Abstract
N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) is a universally used industrial material with exponential growth in production and consumption worldwide. The frequently reported occupational DMF poisoning cases in some countries and the gradually recognized unavoidable health risks to the general population highlight that DMF should still be a matter of concern. Previous studies have demonstrated that the liver is the primary target organ of DMF exposure and multiple mechanisms have been revealed. However, most of these studies investigate the detrimental effects of acute and subacute DMF exposure, while the effects of chronic DMF exposure are rarely studied. Furthermore, the key mechanism for the acute hepatotoxicity of DMF remains to be elucidated. Future research may focus on the identification of efficient preventive measures against the toxicity of DMF to occupational workers, the investigation of the detrimental effects of DMF at environmentally relevant doses, and the studies on the elimination and recycling of DMF in industrial wastes. Herein, we present an updated review of the metabolism of DMF, the biomarker of DMF exposure, underlying molecular mechanisms of DMF-induced hepatotoxicity, and the toxicity of DMF to both occupational workers and general populations and discuss the possible directions in future studies.

Abstract
The current surgical adjunctive for vitreoretinal surgeries fails to provide an adequate 3D structure for cellular regeneration. A one-pot synthesis of gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA) followed by modification with 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (4-CPBA) was performed to fabricate 4-CPBA-modified GelMA (4CPBA@GelMA), a gelatin-based hydrogel. 4CPBA@GelMA was photo-cross-linked by 405 nm violet light and examined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and rheometry. In vitro biocompatibility was examined by Müller cell proliferation assays exposed to 4CPBA@GelMA and violet light. In vivo retinal biocompatibility was evaluated by electroretinography of rat eyes that were exposed to intravitreally injected and photo-cross-linked 4CPBA@GelMA at days 3, 7, 14, and 28 post-injection. Following electroretinography, histology and immunohistochemistry were performed on the retinas. The NMR results indicated amidation of GelMA by 4-CPBA, and FTIR confirmed the presence of the CPBA ring in 4CPBA@GelMA samples. SEM revealed that 4CPBA@GelMA had significantly larger pores than GelMA (56.9 ± 9.5 vs 35.1 ± 2.8 μm; P < 0.001). Rheological findings showed that, unlike GelMA and gelatin, 4CPBA@GelMA has Newtonian fluid properties at room temperature. Exposure to 4CPBA@GelMA did not significantly affect Müller cell viability in a proliferation assay; moreover, electroretinography findings indicated normal waveforms and implicit times, and histology and immunohistochemistry examinations revealed no significant changes. In this study, we established the high retinal compatibility of 4CPBA@GelMA. The low viscosity of 4CPBA@GelMA is ideal for injection via small-gauge needles, and the larger pore size and three-dimensional network both potentiate cellular migration and growth. These features made 4CPBA@GelMA a candidate for vitreoretinal surgical adjunctive that might promote retinal regeneration.

Abstract
Polycaprolactone (PCL) micro- and nanoparticles produced using the electrospraying technique present high drug encapsulation capacity, a controllable surface area, and a good cost-benefit ratio. PCL is also considered a non-toxic polymeric material with excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. All these characteristics make PCL micro- and nanoparticles a promising material for tissue engineering regeneration, drug delivery, and surface modification in dentistry. In this study, PCL electrosprayed specimens were produced and analyzed to determine their morphology and size. Three PCL concentrations (2, 4, and 6 wt%) and three solvent types (chloroform (CF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and acetic acid (AA)) with various solvent mixtures ratios (1:1 CF/DMF, 3:1 CF/DMF, 100% CF, 1:1 AA/CF, 3:1 AA/CF, and 100% AA) were used while keeping the remaining electrospray parameters constant. SEM images followed by ImageJ analysis showed a change in the morphology and size of the particles among various tested groups. A two-way ANOVA demonstrated a statistically significant interaction (p < 0.001) between PCL concentration and solvents on the size of the particles. With the increase in the PCL concentration, an increase in the number of fibers was observed among all the groups. The morphology and dimensions of the electrosprayed particles, as well as the presence of fibers, were significantly dependent on the PCL concentration, choice of solvent, and solvent ratio.

Abstract
New protocol for screening efficient and environmentally friendly solvents was proposed and experimentally verified. The guidance for solvent selection comes from computed solubility via COSMO-RS approach. Furthermore, solute-solvent affinities computed using advanced quantum chemistry level were used as a rationale for observed solvents ranking. The screening protocol pointed out that 4-formylomorpholine (4FM) is an attractive solubilizer compared to commonly used aprotic solvents such as DMSO and DMF. This was tested experimentally by measuring the solubility of the title compounds in aqueous binary mixtures in the temperature range between 298.15 K and 313.15 K. Additional measurements were also performed for aqueous binary mixtures of DMSO and DMF. It has been found that the solubility of studied aromatic amides is very high and quite similar in all three aprotic solvents. For most aqueous binary mixtures, a significant decrease in solubility with a decrease in the organic fraction is observed, indicating that all systems can be regarded as efficient solvent-anti-solvent pairs. In the case of salicylamide dissolved in aqueous-4FM binary mixtures, a strong synergistic effect has been found leading to the highest solubility for 0.6 mole fraction of 4-FM.

Abstract
N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), a widely used solvent in the chemical industry, is known to induce toxic hepatitis. However, there have been no reported cases of DMF-associated autoimmune hepatitis. A 31-year-old healthy man working at a glove factory since July 2015 had intermittently put his bare hands into a diluted DMF solution for his first 15 days at work. After 2 months, he felt nausea, fatigue, and hand cramping, and a jaundice followed. His laboratory findings showed positive autoantibodies and elevated immunoglobulin G (IgG), and his liver biopsy pathology was typical of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Prednisolone and azathioprine therapy began, and he recovered rapidly without adverse events. Though his liver chemistry was normalized, the IgG level remained persistently upper normal range. His 2nd liver biopsy performed in April 2019 showed mild portal activity, and he was well under a low dose immunosuppressive therapy up to April 2020. This case warns of the hazard of occupational exposure to DMF, and clinicians should be aware of DMF-related AIH for timely initiation of immunosuppressive therapy.

Abstract
In acute aortic dissection (AD) in pregnancy, increased cardiovascular stress due to pregnancy is an important factor leading to an emergent aortic event. It is rare but often results in a devastating event for both the pregnant patient and the foetus. Two cases of acute AD (Stanford type A) in pregnant females are presented in the present study. The patients were diagnosed via echocardiography, and the diagnosis was confirmed with computed tomography angiography prior to aortic surgery. Up to 50% of ADs in pregnancy occur in patients with fibrillin-1 (FBN1) gene mutations. The FBN1 gene was sequenced in both patients, and notable, novel pathogenic mutations of FBN1 were identified in both patients. A literature review was also performed on available diagnostic imaging and other measurements regarding AD during pregnancy. The authors suggest that the relevant content may have important clinical implications in raising disease awareness, arranging test rationally and choosing an intervention method.
