Cd, Co, Pb, Zn, and Cr was low, Cu—0.012–0.036 mg/dm3. The water quality is influenced by the wastewater composition, chemical interactions, morphometric and physical-chemical conditions of the reservoir, pollution of the coastal area, and secondary water pollution. Changes in the species composition and zooplankton abundance reflected the instability of external conditions. PCA showed the priority influence of carbonates, bicarbonates, magnesium, temperature, nutrients, and heavy metals on zooplankton structure. The results obtained demonstrate the indicator significance of zooplankton, and the methodological approaches can be used to assess water bodies with the complex pollution located in other regions.
