Abstract
This study investigated the effect of different concentrations of ferulic acid (FA) on the quality of goat semen preserved at 17 °C. First, semen was collected from three black-headed goat bucks using an artificial vagina. Then, the mixed semen was diluted with basal dilutions containing different concentrations of FA (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 μmol/L) and stored at 17 °C. Sperm total motility, plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were measured during semen storage. The results showed that sperm total motility, plasma membrane integrity, and acrosome integrity were significantly improved in the 50 μmol/L FA group compared with the control group (0 μmol/L) on days 1-5, and the level of T-AOC significantly increased, while the contents of ROS and MDA significantly reduced. Meanwhile, the goats' conception rate showed that supplementing semen with 50 μmol/L FA preserved at 17 °C for 3 days had no significant effect on fertility. Taken together, our findings suggest that adding 50 μmol/L FA in dilution at 17 °C can improve goat bucks' semen quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to lower antioxidant capacity and higher amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, ram spermatozoa are very susceptible during cooling process. OBJECTIVES The objective was to examine the effect of the trans-ferulic acid (t-FA) on the ram semen during liquid preservation. METHODS Semen samples were collected from the Qezel rams, pooled, and extended with the Tris-based diluent. Pooled samples enriched with different amounts of the t-FA (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 25 mM) and preserved at 4°C for 72 h. Spermatozoa's kinematics, membrane functionality, and viability were assessed by CASA system, hypoosmotic swelling test, and eosin-nigrosin staining, respectively. Moreover, biochemical parameters were measured at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h. RESULTS Results showed that 5 and 10 mM t-FA improved forward progressive motility (FPM) and curvilinear velocity compared to the other groups at 72 h (p < 0.05). Samples treated with 25 mM t-FA showed the lowest total motility, FPM, and viability at 24, 48, and 72 h of storage (p < 0.05). Higher total antioxidant activity levels were observed in the 10 mM t-FA-treated group compared to the negative control at 72 h (p < 0.05). Treatment with 25 mM t-FA increased malondialdehyde amounts and decreased superoxide dismutase activity compared to other groups at the final time assessment (p < 0.05). Nitrate-nitrite and lipid hydroperoxides values were not affected by treatment. CONCLUSIONS The current study indicates the positive and negative influences of different concentrations of t-FA on the ram semen upon cold storage.

Abstract
Objective Phenolic acids are well-known phytochemicals that are detected in a wide variety of medicinal plants, and their antiproliferative effects on cancer cells are known, but their mechanisms are poorly revealed. In most of cancer cells, telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is a dominant factor of telomere length regulation. The hTERT expression promotes invasiveness in tumor cells and is a hallmark of cancer. Therefore, in this study, the probable inhibitory effects of caffeic (Caf), coumaric (Cum), and ferulic acids (Fer) are investigated on the hTERT expression pattern in HepG2 cells. Methods The MTT, apoptosis assays, and real-time PCR analysis were applied to evaluate viability, cytotoxicity, and hTERT gene expression level, respectively. Results All of the studied phenolic acids showed cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells in a timely manner and presented a time-dependent inhibitory effect on the growth of HepG2 cells. They reduced percentage of viable cells and induced apoptosis. Also, these phenolic acids had significant inhibitory effects on hTERT gene expression. Conclusion These findings suggest that cell viability along with hTERT gene expression in HepG2 cells could be reduced by Cum, Caf, and Fer. As different cancer cells are resistant to conventional chemotherapeutics, this type of results proposes the telomerase as a proper target of cancer therapy development by natural products.

Abstract
The demand of foods with high antioxidant capacity have increased and research on these foods continues to grow. This review is focused on chlorogenic acids (CGAs) from green coffee, which is the most abundant source. The main CGA in coffee is 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA). Coffee extracts are currently the most widely used source to enhance the antioxidant activity of foods. Due to the solubility of CGAs, their extraction is mainly performed with organic solvents. CGAs have been associated with health benefits, such as antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activity, and others that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the biological activities depend on the stability of CGAs, which are sensitive to pH, temperature, and light. The anti-inflammatory activity of 5-CQA is attributed to reducing the proinflammatory activity of cytokines. 5-CQA can negatively affect colon microbiota. An increase in anthocyanins and antioxidant activity was observed when CGAs extracts were added to different food matrices such as dairy products, coffee drinks, chocolate, and bakery products. The fortification of foods with coffee CGAs has the potential to improve the functionality of foods.

Abstract
Current study was designed to evaluate the effects of β-cyfluthrin, as a toxicant substance, and trans-ferulic acid (trans-FA), as a protective agent, on different parameters of rooster semen upon liquid storage. For this purpose, semen samples of roosters (Ross 308, n = 10, 32-wk-old) were collected twice a week. Good quality samples (≥70% progressive motion) were diluted, pooled and then divided for the purposes of the study. In the first experiment, motility of spermatozoa was evaluated following exposure to different concentrations of β-cyfluthrin (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 µM) at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. In the second experiment, constant doses of β-cyfluthrin (10 µM) alone or in combination with trans-FA (10, 25 mM) were assessed on motility and viability of spermatozoa at 0, 24, and 48 h time points. Moreover, amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total nitrate-nitrite, total hydroperoxide (HPO), and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were evaluated in the homogenate of spermatozoa-diluent at studied time points. Results of the first experiment showed that amounts of β-cyfluthrin greater than 5 µM, significantly reduced the motility of spermatozoa at 24 and 48 h of storage (P < 0.05). The second experiment demonstrated that, trans-FA especially at 10, 25 mM doses restored the motility and viability of spermatozoa compared to β-cyfluthrin treated group (P < 0.05). Amounts of MDA (10, 25 mM), hydroperoxide (10, 25, and 50 mM), and nitrate-nitrite (10, 25, and 50 mM) were lower and TAC (10 and 25 mM) were greater in trans-FA + β-cyfluthrin treated groups compared to β-cyfluthrin alone treated samples (P < 0.05). However, activity of SOD did not show significant changes by the treatment (P > 0.05). It seems that trans-FA could ameliorate toxic effect of β-cyfluthrin via reduction of peroxidative (as evident by measurement of MDA) and nitrosative (as evident by measurement of nitrate-nitrite) reactions over cold preservation of rooster semen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol widely distributed in plants and plant-derived food with antioxidant and protective activities against cell stress. Caenorhabditis elegans is a model organism particularly useful for understanding the molecular and biochemical mechanisms associated with aging and stress in mammals. In C. elegans, CGA was shown to improve resistance to thermal, while the underlying mechanisms that lead to this effect require further understanding. PURPOSE The present study was conducted to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms behind CGA response conferring thermotolerance to C. elegans. METHODS AND RESULTS Signaling pathways that could be involved in the CGA-induced thermotolerance were evaluated in C. elegans strains with loss-of-function mutation. CGA-induced thermotolerance required hypoxia-inducible factor HIF-1 but no insulin pathway. CGA exposition (1.4 µM CGA for 18 h) before thermal stress treatment increased HIF-1 levels and activity. HIF-1 activation could be partly attributed to an increase in radical oxygen species and a decrease in superoxide dismutase activity. In addition, CGA exposition before thermal stress also increased autophagy just as hormetic heat condition (HHC), worms incubated at 36 °C for 1 h. RNAi experiments evidenced that autophagy was increased by CGA via HIF-1, heat-shock transcription factor HSF-1 and heat-shock protein HSP-16 and HSP-70. In contrast, autophagy induced by HHC only required HSF-1 and HSP-70. Moreover, suppression of autophagy induction showed the significance of this process for adapting C. elegans to cope with thermal stress. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that CGA-induced thermotolerance in C. elegans is mediated by HIF-1 and downstream, by HSF-1, HSPs and autophagy resembling HHC.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) is a health-threatening process that is involved, at least partially, in the development of several diseases. Although antioxidants can be used as a chemical defense against OS, they might also exhibit pro-oxidant effects, depending on environmental conditions. In this work, such a dual behavior was investigated for phenolic compounds (PhCs) within the framework of the density functional theory and based on kinetic data. Multiple reaction mechanisms were considered in both cases. The presence of redox metals, the pH, and the possibility that PhCs might be transformed into benzoquinones were identified as key aspects in the antioxidant versus pro-oxidant effects of these compounds. The main virtues of PhCs as antioxidants are their radical trapping activity, their regeneration under physiological conditions, and their behavior as OH-inactivating ligands. The main risks of PhCs as pro-oxidants are predicted to be the role of phenolate ions in the reduction of metal ions, which can promote Fenton-like reactions, and the formation of benzoquinones that might cause protein arylation at cysteine sites. Although the benefits seem to overcome the hazards, to properly design chemical strategies against OS using PhCs, it is highly recommended to carefully explore their duality in this context.

Abstract
Perfusion of hearts with extracts of Ilex paraguariensis (IP/mate) appears to reduce ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. To determine if oral consumption of IP/mate can provide similar cardioprotection, short-term consumption was investigated alone or in association with exercise in rats. Animals were grouped into control (C), IP/mate consumption (M), exercise (E), and exercise with mate (E+M). M and E+M groups consumed IP/mate (1 g·kg-1 body weight in 1 mL water) by gavage. E and E+M groups swam 7× per week for 30 min carrying an additional 5% of body weight. After 1 week, hearts were tested ex vivo to measure left ventricle developed pressure (LVDP), systolic and end diastolic pressure (LVSP/LVEDP), maximum velocity of contraction and relaxation (dP/dt+ and dP/dt-) during I/R and infarction size. In addition, cardiac tissue was analyzed for oxidative stress by lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl levels along with activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). LVDP was higher in hearts from M and E groups as well as decreased infarction sizes than others. At the end of reperfusion, dP/dt+ was increased in E and M and dP/dt- was higher in M. LVSP was higher in M and E compared with C. Protein carbonyl and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances levels were higher in M while SOD activity was increased in E. No differences were observed in other activities. The results suggest that short-term consumption of IP/mate has protective effects on heart I/R injury similar to exercise, but the combination of these interventions appears to contradict the beneficial adaptations from exercise.
