Abstract
Pseudoisochromatic stimuli have been widely used to evaluate color discrimination and to identify color vision deficits. Luminance noise is one of the stimulus parameters used to ensure that subject's response is due to their ability to discriminate target stimulus from the background based solely on the hue between the colors that compose such stimuli. We studied the influence of contrast modulation of the stimulus luminance noise on threshold and reaction time color discrimination. We evaluated color discrimination thresholds using the Cambridge Color Test (CCT) at six different stimulus mean luminances. Each mean luminance condition was tested using two protocols: constant absolute difference between maximum and minimum luminance of the luminance noise (constant delta protocol, CDP), and constant contrast modulation of the luminance noise (constant contrast protocol, CCP). MacAdam ellipses were fitted to the color discrimination thresholds in the CIE 1976 color space to quantify the color discrimination ellipses at threshold level. The same CDP and CCP protocols were applied in the experiment measuring RTs at three levels of stimulus mean luminance. The color threshold measurements show that for the CDP, ellipse areas decreased as a function of the mean luminance and they were significantly larger at the two lowest mean luminances, 10 cd/m2 and 13 cd/m2, compared to the highest one, 25 cd/m2. For the CCP, the ellipses areas also decreased as a function of the mean luminance, but there was no significant difference between ellipses areas estimated at six stimulus mean luminances. The exponent of the decrease of ellipse areas as a function of stimulus mean luminance was steeper in the CDP than CCP. Further, reaction time increased linearly with the reciprocal of the length of the chromatic vectors varying along the four chromatic half-axes. It decreased as a function of stimulus mean luminance in the CDP but not in the CCP. The findings indicated that visual performance using pseudoisochromatic stimuli was dependent on the Weber's contrast of the luminance noise. Low Weber's contrast in the luminance noise is suggested to have a reduced effect on chromatic information and, hence, facilitate desegregation of the hue-defined target from the background.

Abstract
We examine the functional role of S-cone signals on reaction time (RT) variability in human color vision. Stimuli were selected along red-green and blue-yellow cardinal directions and at random directions in the isoluminant plane of the color space. Trial-to-trial RT variability was not statistically independent but correlated across experimental conditions and exhibited 1/f noise spectra with an exponent close to unity in most of the cases. Regarding contrast coding, 1/f noise for random chromatic stimuli at isoluminance was similar to that for achromatic stimuli, thus suggesting that S-cone signals reduce variability of higher order color mechanisms. If we regard spatial coding, the effect of S-cone density in the retina on RT variability was investigated. The magnitude of 1/f noise at 16 min of arc (S-cone free zone) was higher than at 90 min of arc in the blue-yellow channel, and it was similar for the red-green channel. The results suggest that S-cone signals are beneficial and they modulate 1/f noise spectra at postreceptoral stages. The implications related to random multiplicative processes as a possible source of 1/f noise and the optimal information processing in color vision are discussed.

Abstract
We examined different contrast metrics to scale visual latencies for suprathreshold stimuli modulated along tritan confusion lines. S-cone increments ('blue') and decrements ('yellow') were isolated along two different tritan confusion lines, each one having a different luminance value. Reaction times (RT) were evaluated as a function of the Weber contrast and the S-cone excitation ratio between the test stimulus and the background. RTs were described using a model that generalizes Piéron's law and incorporates the notion of threshold units and power law scaling. Our results show that RTs for S-cone increments and decrements equate better when using the S-cone excitation ratio. However, a single function did not describe all RT data. S-cone RTs are better described by separate functions. We conclude that S-cone increments and decrements do not scale in the same manner. Both Weber contrast and the S-cone excitation ratio are plausible metrics at isoluminance. The implications for the S-cone pathways are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this article, retinal-image quality and contrast sensitivity were measured in 25 patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and 15 patients with normal retinal health. MATERIALS AND METHOD Retinal-image quality was evaluated with an objective device based on the double-pass technique, and for visual performance we measured the contrast-sensitivity function. RESULTS The results from double-pass device revealed the Strehl ratio to be significantly (p < 0.0001) lower for the ARMD group with a 54.3% reduction for 3 mm pupil size and a 46.9% reduction for 4 mm. Contrast-sensitivity function for ARMD subjects was also significantly lower than for the control group (p < 0.05) with a 38.6% reduction. CONCLUSIONS Patients affected with ARMD showed poorer retinal-image quality and visual performance than normal subjects. The use of objective devices based on the double-pass technique could be useful for the accurate description of the retinal-image quality of ARMD eyes, in which retinal scattering is significantly increased.

Abstract
We evaluate the effect of the emmetropization technique LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) on stereoscopic vision. For this, we used a mirror stereoscope to measure the upper disparity limit D(max) before (with best correction) and after LASIK for 30 patients. The results show that the upper disparity limit declines from 41.1 min of arc on average to 31.3 min of arc after LASIK, being significant in 83% of the patients. This deterioration is significantly correlated with an increase in the postsurgical interocular differences in higher-order aberrations, corneal asphericity, and presurgical anisometropia. New ablation algorithms should minimize interocular differences in order to improve binocular visual performance.

Abstract
Using a noise-masking paradigm we test the notion of binocular detection mechanisms that combine luminance and colour contrast. Binocular summation was measured for achromatic and red-green isoluminant Gabor stimuli over a range of temporal frequencies and was compared with and without the presence of a two-dimensional, dynamic, luminance noise mask (correlated). While we found that luminance noise reduced binocular luminance summation at all temporal frequencies, binocular red-green summation was reduced only at frequencies of 8 Hz and above. Our results suggest the existence of binocular colour-luminance interactions restricted to high temporal frequencies.

Abstract
We evaluated binocular summation, eye dominance, and learning in the Trivector and Ellipses procedures of the Cambridge Colour Test (CCT). Subjects (n = 36, 18-30 years old) were recruited among students and staff from the University of São Paulo. Inclusion criteria were absence of ophthalmological complaints and best-corrected Snellen VA 20/20 or better. The subjects were tested in three randomly selected eye conditions: binocular, monocular dominant eye, and nondominant eye. Results obtained in the binocular and monocular conditions did not differ statistically for thresholds measured along the protan, deutan, and tritan confusion axes (ANOVA, P > 0.05). No statistical difference was detected among discrimination ellipses obtained in binocular or monocular conditions (ANOVA, P > 0.05), suggesting absence of binocular summation or of an effect of eye dominance. Possible effects of learning were examined by comparing successive thresholds obtained in the three testing conditions. There was no evidence of improvement as a function of testing order (ANCOVA, P > 0.05). We conclude that CCT thresholds are not affected by binocularity, eye dominance, or learning. Our results differ from those found by Verriest et al. (1982) using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test and Hovis et al. (2004) using the Farnsworth-Munsell panel D-15 test.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze binocular visual function after LASIK. METHODS Eye aberrometry and corneal topography was obtained for both eyes in 68 patients (136 eyes). To evaluate visual performance, monocular and binocular contrast sensitivity function and disturbance index for quantifying halos were measured. Tests were performed under mesopic conditions. RESULTS Binocular summation and disturbance index diminished significantly (P<.0001) after LASIK with increasing interocular differences in corneal and eye aberrations. Binocular visual deterioration was greater than monocular deterioration for contrast sensitivity function and disturbance index. CONCLUSIONS Binocular function deteriorates more than monocular function after LASIK. This deterioration increases as the interocular differences in aberrations and corneal shape increase. Improvements in ablation algorithms should minimize these interocular differences.

Abstract
To examine the type of chromatic interactions at isoluminance in the phenomenon of binocular vision, I have determined simple visual reaction times (VRT) under three observational conditions (monocular left, monocular right, and binocular) for different chromatic stimuli along random color axes at isoluminance (simultaneous L-, M-, and S-cone variations). Upper and lower boundaries of probability summation as well as the binocular capacity coefficient were estimated with observed distributions of reaction times. The results were not consistent with the notion of independent chromatic channels between eyes, suggesting the existence of excitatory and inhibitory binocular interactions at suprathreshold isoluminance conditions.

Abstract
Binocular vision implies the fusion of the right and left retinal images to perceive a single image. For this, interocular interaction is required. We measured the reaction times to carry out a visual fixation task in order to determine whether binocular interaction influences performance. Several combinations of test and distraction stimuli were monocularly and binocularly presented to one monkey and three human subjects. The overall median reaction times were 340 ms for the animal and 308, 342 and 381 for human subjects 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Reaction time was shorter when the test stimulus was presented binocularly. Moreover, we observed that the presence of a distraction stimulus increased the reaction time and that a correlated distraction stimulus had a greater influence on this increase than an uncorrelated distraction stimulus. These findings indicate that with binocular vision a more rapid performance of a visual task occurs.
