Abstract
Despite minoxidil and finasteride already being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of hair loss, it is important to identify new and innovative treatments for hair loss, such as looking for a solution in Chinese herbal medicine. One such treatment to consider is BeauTop (BT), whose primary ingredients include Panax japonicus (T.Nees), C.A. Mey. (Araliaceae), Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bunge (Fabaceae), Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Apiaceae), Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton (Oleaceae), Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC. (Plantaginaceae), and Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. (Compositae). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether BT can promote hair growth in C57BL/6 mice and to investigate hair coverage, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEFG), and the numbers of hair follicles in growth phase after oral administration. A total of 12 C57BL/6 mice were divided into two groups: control group and treatment group BT. BT was administered orally as an extract at a volume of 0.6 g/kg. The control group was treated with distilled water. Each group was treated once a day for 12 consecutive days. To observe the expression of VEGF distribution, the number of hair follicles and the hair coverage were examined on days 4, 8, and 12. By comparing the treatment group and control group, we found that VEGF in the BT group on day 8 presented with a higher area percentage than the control group (p value = 0.003). Hair follicle counting results showed that the BT group was significantly higher than the control group on day 8 (p value = 0.031). Furthermore, hair coverage was shown to be significantly increased in the treatment group BT on day 8 (p value = 0.013). Taken together, these results suggest that Chinese medicine (BT) possesses the potential effect of promoting hair growth through VEGF expression. VEGF is considered the most important mediator for the process of angiogenesis involved in hair growth development.

Abstract
Objective To explore the expression of HIF-1α, neuronal apoptosis and the influence of traditional Chinese medicine Sanqi on hematoma after brain injury in rats. Methods Ninety SD rats were divided into 3 groups randomly: blank control group, traumatic brain injury (TBI) group and Sanqi intervention group, and they were decapitated after brain injury at different time points: 6 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d, 5 d, 7 d. The model of cerebral hemorrhage was made by autologous non-coagulation in stereotactic locator, the expression of HIF-1α and TUNEL-positive cells (apoptotic cells) in the perihematomal area was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results In blank control group, a small amount of HIF-1α was expressed and apoptotic cells were observed. The expression of HIF-1α was up-regulated in the brain injury group from 6 h, and the apoptotic cells increased in abundance. The peak of HIF-1α was reached at 3 d, then decreased, and remained at the high level on the 7 d. Compared with blank control group, the TBI group was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Chinese medicine Sanqi intervention group significantly up-regulated HIF-1α'expression and decreased neuronal apoptosis, which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion HIF-1α's expression was up-regulated around the hematoma after brain injury, and the apoptosis of nerve cells was obviously increased. The traditional Chinese medicine Sanqi can significantly increase the expression of HIF-1α, reduce the apoptosis around the hematoma, and thus play a neuroprotective role.

Abstract
Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) are among the most important compounds extracted from Panax notoginseng root, and have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to control bleeding. PNS have recently garnered attention for the treatment of circulatory system diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of PNS on angiogenesis in vitro and to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying their actions. The present results demonstrated that the proliferative ability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was augmented following treatment with PNS. In addition, wound healing and Boyden chamber assays indicated that PNS may enhance HUVEC motility and increase the number of capillary-like tube branches in HUVECs. These effects were suppressed by 5′ adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitors. Furthermore, western blot analysis demonstrated that PNS stimulated the phosphorylation of AMPK and eNOS at Thr-172 and Ser-1179, respectively. These results suggested that PNS may promote tube formation in endothelial cells through AMPK- and eNOS-dependent signaling pathways.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the treatment effects of BeauTop in alopecia by observing its effectiveness in improving androgenetic alopecia. Hair growth was observed using a dermatoscope and clinical photos, and was scored by three dermatologists. Dermatologists evaluated and selected suitable participants for this study using the Norwood scale or Ludwig scale. A total of 40 participants with androgenetic alopecia were recruited in this study, and 32 participants completed the 6-month trial. The results revealed that in the BeauTop treatment group, 9/17 participants (52.9%) showed increased hair growth. Changes in hair growth were as follows: No change, 47.1% patients; minimally improved, 5.9% patients; moderately improved, 29.4% patients; and significantly improved, 17.6% patients. In the placebo group, 2/15 participants (13%) showed increased hair growth. A Chi-square test was performed and attained a value of 0.01

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the time-effect relation of extracts from ginseng, notoginseng and chuanxiong on angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced senescence of vascular endothelial cells and explore the feature of Chinese medicine against vascular diseases. METHODS Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured in vitro were stimulated with 10(-6) mol/L AngII to induce cell senescence, which were divided into 4 groups, the blank control group, the Ang II model group, the extracts group and the telmisartan group. The β-gal was used to identify senescence of cells, the cell counting kit-8 method was applied to assess the cell viability, the cell function was examined with the level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and the flow cytometry was used for analyzing the cell cycle changes. RESULTS Compared with the control cells, the cells positive for β-gal staining was significantly increased in the Ang II model group, and showed cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase with decreased S and G2/M phase cell percentage, eNOS expression and cell viability (P<0.05). The extracts and telmisartan treatment of Ang II-induced cells resulted in decreased β-gal positive cells with a reduction in G0/G1 phase cells and an increasing in S, G2/M phase cells and eNOS expression (P<0.05). At 24 h, the extracts were more effective than telmisartan (P<0.05); while telmisartan was more effective at 48 h (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Extracts from ginseng, notoginseng and chuanxiong can delay Ang II-induced aging of HUVECs and may play an important role in early senescence.

Abstract
Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) are one of the most important compounds derived from roots of the herb Panax notoginseng which are traditionally used as a hemostatic medicine to control internal and external bleeding in China for thousands of years. To date, at least twenty saponins were identified and some of them including notoginsenoside R1, ginsenoside Rb1, and ginsenoside Rg1 were researched frequently in the area of cardiovascular protection. However, the protective effects of PNS on cardiovascular diseases based on experimental studies and its underlying mechanisms have not been reviewed systematically. This paper reviewed the pharmacology of PNS and its monomers Rb1, Rg1, and R1 in the treatment for cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Objective. To evaluate the clinical curative effects of SPN injection on AP. Methods. Six databases were systematically searched including Cochrane Central, PubMed, EMBASE, CBM, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and VIP to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We assessed the quality of included studies, extracted valid data, and undertook meta-analysis following the steps of systematic review recommended by the Cochrane group. Results. Ten moderate-to-low quality randomized controlled trials involving 969 patients were included. There was no evidence that SPN alone had better or worse effects than conventional drugs on improving clinical symptoms (RR 1.09, 95% CI 0.85 to 1.39) and ECG (RR 1.17, 95% CI 0.84 to 1.63). However, there was an evidence that SPN combined with western medications was a better treatment option than conventional drugs alone in improving clinical symptoms (RR 1.28, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.33) and ECG (RR 1.27, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.45). No serious adverse effects were reported. Conclusion. Compared with conventional treatment, SPN may show the potential of optimizing symptomatic outcomes. As a kind of alternative and complementary medicine, SPN may provide another choice for AP patients and further large-scale high-quality trials are needed to confirm this efficacy.
