Translocation of Soil Arsenic towards Accumulation in Rice: Magnitude of Water Management to Minimize Health Risk

Identification of key factors and mechanism determining arsenic mobilization in paddy soil-porewater-rice system

Arsenic (As) mobilization in paddy fields poses significant health risks, necessitating a thorough understanding of the controlling factors and mechanisms to safeguard human health. We conducted a comprehensive investigation of the soil-porewater-rice system throughout the rice life cycle, focusing on monitoring arsenic distribution and porewater characteristics in typical paddy field plots. Soil pH ranged from 4.79 to 7.98, while porewater pH was weakly alkaline, varying from 7.2 to 7.47. Total arsenic content in paddy soils ranged from 6.8 to 17.2 mg/kg, with arsenic concentrations in porewater during rice growth ranging from 2.97 to 14.85 μg/L. Specifically, arsenite concentrations in porewater ranged from 0.48 to 7.91 μg/L, and arsenate concentrations ranged from 0.73 to 5.83 μg/L. Through principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of redox factors, we identified that arsenic concentration in porewater is predominantly influenced by the interplay of reduction and desorption processes, contributing 43.5 % collectively. Specifically, the reductive dissolution of iron oxides associated with organic carbon accounted for 23.3 % of arsenic concentration dynamics in porewater. Additionally, arsenic release from the soil followed a sequence starting with nitrate reduction, followed by ferric ion reduction, and subsequently sulfate reduction. Our findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms governing arsenic mobilization within the paddy soil-porewater-rice system. These insights could inform strategies for irrigation management aimed at mitigating arsenic toxicity and associated health risks.

Removal of Toxic and Essential Nutrient Elements from Commercial Rice Brands Using Different Washing and Cooking Practices: Human Health Risk Assessment

This study determined the influence of different cooking procedures on the removal of toxic elements (TEs) including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) along with other nutrient elements from different commercially available rice brands sold in Bangladeshi markets. We observed 33%, 35%, and 27% average removal of As, Cd, and Pb accordingly from rice when cooked with a rice to water ratio of 1:6 after washing 5 times. We also found a significant reduction in essential elements: Zn (17%), Cu (10%), Mn (22%), Se (49%), and Mo (22%), when rice cooking was performed as in traditional practice. Daily dietary intakes were found to be between 0.36 and 1.67 µg/kgbw for As, 0.06 and 1.15 µg/kgbw for Cd, and 0.04 and 0.17 µg/kgbw for Pb when rice was cooked by the rice cooker method (rice:water 1:2), while in the traditional method (rice:water 1:6) daily intake rates ranged from 0.23 to 1.3 µg/kgbw for As, 0.04 to 0.88 µg/kgbw for Cd, and 0.03 to 0.15 µg/kgbw for Pb for adults. The HQ and ILCR for As, Cd, and Pb revealed that there is a possibility of noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for As but no appreciable risk for Cd and Pb from consumption of rice.

Potential Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Cultivated Land Based on Soil Geochemical Zoning: Yishui County, North China Case Study

Various human production activities have caused tremendous damage to the soil ecological environment of cultivated land. Regional ecological risk assessments and the safe use of cultivated land have received widespread attention. The ecological risk assessment of heavy metals based on soil geochemical zoning has not been reported in the past. Using 14,389 topsoil samples, considering comprehensive geological background information, Yishui County in northern China was divided into three soil geochemical areas and 14 soil geochemical sub-regions by means of principal component factor superposition. The results of environmental quality and risk assessments of eight heavy metals based on soil geochemical zoning show that the single pollution index was greater than 1.0 and the Nemerow pollution index was greater than 0.7 for Ni in a sub-region, indicating that Ni pollution had reached the early warning limit, which demonstrates that Ni has a certain enrichment trend. Meanwhile, the geoaccumulation index of Ni and Cr was greater than zero in some sub-regions, indicating a slight pollution level. In addition, the potential ecological risk factor of the measured heavy metals was greater than 40 in 9 sub-regions, indicating a moderate ecological hazard, and the risk index was greater than 150 in a sub-region, revealing moderate ecological intensity, in which Hg and Cd were leading contributors to potential ecological hazards with a contribution rate between 58% and 76%. This method is suitable for the evaluation of soil environmental quality and safety for medium and large scales, and can provide a scientific basis for further zoning and grading prevention and control of soil pollution in cultivated land.
