Synthesis, characterization, and growth simulations of Cu-Pt bimetallic nanoclusters

Substitutional-interstitial structural transition in Cu-Pt nano-alloys

Copper-platinum alloys are important binary alloys in catalysis. In this communication, we demonstrate that it is possible to preserve the thermal properties of platinum with a copper-platinum alloy by converting the substitutional alloy into an interstitial one. This conversion occurs when the size of the copper-platinum system is reduced down to the nanoscale. The size-dependent phase diagram of Cu-Pt for a spherical nanoparticle is calculated at various sizes (50, 10 and 5 nm) demonstrating that Cu-Pt alloyed nanoparticles can be formed all over the composition range. Experimentally, the electron microscopy characterization of copper-platinum alloyed nanoparticles synthesized by wet chemistry supports the predicted structural transition.

Thermodynamics of CuPt nanoalloys

The control of structural and chemical transitions in bimetallic nanoalloys at finite temperatures is one of the challenges for their use in advanced applications. Comparing Nested Sampling and Molecular Dynamics simulations, we investigate the phase changes of CuPt nanoalloys with the aim to elucidate the role of kinetic effects during their solidification and melting processes. We find that the quasi-thermodynamic limit for the nucleation of (CuPt)₃₀₉ is 965 ± 10 K, but its prediction is increasingly underestimated when the system is cooled faster than 10⁹ K/s. The solidified nanoparticles, classified following a novel tool based on Steinhardt parameters and the relative orientation of characteristic atomic environments, are then heated back to their liquid phase. We demonstrate the kinetic origin of the hysteresis in the caloric curve as (i) it closes for rates slower than 10⁸ K/s, with a phase change temperature of 970 K ± 25 K, in very good agreement with its quasi-thermodynamic limit; (ii) the process happens simultaneously in the inner and outer layers; (iii) an onion-shell chemical order - Cu-rich surface, Pt-rich sub-surface, and mixed core - is always preserved.

Time Recovery for a Complex Process Using Accelerated Dynamics

The hyperdynamics method (HD) developed by Voter (J. Chem. Phys. 1996, 106, 4665) sets the theoretical basis to construct an accelerated simulation scheme that holds the time scale information. Since HD is based on transition state theory, pseudoequilibrium conditions (PEC) must be satisfied before any system in a trapped state may be accelerated. As the system evolves, many trapped states may appear, and the PEC must be assumed in each one to accelerate the escape. However, since the system evolution is a priori unknown, the PEC cannot be permanently assumed to be true. Furthermore, the different parameters of the bias function used may need drastic recalibration during this evolution. To overcome these problems, we present a general scheme to switch between HD and conventional molecular dynamics (MD) in an automatic fashion during the simulation. To decide when HD should start and finish, criteria based on the energetic properties of the system are introduced. On the other hand, a very simple bias function is proposed, leading to a straightforward on-the-fly set up of the required parameters. A way to measure the quality of the simulation is suggested. The efficiency of the present hybrid HD-MD method is tested for a two-dimensional model potential and for the coalescence process of two nanoparticles. In spite of the important complexity of the latter system (165 degrees of freedoms), some relevant mechanistic properties were recovered within the present method.

Multiscale approach for studying melting transitions in CuPt nanoparticles

Synthesis and characterization of Au–Fe alloy nanoparticles embedded in a silica matrix by atom beam sputtering

AuFe alloy nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a silica matrix were synthesized using an atom beam sputtering setup. Increasing the metal fraction in the thin films from 16 at% to 33 at% results in the formation of alloy NPs.
