Fire Performance of Cotton Fabrics Coated with 10-(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9-xa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO-HQ) Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

We investigated the performance of cotton fabrics coated with DOPO-HQ and Zr-based Metal-organic Frameworks when exposed to fire. The chemical structure of the cotton fabrics before and after the coating was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, and the surface morphology of cotton and their combustion residues was probed via scanning electron microscopy. In our experiments, we used flammability tests and thermogravimetric methods to understand the burning behavior of the coated fibers, as well as their thermal stability. The cotton fabrics coated with DOPO-HQ and Zr MOFs exhibited shorter combustion times, had better thermal degradation properties, promoted the creation of heat-insulating layers, and exhibited improved smoke suppression behavior.

Recent progress on MOF-based optical sensors for VOC sensing

The raising apprehension of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures urges the exploration of advanced monitoring platforms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide many attractive features including tailorable porosity, high surface areas, good chemical/thermal stability, and various host-guest interactions, making them appealing candidates for VOC capture and sensing. To comprehensively exploit the potential of MOFs as sensing materials, great efforts have been dedicated to the shaping and patterning of MOFs for next-level device integration. Among different types of sensors (chemiresistive sensors, gravimetric sensors, optical sensors, etc.), MOFs coupled with optical sensors feature distinctive strength. This review summarized the latest advancements in MOF-based optical sensors with a particular focus on VOC sensing. The subject is discussed by different mechanisms: colorimetry, luminescence, and sensors based on optical index modulations. Critical analysis for each system highlighting practical aspects was also deliberated.

Solvent-exchange process in MOF ultrathin films and its effect on CO2 and methanol adsorption

Metal-organic framework (MOF) activation is crucial for the use of MOFs in several applications and solvent-exchange process is a necessary step in many activation methods. In this contribution, we have explored in situ MOF monolayer film formation at the air-water interface. Nanoparticles (NPs) of the Al trimesate MIL-96(Al) retain chloroform into their micropores, which considerably diminishes the CO₂ adsorption capacity of MOF films. However, a solvent-exchange process between chloroform and water increases CO₂ film adsorption capacity by 30%. Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TRXF) allows studying the kinetics of this process at the air-water interface, that strongly depends on the NP size. The conclusions derived from in situ studies allow optimizing the ex situ activation procedure of MIL-96(Al) films deposited onto quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) substrates in order to maximize CO₂ and methanol adsorption.
