Histological effects of exposure to home hair removal laser radiation in kidney and liver of Swiss albino rats

Although laser irradiation is becoming a common practice in medicine and is now considered a preferred therapy for many challenging pain management issues, there is no clear understanding of its side effects on physiological and histological parameters. The current study aimed to determine the safety of home laser irradiation on liver and kidney tissues. Male Swiss albino rats were purchased from the Department of Biology at Thi-Qar University. The rats were randomly divided into two equivalent groups, each containing six rats: a control group that was left unexposed and a second group that was exposed to six pulses of radiation per day (with a pulse duration of 2-3 milliseconds) for two weeks. The results of the current study did not show any changes in the kidney and liver tissues of the group treated with the laser. We concluded that using a home laser has no effect on kidney and liver tissues.

Citrobacter Koseri Skin and Soft Tissue Infection Complicated By Abscess Formation: A Case Report and a Review of Literature

Citrobacter koseri ( C. koseri ) can lead to severe infections in the neonates, elderly and immunocompromised patients. We describe the first reported case of an axillary abscess due to C. koseri in a healthy adolescent, and review the clinical aspects and associated risk factors of this rare condition.

The effect of long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser-assisted hair removal on some skin flora and pathogens: An in vivo study

Background The effect of NDYag on normal skin flora and pathogenic microbes has not been studied. Objectives Evaluation of immediate (before versus after each session) and delayed (pre-first session versus pre-fourth session) antimicrobial effect of Nd:YAG laser-assisted hair removal. Methods Thirty females scheduled for axillary Nd:YAG laser hair removal were included. Skin swabs were collected from the vault of the dominant axilla before and after each of the four sessions. Bacteriological cultures were performed to record the counts of total aerobes, total anaerobes, lipophilic bacteria, total staphylococci, Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), S. saprophyticus, S. hominis, and S. aureus. Reported changes in sweat odour and folliculitis (if present) were recorded. Results S.hominis was the predominant species in all subjects before and after all sessions. Counts of total aerobes, total anaerobes, lipophilic bacteria, total staphylococci, and S.hominis significantly decreased after all 4 sessions. A significant reduction was noted in the median colony counts before the fourth session as compared to the baseline count before the first session in total aerobes (278.9 versus 126.3 × 105 CFU/cm2, p = 0.003), total anaerobes (338.7 versus 103.7 × 105 CFU/cm2, p = 0.002) and total staphylococci (248.5 versus 105.0 × 105 CFU/cm2, p = 0.004). Most subjects reported worsened or unchanged axillary sweat odour. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between sweat odour and the counts of total aerobes (r = 0.433, p = 0.017), total anaerobes (r = 0.377, p = 0.040), total staphylococci (r = 0.383, p = 0.036) and S.hominis (r = 0.497, p = 0.005) ; lower counts were associated with a worsened odour. Limitations Small sample size; few laser sessions; short follow-up; subjective assessment of sweat odor and quantity. Conclusions Laser caused an immediate and delayed reduction in axillary aerobes, anaerobes, lipophilic bacteria, and staphylococci. This form of dysbiosis might lead to sweat odour changes.

Efficacy of laser hair removal in hidradenitis suppurativa: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by painful nodules, draining tunnels, and fibrotic scarring in intertriginous, hair-bearing areas. The pathogenesis involves follicular occlusion and subsequent rupture, leading to uncontrolled inflammation. Treatment options for HS are limited and lack universal effectiveness. Laser hair removal (LHR) has been explored as a potential treatment; however, the efficacy and appropriate laser modalities remain unclear. This systematic review examined the efficacy and adverse effects of LHR in HS.

METHODS

A comprehensive literature search was conducted from inception to September 2023 in Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and The Cochrane Library (Wiley) with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis was conducted.

RESULTS

Ten studies were selected (n = 227 total patients) and included six randomized controlled trials, two nonrandomized experimental studies, and two case series. Various laser modalities, including long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) (n = 115), intense pulsed light (n = 18), Alexandrite (n = 54), intralesional 1064 nm diode (n = 20), and combined fractional CO2 and long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser (n = 20), consistently demonstrated significant improvement in HS disease severity, irrespective of the disease scoring method used. Minimal adverse effects (primarily mild pain and erythema) were reported. A meta-analysis of three studies utilizing long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser demonstrated a standardized mean difference in disease severity of -1.68 (95% confidence interval: -2.99; -0.37), favoring treatment with LHR for HS.

CONCLUSIONS

Hair follicles are key in HS pathogenesis and all included studies showed a significant improvement in HS disease severity after LHR regardless of the laser device used, likely related to hair follicle unit destruction. HS is a complex and heterogenous condition, and multiple disease scoring methods complicate outcome comparisons across studies. However, LHR, utilizing various techniques, is an effective treatment option for HS with minimal adverse effects.

Multipass low fluence, high-frequency 755-nm alexandrite laser versus high fluence, low-frequency 1064-nm long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser in axillary hair reduction of dark skin phototypes: an intra-individual randomized comparative study

BACKGROUND

Laser hair removal has become popular means of achieving hair reduction with improved quality of life.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of Multipass low fluence, high-frequency 755-nm Alexandrite laser versus the high fluence, low-frequency 1064-nm long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser on axillary hair reduction in women with dark skin phototypes.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This study was carried out on 30 adult women [skin type, IV-VI)] who seek axillary hair reduction. These subjects were adjusted to receive 5 laser sessions with a 1-month interval. One side received high fluence, low-frequency 1064-nm laser where the other side received multipass low fluence, high-frequency 755 nm laser. The follow up was done using photographs, folliscope, patients' visual analog pain scale.

RESULTS

The mean percentage of hair density reduction showed significant improvement in both treated sides being higher in the Alex treated side with corresponding significant decreases in the mean hair thickness.

CONCLUSION

Multipass low fluence, high-frequency 755-nm Alex laser practice was verified to be safe and effective for hair removal in dark skin phototypes compared to the high fluence, low frequency 1064-nm long pulsed Nd:YAG laser.
