Recent Advantages of Mediator Based Chemically Modified Electrodes; Powerful Approach in Electroanalytical Chemistry

Background:

Modified electrodes have advanced from the initial studies aimed at understanding electron transfer in films to applications in areas such as energy production and analytical chemistry. This review emphasizes the major classes of modified electrodes with mediators that are being explored for improving analytical methodology. Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) have been widely used to counter the problems of poor sensitivity and selectivity faced in bare electrodes. We have briefly reviewed the organometallic and organic mediators that have been extensively employed to engineer adapted electrode surfaces for the detection of different compounds. Also, the characteristics of the materials that improve the electrocatalytic activity of the modified surfaces are discussed.

Objective:

Improvement and promotion of pragmatic CMEs have generated a diversity of novel and probable strong detection prospects for electroanalysis. While the capability of handling the chemical nature of the electrode/solution interface accurately and creatively increases , it is predictable that different mediators-based CMEs could be developed with electrocatalytic activity and completely new applications be advanced.

Graphene-based Nanomaterials in Fighting the Most Challenging Viruses and Immunogenic Disorders

Viral diseases have long been among the biggest challenges for healthcare systems around the world. The recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is an example of how complicated the situation can get if we are not prepared to combat a viral outbreak in time, which brings up the need for quick and affordable biosensing platforms and vast knowledge of potential antiviral effects and drug/gene delivery opportunities. The same challenges have also existed for nonviral immunogenic disorders. Nanomedicine is considered a novel candidate for effectively overcoming these worldwide challenges. Among the versatile nanomaterials commonly used in biomedical applications, graphene has recently earned much attention thanks to its special and inspiring physicochemical properties, such as its large surface area, efficient thermal/electrical properties, carbon-based chemical purity with controllable biocompatibility, easy functionalization, capability of single-molecule detection, anticancer characteristics, 3D template feature in tissue engineering, and, in particular, antibacterial/antiviral activities. In this Review, the most important and challenging viruses of our era, such as human immunodeficiency virus, Ebola, SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, and hepatitis virus, and immunogenic disorders, such as asthma, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, in which graphene-based nanomaterials can effectively take part in the prevention, detection, treatment, medication, and health effect issues, have been covered and discussed.

Rapid label-free detection of intact pathogenic bacteria in situ via surface plasmon resonance imaging enabled by crossed surface relief gratings

The unique plasmonic energy exchange occurring within metallic crossed surface relief gratings (CSRGs) has recently motivated their use as biosensors. However, CSRG-based biosensing has been limited to spectroscopic techniques, failing to harness their potential for integration with ubiquitous portable electronics. Here, we introduce biosensing via surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) enabled by CSRGs. The SPRi platform is fully integrated including optics and electronics, has bulk sensitivity of 613 Pixel Intensity Unit (PIU)/Refractive Index Unit (RIU), a resolution of 10^-6 RIU and a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼33 dB. Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations confirm that CSRG-enabled SPRi is supported by an electric field intensity enhancement of ∼30 times, due to plasmon resonance at the metal-dielectric interface. In the context of real-world biosensing applications, we demonstrate the rapid (<35 min) and label-free detection of uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) in PBS and human urine samples for concentrations ranging from 10³ to 10⁹ CFU mL^-1. The detection limit of the platform is ∼100 CFU mL^-1, three orders of magnitude lower than the clinical detection limit for diagnosis of urinary tract infection. This work presents a new avenue for CSRGs as SPRi-based biosensing platforms and their great potential for integration with portable electronics for applications requiring in situ detection.
