The modulation of semantic transparency on the recognition memory for two-character Chinese words

Effects of Word Semantic Transparency, Context Length, and L1 Background on CSL Learners' Incidental Learning of Word Meanings in Passage-Level Reading

This study investigated the effects of semantic transparency of Chinese disyllabic compound words on Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners' incidental learning of word meanings in sentence-level reading and passage-level reading. The accuracy of the learners' lexical inferencing was compared among various types of words (transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque words), different context lengths (sentence and passage contexts), and learners with different L1 backgrounds (with and without a Chinese character background in their L1s). In the study, ninety CSL adult learners were asked to infer the meanings of target words in the sentence context and the passage context. The results indicated that the effects of semantic transparency and context length on inferencing accuracy were significant, while the effect of L1 background was not. It was also found that there were significant interactions between transparency and context length as well as between transparency and L1 background.

The neural basis of compound word processing revealed by varying semantic transparency and morphemic neighborhood size

This study investigated the neural basis of compound word processing by using fMRI and Chinese two-character compounds for lexical decision. Semantic transparency and morphemic neighborhood size were manipulated to augment the processing profile for measurement. The behavioral results disclosed a semantic transparency effect and its interaction with the neighborhood size, which supported existence of a mechanism for compound processing. The fMRI results located a neural substrate in the left inferior prefrontal cortex (BA 45) which reacted in an interactive manner to the two variables. While its activities were lower when their neighborhood size was larger for processing transparent compounds, its activities became higher when their neighborhood size was larger for processing opaque compounds. When scaling to a larger scope, the function of this mechanism fitted well with the theoretical account of unification function of the left inferior frontal cortex for language processing.

Unitization does not impede overall item recognition performance: Behavioral and event-related potential study

It is widely accepted that unitization can promote familiarity-based associative recognition, but the role of unitization in recognition of individual component elements which originate from compound words remains unclear. The goals of this study were to elaborate on how unitization affects item recognition and further examine the effect of unitization on the extent to which familiarity and recollection contribute to item recognition. During the study phase, participants were asked to learn 48 compound words and 48 unrelated word pairs, and during the test phase, they were instructed to distinguish old from new words. We disassociated the contribution of familiarity and recollection to recognition with remember/know paradigm in experiment 1 and with ERPs old/new effects in experiment 2. The results showed that the overall item recognition was equivalent between the two retrieval conditions. Disassociation the contribution of familiarity and recollection, we found that there was higher recollection-based item recognition performance for compound-old words than for unrelated-old words in experiment 1. In contrast, in experiment 2, the magnitude of later parietal old/new effect related to recollection was larger for the former than for the latter, indicating that equivalent levels of memory retrieval were achieved through "less" neural correlates of familiarity and recollection. By synthesizing the results of experiment 1 and 2, we believed unitization did not impede overall item recognition performance.

Unitization improves item recognition through less overall neural processing

It is widely accepted that unitization can promote familiarity-based associative recognition, but the role of unitization in recognition of individual component elements remains unclear. Our goals of this study were to elaborate how unitization influenced item recognition and to further examine the effect of unitization on the extent to which familiarity and recollection contributed to item recognition. The results showed that unitization could facilitate item recognition through reducing the contribution of recollection. Together with previous findings that unitization could facilitate associative recognition, we believed unitization was an effective encoding strategy to improve memory performance.

Distinguishing familiarity from fluency for the compound word pair effect in associative recognition

We examined whether processing fluency contributes to associative recognition of unitized pre-experimental associations. In Experiments 1A and 1B, we minimized perceptual fluency by presenting each word of pairs on separate screens at both study and test, yet the compound word (CW) effect (i.e., hit and false-alarm rates greater for CW pairs with no difference in discrimination) did not reduce. In Experiments 2A and 2B, conceptual fluency was examined by comparing transparent (e.g., hand bag) and opaque (e.g., rag time) CW pairs in lexical decision and associative recognition tasks. Lexical decision was faster for transparent CWs (Experiment 2A) but in associative recognition, the CW effect did not differ by CW pair type (Experiment 2B). In Experiments 3A and 3B, we examined whether priming that increases processing fluency would influence the CW effect. In Experiment 3A, CW and non-compound word pairs were preceded with matched and mismatched primes at test in an associative recognition task. In Experiment 3B, only transparent and opaque CW pairs were presented. Results showed that presenting matched versus mismatched primes at test did not influence the CW effect. The CW effect in yes-no associative recognition is due to reliance on enhanced familiarity of unitized CW pairs.
