Effects of Exposed Artificial Substrate on the Competition between Phytoplankton and Benthic Algae: Implications for Shallow Lake Restoration

First Record of Microplastic Contamination in the Non-Native Dark False Mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata (Bivalvia: Dreissenidae) in a Coastal Urban Lagoon

Microplastic contamination is a global concern due to its conspicuous presence in aquatic ecosystems and its toxic nature to environmental and human health. False mussels are among the most notable fresh- and brackish water invaders. The invasive Mytilopsis leucophaeata in Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon-RFL (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is the most abundant macrofaunal invertebrate, widely established and distributed throughout the lagoon. This study aimed to assess microplastic contamination in this invasive filter feeder and evaluate its potential use as a bioindicator. Agglomerates (~100 mussels) were manually collected using a stainless-steel spatula in ten sampling areas distributed throughout the whole lagoon and kept frozen. In the laboratory, 60 individuals were sorted by area for soft-tissue digestion. Each pool of 10 soft-tissue mussels (n = 6 by area) was wet-weighted and then placed in a 150-mL decontaminated glass beaker with 50 mL of 10% KOH. Samples were heated (40 °C) for 48 h, and digested samples were filtered in glass-fiber membranes. Microplastics were found in all samples of mussels (n = 60) from RFL; the particles were mostly lower than 100 µm with a mean concentration (±SD) of 35.96 ± 47.64 MPs g wet-weight-1. Microplastics were distinguished in seven shapes with different occurrences in samples (%): fiber (43.3%); fragment (34.3%); film (16.3%); sponge/foam (4.9%); pellet (0.57%), rope/filaments (0.17%); and undefined (0.4%). Thirteen colors of microplastics were found, but transparent (54.94%), black (10.77%), and white (9.36%) were the most common. Mytilopsis leucophaeata were useful to assess microplastic contamination in RFL and might be preferentially used in other invaded brackish systems instead of native and often threatened bivalves. Our results confirm the effective application of bivalves as an indicator of coastal microplastic pollution.

Effects of sediment dredging on freshwater system: a comprehensive review

As a common geo-engineering method to control internal load of nutrients and pollutants, sediment dredging has been used in many freshwater basins and has achieved certain effects. However, dredging can disturb water bodies and substrates and cause secondary pollution. It negatively affects the water environment system mainly from the following aspects. Dredging suddenly changes the hydrological conditions and many physical indicators of the water body, which will cause variations in water physicochemical properties. For example, changes in pH, dissolved oxygen, redox potential, transparency, and temperature can lead to a series of aquatic biological responses. On the other hand, sediment resuspension and deep-layer sediment exposure can affect the cycling of nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus), the release and valence conversion of heavy metals, and the desorption and degradation of organic pollutants in the overlying water. This can further affect the community structure of aquatic organisms. The aim of this paper is to analyze the relevant literature on freshwater sediment dredging, and to summarize the current knowledge of the potential environmental risks caused by the dredging and utilization of freshwater sediments. Based on this, the paper attempts to propose suggestions to mitigate these adverse environmental impacts. These are significant contributions to the development of environmentally friendly freshwater sediment dredging technologies.

Epipelon biomass responses to different restoration techniques in a eutrophic environment

Eutrophication is a worldwide problem. In eutrophic lakes, phosphorus release from stored sediment hinders restoration processes. The epipelon is a community that grows attached to the sediment surface and has the potential to help phosphorus retention by autotrophic organisms. This study evaluated epipelon responses to four lake restoration techniques. The responses of abiotic variables and phytoplankton biomass were also evaluated. Four simultaneous mesocosm experiments were performed in a shallow eutrophic lake. The applied techniques were aeration, flocculant, floating macrophytes, and periphyton bioreactor. Water and epipelon samples were taken on days 3, 10, 17, 27, and 60. The aeration treatment and macrophytes decreased light availability in the epipelon, which had a predominance of heterotrophic components. Flocculant and periphyton bioreactor treatments favored epipelon growth with a higher contribution of autotrophic components. Therefore, some techniques may favor the epipelon growth, while others may harm the community, resulting in less efficient restoration processes. For the complete restoration of a lacustrine ecosystem, the choice of techniques to be applied must consider the restoration and maintenance of the benthic environment.

Algal migration and nutrient enrichment contribute to patterns in phytoplankton versus epiphyton communities

Algal dominance between phytoplankton and epiphyton plays an essential role in predicting shallow lake shifts between clear-water and turbid-water states. However, compared to resources competition, studies on algal life-form shifts between phytoplankton and epiphyton have traditionally received less interest, as few studies have focused on algal communities in both habitats concurrently. We conducted a 4 × 3 factorial design microcosm experiment to explore the mutual feedback relationship between phytoplankton and epiphyton. The initial algal life-form (epiphytic algae and phytoplanktonic algae alone or together) and nutrients enrichment (ambient, enrichment with N and P alone or together) were manipulated. After 28 days of incubation, the results suggested that the nutrient effects on the phytoplankton and epiphyton communities differed among the three different initial algal life-forms. A significant competitive advantage of phytoplankton was found even in treatments containing only epiphytic algae as the initial algal community. The contribution of nutrient enrichment to phytoplankton abundance (13%) was similar to that of epiphyton abundance (11%). In the mutual influence between two algal communities, epiphyton was likely to be a beneficiary as the phytoplankton community contributed 15% of the variance in epiphyton abundance. In addition, significant algal life-form shifts between phytoplankton and epiphyton only occurred in treatments containing one algal life-form, but not in treatments containing both algal life-forms at the beginning of the experiment. Our results emphasized the competitive advantage of phytoplankton in utilizing nutrient resources in the water column of shallow lakes. Moreover, we demonstrated that algal life-form shift was an adaptive behavior closely correlated with environmental variation. These results will provide broader insights to explore algal succession between phytoplankton and epiphyton in shallow lakes. To better understand the mutual influence mechanism between two algal life-forms under different nutrient conditions, research on multiple short time-scales based on algal migration is needed in the future.

Reducing the Phytoplankton Biomass to Promote the Growth of Submerged Macrophytes by Introducing Artificial Aquatic Plants in Shallow Eutrophic Waters

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms frequently occur in shallow eutrophic lakes and usually cause the decline of submerged vegetation. Therefore, artificial aquatic plants (AAPs) were introduced into enclosures in the eutrophic Dianchi Lake to investigate whether or not they could reduce cyanobacterial blooms and promote the growth of submerged macrophytes. On the 60th day after the AAPs were installed, the turbidity, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), and the cell density of phytoplankton (especially cyanobacteria) of the treated enclosures were significantly reduced as compared with the control enclosures. The adsorption and absorption of the subsequently formed periphyton biofilms attached to the AAPs effectively decreased nutrient levels in the water. Moreover, the microbial diversity and structure in the water changed with the development of periphyton biofilms, showing that the dominant planktonic algae shifted from Cyanophyta to Chlorophyta. The biodiversity of both planktonic and attached bacterial communities in the periphyton biofilm also gradually increased with time, and were higher than those of the control enclosures. The transplanted submerged macrophyte (Elodea nuttallii) in treated enclosures recovered effectively and reached 50% coverage in one month while those in the control enclosures failed to grow. The application of AAPs with incubated periphyton presents an environmentally-friendly and effective solution for reducing nutrients and controlling the biomass of phytoplankton, thereby promoting the restoration of submerged macrophytes in shallow eutrophic waters.

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal comparison between periphyton on artificial substrates and plant-periphyton complex in floating treatment wetlands

Artificial substrates (ASs) and floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) have been widely used in the treatment of polluted surface water. In fact, periphyton on ASs functions in nutrient removal, while the plant-periphyton complex functions in FTWs. However, the nutrient removal performance of the periphyton on ASs and the plant-periphyton complex in FTWs has not been systematically compared. Thus, ASs and FTWs were established in a mesocosm experiment to compare nitrogen and phosphorus removal between the two ecological treatment techniques. The results showed that the total nitrogen removal efficiency was 60.4% in the AS treatments and 65.3% in the FTWs, while the total phosphorus removal efficiency was 83.7% in the AS treatments and 39.45% in the FTWs. Periphyton on the ASs absorbed 2.5 g N m^-2 and 0.85 g P m^-2, accounting for 20.8% of the N removal and 18.7% of the P removal. Sedimentation contributed to 71.3% of the N removal and 56.1% of the P removal in the AS treatments. For the plant-periphyton complex in the FTWs, 25.1% of the N and 53.0% of the P accumulated in plant tissue. Most of the reduced N (47.1%) was removed by other pathways, which was likely the effect of periphyton attached on plant roots and floating rafts. The nutrient removal efficiencies and pathways of AS and FTW treatments showed different characteristics, providing a reference for the selection of treatment measures for polluted surface water remediation.
