Evidence for a significant contribution of interactions between oriented line segments in the Tolansky version of the Poggendorff illusion

The predictive power of trajectory motion

When the central region of an obliquely oriented line is bisected by a wide, vertical opaque occluder, observers misperceive the two line segments as being misaligned (the Poggendorff illusion). If the oblique line segment is replaced with a spot moving on an oblique trajectory, little if any misalignment is perceived. This accurate alignment of oblique segments depends upon the consistent motion of the dot along the oblique trajectory and not other temporal or spatial characteristics of the motion-defined segments since random plotting of the dot along each oblique segment resulted in robust misalignment. The nullification of the Poggendorff illusion was also obtained if only one of the segments was defined by a moving spot so long as the spot moved in a direction that 'pointed' to the static segment. Moreover, if the occluder boundary was defined by rows of vertically moving dots, was filled with vertically moving dots or was a real (cardboard) occluder, the motion-defined oblique segments were still perceived to be aligned with little error, consistent with the unimpaired detection of a trajectory dot in noise interrupted by similar occluders [Watamaniuk, S. N. J. & McKee, S. P. (1995). 'Seeing' motion behind occluders. Nature, 377, 729-730]. The results are interpreted as evidence that trajectory motion produces a cascade of activity in appropriately aligned motion detectors, in the direction of motion, that continues after the moving object has been occluded to produce a prediction of where the moving object should reappear.

Relative contribution of lateral inhibition to the Delboeuf and Wundt-Hering illusions

It has been suggested that lateral neural interactions contribute to some illusions with intersecting or converging line elements but cannot be present in figures that lack these components. Most attempts to ascertain the contribution of neural interactions in visual illusions have involved changes in the actual pattern of illusion. It has now been demonstrated that certain forms of intermittent light stimulation can enhance lateral inhibitory activity. The Wundt-Hering and the Delboeuf illusions were tested under continuous illumination and "shaped" intermittent illumination which augments lateral inhibition. As expected, the Delboeuf illusion was unchanged with increased lateral inhibition while the magnitude of the Wundt-Hering illusion increased.

The orientation of a parallel-line texture between the verticals can modify the strength of the Poggendorff illusion

In the present experiments, we attempted to evaluate the modification of the strength of the Poggendorff illusion as a function of the different orientation of a parallel-line texture filling the space between the vertical lines. In Experiment 1, the standard version of the Poggendorff configuration was tested against four different parallel-line textures oriented at 0 degrees, 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees with respect to the obliques. The results showed that the illusory effect was a linear function of the progressive discrepancy between the angle of the lines of the texture and that of the obliques. In Experiment 2, we tested the same textures used in Experiment 1 after the elimination of the two vertical lines. The data obtained approximated a linear function, as in the previous experiment, but the alignment errors were consistently lower. The statistical analysis performed on the data of all eight experimental conditions shows that both factors--texture and presence/absence of verticals--were significant, but most of the effect was due to the texture factor. The results may be interpreted through the "perceptual compromise hypothesis," originally proposed for the bisection forms of the Poggendorff illusion, but with important modifications. The data are also discussed in terms of their implications for other theories proposed for the Poggendorff illusion.

The role of angles in inducing misalignment in the Poggendorff figure

Much experimental evidence has been put forward against the idea that angles are necessary for the occurrence of the Poggendorff illusion. We show that five separate alignment illusions can be demonstrated in the Poggendorff figure according to its orientation, length of the parallels, and so on. In one of these (angle-caused misalignment) angles are a necessary component. The main source of the belief that angles are not necessary is the alignment illusion (attraction-caused misalignment), which is due to the action of the distant parallel on the transversal that does not abut it. We show finally that it is unlikely that the angle-caused misalignment illusion is due to a change in the apparent size of the angle.

Constant errors in judgements of collinearity due to the presence of neighbouring objects

If a line (the pointer) is aligned with a dot (the target) that stands on another line (the induction line) which is at an angle to the pointer, the pointer and the dot may no longer appear collinear. Whether they do or not depends upon the angle formed by the pointer with the induction line: the smaller the angle, the greater the misalignment effect. Misalignment is always in the direction of the induction line, which is why this alignment illusion is called attraction-caused misalignment (attraction misalignment for short). Three experiments are described in which this illusion is explored further. In the first it is shown that the induction line can exert its influence even when not contiguous with the target, though the size of the effect varies inversely with the distance of the induction line from the target. In the second experiment it is demonstrated that a dot as well as a line can induce attraction misalignment and that similarity between the induction and target items increases misalignment. Evidence in support of the theory that the termination of the induction line, as well as the part contiguous with the target dot, may induce attraction misalignment is provided in the third experiment.
