A naked-eye visible aluminium (III)-based complex fluorescence sensor for sensitive detection of mesotrione

Mesotrione, which is a kind of herbicide to control broad-leaved weeds, has been increasingly used due to its excellent selectivity, rapid process and low toxicity. However, the excessive application of mesotrione have led to widespread contamination. Herein, a turn-on competitive coordination-based fluorescent probe, 2-hydroxy-1-(9-purin)-methylidenehydrazinenaphthalene (HPM), has been successfully synthesized. HPM could effectively detect Al3+ in CH3OH/HEPES (1/9, v/v) with low limit of detection (LOD) being 0.2 µM via coordination. HPM also exhibited excellent imaging capabilities for Al3+ in living cells with low cytotoxicity. On the basis of the competitive coordination of HPM with Al3+, the [HPM-Al3+] complex could also serve as a potential fluorescence sensor for detecting mesotrione with the LOD of 0.2 µM. Furthermore, [HPM-Al3+] complex was applied for the detection of mesotrione in real samples and test paper. Finally, the mechanism of [HPM-Al3+] for sensing mesotrione was investigated deeply as well. This work designed a new convenient method for on-site detection of mesotrione without the large-scale equipment or complicated pre-treatment.

Multifunctional fluorescence sensor as a potential theranostic agent against Alzheimer's disease

Metal ions play an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Metal dyshomeostasis, β-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation and oxidative stress, etc. are related to metal ions. So, metal therapeutics has aroused increasingly more attention, especially the research of metal-involved theranostic agents. In this work, a highly selective and sensitive multifunctional fluorescence sensor 1 with a naphthol unit based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and excited state proton transfer (ESPT) mechanism was synthesized, and its synergistic biological effects on regulating metal dyshomeostasis, modulating Aβ accumulation and scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated. The results demonstrated that 1 exhibited significant fluorescence enhancement towards Al³⁺ (the limit was as low as 0.01 ppm), superior chelating abilities with metal ions, even better modulation effect of Cu²⁺-induced Aβ_1-42 accumulation than curcumin, good elimination effect of ROS, clear fluorescence image in living cells, low cytotoxic and appropriate blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Overall, these findings revealed that 1 could be used as a potential theranostic agent against AD for further research.

Characterization of a Hg2+-Selective Fluorescent Probe Based on Rhodamine B and Its Imaging in Living Cells

A small organic molecule P was synthesized and characterized as a fluorometric and colorimetric dual-modal probe for Hg2+. The sensing characteristics of the proposed probe for Hg2+ were studied in detail. A fluorescent enhancing property at 583 nm (>30 fold) accompanied with a visible colorimetric change, from colorless to pink, was observed with the addition of Hg2+ to P in an ethanol-water solution (8:2, v/v, 20 mM HEPES, pH 7.0), which would be helpful to fabricate Hg2+-selective probes with "naked-eye" and fluorescent detection. Meanwhile, cellular experimental results demonstrated its low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, and the application of P for imaging of Hg2+ in living cells was satisfactory.

A pH tuning single fluorescent probe based on naphthalene for dual-analytes (Mg2+ and Al3+) and its application in cell imaging

In this study, a naphthalene Schiff-base P which serves as a dual-analyte probe for the quantitative detection of Al3+ and Mg2+ has been designed. The proposed probe showed an ''off-on'' fluorescent response toward Al3+ in ethanol-water solution (1 : 9, v/v, pH 6.3, 20 mM HEPES) over other metal ions and anions, while the detection by the probe could be switched to Mg2+ by regulating the pH from 6.3 to 9.4. The sensing mechanisms of P to Al3+/Mg2+ are attributed to inhibition of the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process by the formation of 1 : 1 ligand-metal complexes. More importantly, the probe was applied successfully in living cells for the fluorescent cell-imaging of Al3+ and Mg2+.

A new fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for Al3+ and F−/CN− based on a julolidine unit and its bioimaging in living cells

A novel multifunctional chemosensor HL bearing a julolidine unit and a Schiff base unit has been synthesized. As a fluorescent sensor, HL exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity to Al³⁺ and F⁻/CN⁻ with a low detection limit in acetonitrile. Moreover, HL also showed good colorimetric selectivity to F⁻/CN⁻; a solution color change from colorless to light yellow in acetonitrile was observed by the ‘naked-eye’. The properties of HL with Al³⁺ and F⁻/CN⁻ were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and ¹H NMR titration. Furthermore, the cell imaging experimental results indicated that the chemosensor HL could be applied for the detection of Al³⁺ in living cells.
