Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Isotherms of Methylene Blue Adsorption Study onto Cassava Stem Activated Carbon

Adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from Aqueous Solutions Using Synthesized Alkali-Activated Foamed Zeolite Adsorbent: Isotherm, Kinetic, and Regeneration Study

Water pollution, particularly from heavy metals, poses a significant threat to global health, necessitating efficient and environmentally friendly removal methods. This study introduces novel zeolite-based adsorbents, specifically alkali-activated foamed zeolite (AAFZ), for the effective adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents' capabilities were comprehensively characterized through kinetic and isotherm analyses. Alkaline activation induced changes in chemical composition and crystalline structure, as observed via XRF and XRD analyses. AAFZ exhibited a significantly larger pore volume (1.29 times), higher Si/Al ratio (1.15 times), and lower crystallinity compared to ZZ50, thus demonstrating substantially higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Ni(II) compared to ZZ50. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of ZZ50 and AAFZ for Cu(II) were determined to be 69.28 mg/g and 99.54 mg/g, respectively. In the case of Ni(II), the maximum monolayer adsorption capacities for ZZ50 and AAFZ were observed at 48.53 mg/g and 88.99 mg/g, respectively. For both adsorbents, the optimum pH for adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) was found to be 5 and 6, respectively. Equilibrium was reached around 120 min, and the pseudo-second-order kinetics accurately depicted the chemisorption process. The Langmuir isotherm model effectively described monolayer adsorption for both adsorbents. Furthermore, the regeneration experiment demonstrated that AAFZ could be regenerated for a minimum of two cycles using hydrochloric acid (HCl). These findings highlight the potential of the developed adsorbents as promising tools for effective and practical adsorption applications.

Prediction and optimizing of methylene blue sequestration to activated charcoal/magnetic nanocomposites using artificial neutral network and response surface methodology

Green synthesized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) linked with activated charcoal (AC) (AC/Fe3O4 NCs) were exploited for methylene blue (MB) confiscation in this study. The AC/Fe3O4 NCs produced were characterized using TEM, FTIR, UV/Vis and XRD spectrometry. The Response-Surface-Methodology (RSM) was utilized to improve the experimental data for the MB sorption to AC/Fe3O4 NCs, with 20 experimental runs implemented through a central composite design (CCD) to assess the effect of sorption factors-initial MB concentration, pH and sorbent dosage effects on the response (removal-effectiveness). The quadratic model was discovered to ideally describe the sorption process, with an R2 value of 0.9857. The theoretical prediction of the experimental data using the Artificial-Neural-Network (ANN) model showed that the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) had a better performance criterion. Comparison between the modelled experimental and predicted data showed also that the LM algorithm had a high R2 of 0.9922, which showed NN model applicability for defining the sorption of MB to AC/Fe3O4 NCs with practical precision. The results of the non-linear fitting (NLF) of both isotherm and kinetic models, showed that the sorption of MB to AC/Fe3O4 NCs was perfectly described using the pseudo-second-order (PSOM) and Freundlich (FRHM) models. The estimated optimum sorption capacity was 455 mg g-1. Thermodynamically, the sorption of MB to AC/Fe3O4 NCs was shown to be non-spontaneous and endothermic.

A Magnetic Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application for High-Efficiency Detoxification of Aflatoxin B1

(1) Background: Safety problems associated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination have always been a major threat to human health. Removing AFB1 through adsorption is considered an attractive remediation technique. (2) Methods: To produce an adsorbent with a high AFB1 adsorption efficiency, a magnetic reduced graphene oxide composite (Fe3O4@rGO) was synthesized using one-step hydrothermal fabrication. Then, the adsorbent was characterized using a series of techniques, such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. Finally, the effects of this nanocomposite on the nutritional components of treated foods, such as vegetable oil and peanut milk, were also examined. (3) Results: The optimal synthesis conditions for Fe3O4@rGO were determined to be 200 °C for 6 h. The synthesis temperature significantly affected the adsorption properties of the prepared material due to its effect on the layered structure of graphene and the loading of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The results of various characterizations illustrated that the surface of Fe3O4@rGO had a two-dimensional layered nanostructure with many folds and that Fe3O4 nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the composite material. Moreover, the results of isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption of AFB1 by Fe3O4@rGO conformed to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 82.64 mg·g-1; the rapid and efficient adsorption of AFB1 occurred mainly through chemical adsorption via a spontaneous endothermic process. When applied to treat vegetable oil and peanut milk, the prepared material minimized the loss of nutrients and thus preserved food quality. (4) Conclusions: The above findings reveal a promising adsorbent, Fe3O4@rGO, with favorable properties for AFB1 adsorption and potential for food safety applications.

Efficient removal of dyes from aqueous solutions using short-length bimodal mesoporous carbon adsorbents

Ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with controlled mesopore lengths and volumes were synthesized and investigated to remove the model dye methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The pore size, specific surface area, pore volume, and pore length of OMCs (CMK-3, sCMK-3, and sCMK-5) were analyzed and benchmarked against commercial activated carbon (AC). CMK-3 and sCMK-3 had narrow pore size distributions (PSDs) centered at ∼4.4 nm, whereas the PSD of sCMK-5 was bimodal, derived from the same pores as CMK-3 (∼4.4 nm) and the inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes (∼5.8 nm). The pore length decreased from 743 nm for CMK-3 to 173 nm for sCMK-3 and 169 nm for sCMK-5, facilitating the MB accessibility and efficient utilization of internal mesopores. The MB adsorption on the prepared adsorbents was well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² > 0.999), and the initial adsorption rate (h) on sCMK-5 was 34.07-fold faster than that on commercial AC. The Langmuir model adequately explained the equilibrium adsorption data, and the increase in the Langmuir maximal adsorption capacity (q_m) of the OMCs was proportional to the specific surface area. The MB adsorption on sCMK-5 was endothermic and spontaneous, and proceeded primarily through physical adsorption as well as chemisorption reacting with oxygen atoms in hydroxyl groups. The prepared adsorbents were also suitable for polishing textile wastewater containing color-causing substances along with the background organic matter. These OMCs are promising for treating wastewater as efficient adsorbents for large molecular pollutants such as dyes.

Characterization and Ofloxacin Adsorption Studies of Chemically Modified Activated Carbon from Cassava Stem

Cassava is a type of crop popular in Asian countries. It can be easily cultivated and grows to a mature plant in 9 months. Considering its availability, this work studied activated carbon based on cassava stem. Ofloxacin was chosen as the adsorbate, simulating the wastewater from the pharmaceutical industry. Cassava stem was ground into particles and heated to the activated state, 787 °C. The cassava-stem-activated carbon was further treated with the surface modifier, namely sodium hydroxide and zinc chloride, to study the improvement in ofloxacin adsorption. Prepared adsorbents were characterised using the SEM, FT-IR, XRD, DSC and TGA methods before being evaluated through batch adsorption, thermodynamic, and kinetic studies. The surface area analysis indicates that treatment of the activated carbon with NaOH and ZnCl₂ increases the surface area due to the removal of organic content by the chemicals. Better ofloxacin adsorption of all activated carbon samples can be obtained with solutions at pH 8. An endothermic reaction was predicted, shown by higher ofloxacin adsorption at a higher temperature, supported by a positive value of ΔH° in the thermodynamic studies. The negative values of ΔG° revealed that adsorptions were spontaneous. The higher R² values indicate that the adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order equation of kinetic study. The maximum adsorption capacities are 42.37, 62.11, 62.89 and 58.82 mg/g for raw cassava stem (RC), cassava-stem-activated carbon (AC), NaOH-modified cassava-stem-activated carbon (NAC), and ZnCl₂ modified cassava-stem-activated carbon (ZAC). The adsorption capacity is good compared to previous works by other researchers, making it a possible alternative material for the pharmaceutical industry’s wastewater treatment.

Effective mitigation of single-component and mixed textile dyes from aqueous media using recyclable graphene-based nanocomposite

The present study reported the synthesis and utilization of a graphene-based hybrid nanocomposite (MnFe₂O₄/G) to mitigate several synthetic dyes, including methylene blue, malachite green, crystal violet, and Rhodamine B. This adsorbent was structurally analyzed by several physicochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement, point of zero charge, and Boehm titrations. BET surface area of MnFe₂O₄/G was measured at 382.98 m²/g, which was substantially higher than that of MnFe₂O₄. MnFe₂O₄/G possessed diverse surface chemistry properties with the presence of many functional groups such as carboxylic acid, phenolic, lactone, and basic groups. MnFe₂O₄/G was used to remove synthetic dyes in the aqueous media. The effect of many factors, e.g., concentration (5-50 mg/L), pH (4-10), dose (5-20 mg), and temperature (25-45 °C) on adsorption performance of MnFe₂O₄/G was conducted. Kinetic, isotherm, intraparticle, and thermodynamic models were adopted for investigating adsorption phenomenon of dyes on MnFe₂O₄/G. The maximum adsorption capacity of dyes over MnFe₂O₄/G was found as Rhodamine B (67.8 mg/g) < crystal violet (81.3 mg/g) < methylene blue (137.7 mg/g) < malachite green (394.5 mg/g). Some tests were performed to remove mixed dyes, and mixed dyes in the presence of antibiotics with total efficiencies of 65.8-87.9% after 120 min. Moreover, the major role of π-π stacking interaction was clarified to gain insight into the adsorption mechanism. MnFe₂O₄/G could recycle up to 4 cycles, which may be beneficial for further practical water treatment.

Recent Developments in the Application of Bio-Waste-Derived Adsorbents for the Removal of Methylene Blue from Wastewater: A Review

Over the last few years, various industries have released wastewater containing high concentrations of dyes straight into the ecological system, which has become a major environmental problem (i.e., soil, groundwater, surface water pollution, etc.). The rapid growth of textile industries has created an alarming situation in which further deterioration to the environment has been caused due to substances being left in treated wastewater, including dyes. The application of activated carbon has recently been demonstrated to be a highly efficient technology in terms of removing methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. Agricultural waste, as well as animal-based and wood products, are excellent sources of bio-waste for MB remediation since they are extremely efficient, have high sorption capacities, and are renewable sources. Despite the fact that commercial activated carbon is a favored adsorbent for dye elimination, its extensive application is restricted because of its comparatively high cost, which has prompted researchers to investigate alternative sources of adsorbents that are non-conventional and more economical. The goal of this review article was to critically evaluate the accessible information on the characteristics of bio-waste-derived adsorbents for MB’s removal, as well as related parameters influencing the performance of this process. The review also highlighted the processing methods developed in previous studies. Regeneration processes, economic challenges, and the valorization of post-sorption materials were also discussed. This review is beneficial in terms of understanding recent advances in the status of biowaste-derived adsorbents, highlighting the accelerating need for the development of low-cost adsorbents and functioning as a precursor for large-scale system optimization.
