Porous N- and S-doped carbon-carbon composite electrodes by soft-templating for redox flow batteries

Investigation of element migration characteristics and product properties during biomass pyrolysis: a case study of pine cones rich in nitrogen

To further understand the element migration characteristics and product properties during biomass pyrolysis, herein, pine cone (PC) cellulose and PC lignin were prepared, and their pyrolysis behavior was determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Subsequently, the PC was pyrolyzed in a vertical fixed bed reactor system at 400–700 °C for 60 min. The characteristics of element migration and the physicochemical properties of the pyrolysis products were analyzed and discussed. In the pyrolysis temperature range from 200 °C to 500 °C, there were two distinct weight loss peaks for PC. During the pyrolysis process, the C element was primarily retained in the biochar, while the O element mainly migrated into liquid and gaseous products in the form of compounds such as CO₂, CO, and H₂O. Besides, 28.42–76.01% of the N element in PC migrated into biochar. Of the three-phase products, the gases endow the lowest energy yield, while the energy of the biochar dominates the pyrolysis of the PC. Additionally, the N content and specific surface area for the PC-derived biochar obtained at 400 °C in a N₂ atmosphere were higher than those of the biochar derived from fiberboard.

Porous carbon-carbon composite electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries synthesized by twin polymerization

Highly porous carbon–carbon composite electrodes have been synthesized by surface twin polymerization on a macroporous polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based substrate. For this purpose the compound 2,2′-spirobi[benzo-4H-1,3,2-dioxasiline] (Spiro), being a molecular precursor for phenolic resin and silica, was polymerized onto PAN-based felts with subsequent thermal transformation of the hybrid material-coated felt into silica-containing carbon. The following etching step led to high surface carbon–carbon composite materials, where each carbon component served a different function in the battery electrode: the carbon fiber substrate possesses a high electron conductivity, while the amorphous carbon coating provides the catalytic function. For characterization of the composite materials with respect to structure, porosity and pore size distribution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as nitrogen sorption measurements (BET) were performed. The electrochemical performance of the carbon felts (CF) for application in all-vanadium redox flow batteries was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared to the pristine PAN-based felt the composite electrodes show significantly enhanced surface areas (up to 35 times higher), which increases the amount of vanadium ions that could be adsorbed onto the surface and thus contributes to an increased performance.

A novel all-fiber-based LiFePO4/Li4Ti5O12 battery with self-standing nanofiber membrane electrodes

Electrodes with high conductivity and flexibility are crucial to the development of flexible lithium-ion batteries. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO₄ and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ fiber membrane materials were prepared through electrospinning and directly used as self-standing electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. The structure and morphology of the fibers, and the electrochemical performance of the electrodes and the full battery were characterized. The results show that the LiFePO₄ and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ fiber membrane electrodes exhibit good rate and cycle performance. In particular, the all-fiber-based gel-state battery composed of LiFePO₄ and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ fiber membrane electrodes can be charged/discharged for 800 cycles at 1C with a retention capacity of more than 100 mAh·g^-1 and a coulombic efficiency close to 100%. The good electrochemical performance is attributed to the high electronic and ionic conductivity provided by the 3D network structure of the self-standing electrodes. This design and preparation method for all-fiber-based lithium-ion batteries provides a novel strategy for the development of high-performance flexible batteries.
