The Effect of Soil Conservation Measures on Runoff, Soil Erosion, TN, and TP Losses Based on Experimental Runoff Plots in Northern China

Study on characteristics of soil and nutrient losses in Sunjiagou small watershed in cold black soil area

Investigating the impact of different factors on soil and nutrient loss and suggesting viable control measures is currently a significant concern. This study aims to examine the variations in soil erosion, as well as nitrogen and phosphorus loss, in the core area of the typical hilly diffuse Blackland erosion control. To achieve this, runoff plots with slopes of 3° and 5° were set up in the Sunjiagou sub-basin, located in the upper reaches of the Feiketu River. These plots were subjected to various soil and water conservation measures, along with different levels of vegetation cover. This study aims to analyze the soil and nutrient loss patterns and characteristics in each runoff plot during the natural rainfall events occurring between 2020 and 2022. The results show that soil and nutrient losses are highly significantly and positively correlated with rainfall intensity. The RUSLE model demonstrates a better fit for both cross ridge tillage and bare ground. The loss of nitrogen was much more significant than that of phosphorus, and nitrate nitrogen is the main form of nitrogen loss. Nitrogen loss is mainly dominated by nitrate nitrogen (NN), which is easily soluble in water and constantly migrates with runoff due to the negatively charged NN (NN accounted for 45.2% ~ 81.8% of total nitrogen (TN)). In contrast, the positively charged ammonia nitrogen (AN) is more stable in combination with the soil; large losses only occur under severe sediment erosion. Phosphorus is easily attached to sediment, and the high sediment production leads to a more serious loss of total phosphorus (PP) in the particulate state (PP accounts for 72.7% ~ 96.2% of total phosphorus (TP)). Changing longitudinal ridge tillage to cross ridge tillage and planting vegetation with better water retention and sediment fixation as plant hedges can effectively prevent the loss of soil, runoff, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

A Field Study for the Effects of Grass Cover, Rainfall Intensity and Slope Length on Soil Erosion in the Loess Plateau, China

Slope length is an important topographic factor for controlling soil erosion. There exists limited knowledge of the interactions of slope length, vegetation restoration, and rainfall intensity on soil erosion. This study investigated the impact of the slope length on soil erosion for different grass coverages and different rainfall intensities via simulated rainfall experiments. The experiments included five rainfall intensity treatments (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 mm min−1), four grass cover treatments (0%, 30%, 60%, and 90%), and five slope length treatments (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 m). The change process of soil loss was significantly different (p < 0.05) for different slope lengths. The trend of soil loss changing with slope length is: under a grass cover of 0 or 30%, the soil erosion increased exponentially with increasing slope length. However, under a grass cover of 60%, the soil erosion rate peaked at a slope length of 8 m, and under a grass cover of 90%, the soil erosion rate peaked at a slope length of 6 m. At rainfall intensities of 1.5–2 mm min−1, the overall soil erosion amount was small. The soil loss increased drastically with slope length when the rainfall intensity exceeded 2 mm min−1. Compared with a slope length of 2 m, longer slope lengths increased the erosion rate by 225–930% under different grass coverages treatments. Regression analysis showed that grass cover and rainfall intensity change the trend of erosion with slope length, and the negative effect of slope length on erosion is strengthened with the increase of grass cover, while this negative effect gradually weakens with the increase of rainfall intensity.

Responses of Runoff and Soil Loss on Slopes to Land Use Management and Rainfall Characteristics in Northern China

Soil conservation measures are widely used to control soil erosion and sediment loss; however, their proper usage relies on a deep understanding of the responses of runoff and sediment loss to land management and rainfall characteristics. In the present study, a long-term (2014–2020) monitored dataset derived from ten runoff plots in the upstream catchment of the Miyun Reservoir in Beijing, China, was used to study runoff and sediment loss responses to land use management and rainfall characteristics. The study results show that plots with no soil conservation measures had the highest runoff depth of 75 mm and suffered the highest sediment loss, at a rate of 3200 t km⁻² yr⁻¹. The terraced and vegetated plots generated lower runoff depths, with soil loss rates less than 213.0 t km⁻² yr⁻¹. With the exception of the contour tillage plots on steep slopes, the vegetation and engineering measures can efficiently reduce runoff and sediment loss, with both runoff and sediment reduction efficiencies higher than 76%. Statistical analyses indicate that, on the plots of bare soil and cultivation without soil conservation measures, runoff and sediment loss were mainly affected by the maximum 30 min rainfall intensity. However, on the plots with soil conservation measures, they were mainly determined by rainfall amount and duration. The sediment loss rate can be well fitted with the runoff depth using a power function. Based on the analyses, water-saving soil conservation measures are recommended for the study area. In addition, the size of terraces should be reconsidered on gentle slopes, and the coverage of forest, shrubs, and grass on slopes should be reduced, thus allowing for more surface runoff generation to ensure drinking water safety. In general, for the study area, soil conservation measures are required on the bare soil and cultivated slopes.
