Eye movement trajectories in active visual search: Contributions of attention, memory, and scene boundaries to pattern formation

Saccadic momentum and attentive control in V4 neurons during visual search

Saccadic momentum refers to the increased probability of making a saccade in a forward direction relative to the previous saccade. During visual search and free viewing conditions saccadic probability falls in a gradient from forward to backward directions. It has been considered to reflect an oculomotor bias for a continuing motor plan. Here we report that a saccadic momentum gradient is observed in nonhuman primate behavior and in the visual responses of cortical area V4 neurons during a conjunction style visual search task. This result suggests that saccadic momentum arises in part from a biased spatial distribution of visual responses to stimuli. The effect is independent of feature-based selective attention and overridden by directed spatial attention. The implications of saccadic momentum for search guidance are much broader and robust than the inhibition-of-return's presumed role in preventing refixation of recent locations.

The importance of search strategy for finding targets in open terrain

A number of real-world search tasks (i.e. police search, detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs)) require searchers to search exhaustively across open ground. In the present study, we simulated this problem by asking individuals (Experiments 1a and 1b) and dyads (Experiment 2) to search for coin targets pseudo-randomly located in a bounded area of open grassland terrain. In Experiment 1a, accuracy, search time, and the route used to search an area were measured. Participants tended to use an 'S'-shaped pattern with a common width of search lane. Increased accuracy was associated with slower, but also variable, search speed, though only when participants moved along the length (as opposed to across the width) of the search area. Experiment 1b varied the number of targets available within the bounded search area and in doing so varied target prevalence and density. The results confirmed that the route taken in Experiment 1a generalizes across variations in target prevalence/density. In Experiment 2, accuracy, search time, and the search strategy used by dyads was measured. While dyads were more accurate than individuals, dyads that opted to conduct two independent searches were more accurate than those who opted to split the search space. The implications of these results for individuals and dyads when searching for targets in open space are discussed.

Active inhibition and memory promote exploration and search of natural scenes

Active exploration of the visual world depends on sequential shifts of gaze that bring prioritized regions of a scene into central vision. The efficiency of this system is commonly attributed to a mechanism of "inhibition of return" (IOR) that discourages re-examination of previously-visited locations. Such a process is fundamental to computational models of attentional selection and paralleled by neurophysiological observations of inhibition of target-related activity in visuomotor areas. However, studies examining eye movements in naturalistic visual scenes appear to contradict the hypothesis that IOR promotes exploration. Instead, these reports reveal a surprisingly strong tendency to shift gaze back to the previously fixated location, suggesting that refixations might even be facilitated under natural conditions. Here we resolve this apparent contradiction, based on a probabilistic analysis of gaze patterns recorded during both free-viewing and search of naturalistic scenes. By simulating saccadic selection based on instantaneous influences alone, we show that the observed frequency of return saccades is in fact substantially less than predicted for a memoryless system, demonstrating that refixation is actively inhibited under natural viewing conditions. Furthermore, these observations reveal that gaze history significantly influences the way in which natural scenes are explored, contrary to accounts that suggest visual search has no memory.
