Lake Evaporation in a Hyper-Arid Environment, Northwest of China—Measurement and Estimation

Lake evaporation in arid zones: Leveraging Landsat 8's water temperature retrieval and key meteorological drivers

This study assessed the accuracy of various methods for estimating lake evaporation in arid, high-wind environments, leveraging water temperature data from Landsat 8. The evaluation involved four estimation techniques: the FAO 56 radiation-based equation, the Schendel temperature-based equation, the Brockamp & Wenner mass transfer-based equation, and the VUV regression-based equation. The study focused on the Chah Nimeh Reservoirs (CNRs) in the arid region of Iran due to its distinctive wind patterns and dry climate. Our analysis revealed that the Split-window algorithm was the most precise for satellite-based water surface temperature measurement, with an R2 value of 0.86 and an RMSE of 1.61 °C. Among evaporation estimation methods, the FAO 56 stood out, demonstrating an R2 value of 0.76 and an RMSE of 4.36 mm/day in comparison to pan evaporation measurements. A subsequent sensitivity analysis using an artificial neural network (ANN) identified net radiation as the predominant factor influencing lake evaporation, especially during both wind and no-wind conditions. This research underscores the importance of incorporating net radiation, water surface temperature, and wind speed parameters in evaporation evaluations, providing pivotal insights for effective water management in arid, windy regions.

Simulating River/Lake–Groundwater Exchanges in Arid River Basins: An Improvement Constrained by Lake Surface Area Dynamics and Evapotranspiration

Surface water–groundwater interactions in arid zones are characterized by water exchange processes in a complex system comprising intermittent streams/terminal lakes, shallow aquifers, riparian zone evapotranspiration, and groundwater withdrawal. Notable challenges arise when simulating such hydrological systems; for example, field observations are scarce, and hydrogeological parameters exhibit considerable spatial heterogeneity. To reduce the simulation uncertainties, in addition to groundwater head and river discharge measurements, we adopted remote sensing-based evapotranspiration data and lake area dynamics as known conditions to calibrate the model. We chose the Ejina Basin, located in the lower reaches of the Heihe River Basin in arid northwest China, as the study area to validate our modelling approach. The hydrological system of this basin is characterized by intensive, spatiotemporally variable surface water–groundwater interactions. The areas of the terminal lakes into which all river runoff flows vary significantly depending on the ratio between river runoff and lake evaporation. Simulation results with a monthly time step from 2000 to 2017 indicate that river leakage accounted for approximately 61% of the total river runoff. Our study shows that for areas where surface water and groundwater observations are sparse, combining remote sensing product data of surface water areas and evapotranspiration can effectively reduce the uncertainty in coupled surface water and groundwater simulations.

Spatiotemporal distributions of pan evaporation and the influencing factors in China from 1961 to 2017

Pan evaporation (EVP) is an important element of the hydrological cycle and exhibits a close relationship with climate change. In this study, the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) model and extreme gradient boosting (Xgboost) model were applied to estimate the monthly EVP. The spatiotemporal distributions of EVP and influencing factors in China and eight subregions from 1961 to 2017 were analyzed. The root mean square error (RMSE) of all GRNN models was approximately 10%, and the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) coefficient was larger than 0.94 in different subregions. The annual mean EVP in all subregions and throughout China showed decreasing trends before 1993, while EVP increasing trends occurred in East China (EC), South China (SC), Southwest China (SWC), west of Northwest China (WNC), and throughout China after 1994. Subsequently, the variable importance in projection (VIP) between EVP and climatic factors obtained by partial least squares (PLS) regression and the relative contribution calculated by Xgboost stepwise regression analysis (SRA) were used to investigate the climatic parameter sensitivity to EVP. The results indicated that the combined effects of the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), sunshine duration (SSD), and wind speed (WIN) were the main reasons for the variations in EVP across China. At the seasonal scale, SSD, WIN, relative humidity (RHU), and VPD were the most sensitive climatic factors to EVP in different seasons. In addition, the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) index showed a significant negative correlation with EVP, and the El Niño 3.4 (N3.4) and East Atlantic/Western Russia (EA/WR) indices revealed positive correlations in most regions from 1961 to 1993, while the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) was negatively correlated with EVP. Moreover, N3.4 and Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) were positively correlated with EVP from 1994 to 2017. Finally, the yearly number of heatwave events (HWN) was highly correlated with EVP because of the high VPD and SSD levels during the heatwave event periods.

Numerical Approaches for Estimating Daily River Leakage from Arid Ephemeral Streams

Despite the significance of river leakage to riparian ecosystems in arid/semi-arid regions, a true understanding and the accurate quantification of the leakage processes of ephemeral rivers in these regions remain elusive. In this study, the patterns of river infiltration and the associated controlling factors in an approximately 150-km section of the Donghe River (lower Heihe River, China) were revealed using a combination of field investigations and modelling techniques. The results showed that from 21 April 2010 to 7 September 2012, river water leakage accounted for 33% of the total river runoff in the simulated segments. A sensitivity analysis showed that the simulated infiltration rates were most sensitive to the aquifer hydraulic conductivity and the maximum evapotranspiration (ET) rate. However, the river leakage rate, i.e., the ratio of the leakage volume to the total runoff volume, of a single runoff event relies heavily on the total runoff volume and river flow rate. In addition to the hydraulic parameters of riverbeds, the characteristics of ET parameters are equally important for quantifying the flux exchange between arid ephemeral streams and underlying aquifers. Coupled surface/groundwater models, which aim to estimate river leakage, should consider riparian zones because these areas play a dominant role in the formation of leakage from the river for recharging via ET. The results of this paper can be used as a reference for water resource planning and management in regulated river basins to help maintain riparian ecosystems in arid regions.

Estimating Dynamics of Terminal Lakes in the Second Largest Endorheic River Basin of Northwestern China from 2000 to 2017 with Landsat Imagery

Quantifying terminal-lake dynamics is crucial for understanding water-ecosystem-economy relationship across endorheic river basins in arid environments. In this study, the spatio-temporal variations in terminal lakes of the lower Heihe River Basin were investigated for the first time since the Ecological Water Diversion Project commenced in 2000. The lake area and corresponding water consumption were determined with 248 Landsat images. Vital recovery of lakes occurred two years after the implementation of the project, and the total lake area increased by 382.6%, from 30.7 to 148.2 km2, during 2002–2017. East Juyan Lake (EJL) was first restored as a project target and subsequently reached a maximum area of 70.1 km2. Water dispersion was initiated in 2003, with the East river prioritized for restoration. Swan Lake in the East river enlarged to 67.7 km2 by 2017, while the other four lakes temporarily existed or maintained an area < 7 km2, such as West Juyan Lake. Water consumed by lakes increased synchronously with lake area. The average water consumption of the six lakes was 1.03 × 108 m3/year, with 63% from EJL. The increasing terminal lakes; however, highlight the seasonal competition for water use between riparian vegetation and lake ecosystems in water-limited areas.

A Global Assessment of Terrestrial Evapotranspiration Increase Due to Surface Water Area Change

Surface water, which is changing constantly, is a crucial component in the global water cycle, as it greatly affects the water flux between the land and the atmosphere through evaporation. However, the influences of changing surface water area on the global water budget have largely been neglected. Here we estimate an extra water flux of 30.38 ± 15.51 km3/year omitted in global evaporation calculation caused by a net increase of global surface water area between periods 1984-1999 and 2000-2015. Our estimate is at a similar magnitude to the recent average annual change in global evapotranspiration assuming a stationary surface water area. It is also comparable to the estimated trends in various components of the hydrological cycle such as precipitation, discharge, groundwater depletion, and glacier melting. Our findings suggest that the omission of surface water area changes may cause considerable biases in global evaporation estimation, so an improved understanding of water area dynamics and its atmospheric coupling is crucial to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of future global water budgets.
