Abstract
This study aimed to assess the anatomical variations of the mandibular symphysis in a normal occlusion population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated 200 CBCT scans of patients aged ≥17 with class I occlusion, 1-3 mm overbite and overjet, and <3 mm crowding. The CBCT scans were obtained with NewTom 3G scanner with the exposure settings of 110 kVp, 1.2 mA, 5.4 s time, and six-inch field of view and saved in NNT Viewer. The anterior loop length, labial bone thickness, mandibular bone height at the symphysis, and cortical bone thickness at the right and left canine teeth and central and lateral incisors were measured and compared between males and females and different age groups using one-way ANOVA. The intra- and inter-observer agreements for all landmarks were ICC >0.9 (excellent). The mean length of the anterior loop in females was significantly greater than that in males (P=0.02). Different age groups had significant differences in cortical bone width at the site of the left canine (P=0.03) and vertical bone height at the site of the right central incisor (P=0.05). The majority of parameters related to the mandibular symphysis were greater in normal occlusion males than females. Preoperative CBCT assessment of the mandibular symphysis can greatly help in diagnosis and treatment planning as well as bone harvesting from this area.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aimed to review the epidemiologic, topographic, and morphometric aspects of the mental foramen (MF) and anterior loop (AL) on cone-beam computed tomographic imaging studies. METHODS An International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO)-registered systematic review (CRD42018112991) was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Two reviewers independently performed data extraction from observational studies that evaluated MF and AL on 7 electronic databases. MedCalc (MedCalc Software bv, Ostend, Belgium) software was used to perform a meta-analysis with a 95% confidence level. RESULTS Of 1545 articles, 66 met the inclusion criteria, totaling 14,233 patients from 5 continents, with a total of 6655 females and 5884 males (some studies did not report sex), with an age range between 8 and 89 years. The most prevalent shapes of MF were oval (48.72%) and circular (44.36%), and the most frequent horizontal positions were between premolars (43.66%) and in line with the long axis of the second premolar (43.12%). CONCLUSIONS Based on the articles that assessed AL, the mean prevalence was 43.18%, with most studies reporting bilateral localization as the most prevalent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review and meta-analyse the Alveolar Bone Thickness (ABT) overlying healthy teeth. The secondary objective was to review the association of ABT with gender, age, and smoking. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to July 2020. English articles (sample size≥10) which had used CT or CBCT to measure the ABT at clearly defined reference points were included. The maximum likelihood approach meta-analysis was used to estimate the means (95% CIs). RESULTS A total of 68 articles were included. The meta-analysis results were as follows: In the anterior maxilla, the mean labial plate thickness ranged from 0.42-1.75mm, while it was thicker for the posterior teeth (0.78-4.31mm). The palatal plate thickness ranged from 0.97-8.13mm. In the anterior mandible, the thickness of labial and lingual plates ranged from 0.4-3.71mm and 0.38-5.44mm, respectively. The alveolar bone was thicker for the posterior teeth both at the labial (0.66-6.31mm) and lingual (2.31-7.77mm) sides. Meta-regression revealed a significant relationship between gender and ABT at several points. There was a controversy regarding the association of ABT with age. No significant difference was evidenced between smokers and non-smokers. CONCLUSIONS This study presents a clear image of the alveolar bone structure. Since it has pooled ABT values from various populations, outcomes could be acknowledged as global averages. Therefore, it could provide perspective for several dental procedures, including orthodontic treatments and immediate implant placement.

Abstract
Background and objectives: This study investigated the morphology of the labial and palatal bony wall of the maxillary central and lateral incisors using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The difference between males and females and the measurement between right and left sides were measured. Materials and Methods: Twenty participants, consisting of 11 females and 9 males having normal occlusion, were used for the analysis. The mean age was 21.9 ± 3.0 years. The thickness of the labial bony wall and palatal bony wall, perpendicular to the long axis of the root, were evaluated at 3 and 5 mm apical from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and at the root apex. The available bony wall below the apex of the central and lateral incisors, and the angulation between the long axis of the tested tooth and outer surface of the labial bone were measured. Results: The mean labial bony wall thickness at the 3 and 5 mm apical from the CEJ were 1.1 ± 0.3 mm and 1.0 ± 0.4 mm for central incisors, respectively, as well as 1.2 ± 0.4 mm and 1.0 ± 0.4 mm for lateral incisors, respectively. The mean palatal bony wall thickness at 5 mm from the CEJ was above 2 mm in the central and lateral incisors. The percentage of labial bony wall thickness 2 mm or greater at the root apex in central incisors was higher than in lateral incisors (62.5% vs. 55.0%). The percentage of palatal bony wall thickness ≥2 mm at 3 mm apical from the CEJ in the central incisors was higher than in the lateral incisors (37.5% vs. 15.0%). The results on the left and right sides did not show statistically significant differences, except in the labial and palatal bony wall thickness at 3 mm from the CEJ in the lateral incisor. Generally, no significant differences were seen between males and females, but males had a significantly higher labial bony wall thickness at 3 and 5 mm from the CEJ in the central and lateral incisors when compared with females. Conclusions: This study showed that a majority of the cases of Korean participants had less than 2 mm of labial bony wall thickness at 3 and 5 mm apical from the CEJ at central and lateral incisors, and this should be kept in mind while performing dental practices, including tooth extraction or immediate implantation in anterior regions. Preoperative analysis using CBCT may be beneficial for establishing the treatment plan.

Abstract
Surgical interventions in the anterior region of the human mandible are associated with many complications. Some anatomical structures like the median perforating canal were discovered in mammals. Such canals may be a cause of concern that needs attention in human mandible. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence, location, and course of median perforating canal and its associated extensions in the anterior segment of the human mandible in cone beam computed tomography scans (CBCT). Data were collected from 160 CBCT scans, and evaluated. The incidence was 23.75% for median perforating canal with wide anatomical variations concerning the related lingual and labial extensions. Median perforating canal and their associated lingual and labial foramina are frequently seen in human mandible. A thorough investigation of the symphyseal region using CBCT must be taken into account when targeting surgical intervention in this area.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to quantify the cortical and cancellous bone in the mandibular symphysis and relate it to the teeth and to the skeletal class. A descriptive study was conducted using cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). Class I and class III subjects were included, defined according to dental occlusion and cephalogram results. Linear measurements were taken on the CBCT of the mandibular canines, lateral incisors, and central incisors, where the analysis was related to the axial and apical axes considering the bone in relation to the dental area. With previous definitions, an observer took 2 measurements of the height of the mandibular symphysis, cortical bone of the buccal and lower region, and thickness of cancellous bone at different levels; the correlation coefficient between the first and second measurement was 0.99 and presented P = .001. The results were analyzed with analysis of variance and Tukey's honest significant difference test, with P < .05 being statistically significant. The symphysis height was significantly greater in class III subjects. The cortical bone was an average 1.67 ± 0.44 mm in vertical distance in the skeletal class I group and 1.74 ± 0.47 mm in the class III group. The cancellous bone had an average width of 5.03 ± 1.94 mm in the skeletal class I group and 4.74 ± 2.05 mm in the class III group. It was observed that cancellous bone was significantly thicker at the incisor level than at the canine level. There were anatomical differences between skeletal class I and class III subjects, although the clinical significance may be questionable. With the values from these analyses, it may be concluded that there are no significant differences in quantitation of the cortical and cancellous bone in the anterior mandibular symphysis.
