The effect of a probiotic blend on gastrointestinal symptoms in constipated patients: a double blind, randomised, placebo controlled 2-week trial

Nocebo effects and influencing factors in the randomized clinical trials of chronic constipation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Nocebo effects are unavoidable in randomized clinical trials. We aimed to assess the magnitude of nocebo effects and explore the influencing factors in chronic constipation.

METHODS

We searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases up to July 2022. Randomized, placebo-controlled trials investigating interventions in chronic constipation were included. We conducted a random effects meta-analysis of the proportion of adverse events (AEs) in placebo-treated participants and evaluated the effect of trial characteristics on nocebo effects.

KEY RESULTS

We identified 20,204 studies from the databases, of which 61 were included in the final analysis. The pooled placebo AE rate was 30.41%, and AE-related withdrawal rate was 1.53%. The most commonly reported AEs were headache (5.67%), diarrhea (4.45%), abdominal pain (3.98%), nasopharyngitis (3.39%), nausea (3.36%), and flatulence (2.95%). The placebo AE rate was lower in trials conducted in Asia compared to those in Europe, North America, and international trials. It was also lower in trials diagnosed by Rome III compared to clinician's opinion and Rome II. Additionally, the placebo AE rate was lower in single-center trials compared to multicenter trials, lower in 5-8 weeks therapy compared to 9-12 weeks therapy, lower in participants with FC compared to those with IBS-C and CC, lower in trials with 2 arms compared to 3 arms, and higher in trials with prokinetic drugs compared to secretagogues and laxatives.

CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES

The placebo AE rate was 30.41% in patients with chronic constipation. Based on our findings, we recommend that researchers take the nocebo effects into consideration when designing and conducting clinical trials and adopt specific measures to mitigate the negative influence of nocebo effects.

Evidence of the Beneficial Impact of Three Probiotic-Based Food Supplements on the Composition and Metabolic Activity of the Intestinal Microbiota in Healthy Individuals: An Ex Vivo Study

Scientific evidence has increasingly supported the beneficial effects of probiotic-based food supplements on human intestinal health. This ex vivo study investigated the effects on the composition and metabolic activity of the intestinal microbiota of three probiotic-based food supplements, containing, respectively, (1) Bifidobacterium longum ES1, (2) Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®, and (3) a combination of L. acidophilus NCFM®, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37™, Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07™, and Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04™. This study employed fecal samples from six healthy donors, inoculated in a Colon-on-a-plate® system. After 48 h of exposure or non-exposure to the food supplements, the effects were measured on the overall microbial fermentation (pH), changes in microbial metabolic activity through the production of short-chain and branched-chain fatty acids (SCFAs and BCFAs), ammonium, lactate, and microbial composition. The strongest effect on the fermentation process was observed for the combined formulation probiotics, characterized by the significant stimulation of butyrate production, a significant reduction in BCFAs and ammonium in all donors, and a significant stimulatory effect on bifidobacteria and lactobacilli growth. Our findings suggest that the combined formulation probiotics significantly impact the intestinal microbiome of the healthy individuals, showing changes in metabolic activity and microbial abundance as the health benefit endpoint.

Lactic acid bacteria in relieving constipation: mechanism, clinical application, challenge, and opportunity

Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal symptom that can considerably affect a patients' quality of life. Although several drugs have been used to treat constipation, they are associated with high costs, side effects, and low universality. Therefore, alternative intervention strategies are urgently needed. Traditional lactic acid bacteria (LAB), such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, play a vital role in regulating intestinal microecology and have demonstrated favorable effects in constipation; however, a comprehensive review of their constipation relief mechanisms is limited. This review summarizes the pathogenesis of constipation and the relationship between intestinal motility and gut microbiota, elucidates the possible mechanism by which LAB alleviates of constipation through a systematic summary of animal and clinical research, and highlights the challenges and applications of LAB in the treatment of constipation. Our review can improve our understanding of constipation, and advance targeted microecological therapeutic agents, such as LAB.

The Effect of Delivery Matrix on Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 Survival through In Vitro Human Digestion

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 is a probiotic with several documented human health benefits. Interest in probiotics has led to the development of new formats that probiotics, including HN019, can be supplemented into. In this study, we looked at common HN019 formats such as frozen culture and freeze-dried powder as well as supplementing it into the following food matrices: yogurts (dairy, soy, and oat based), xanthan gum-based tablets, pulpless orange juice, whey sports drink, and dark chocolate (70% cocoa). In this work, our aim was to investigate whether the food matrix that carried HN019 via simulated human digestion (a dual model system mimicking both upper and lower gastrointestinal digestion) influenced probiotic delivery. To that end, we validated and used a real-time qPCR assay to detect HN019 after simulated digestion. In addition, we also measured the effect on a panel of metabolites. After simulated digestion, we were able to detect HN019 from all the matrices tested, and the observed changes to the metabolite profile were consistent with those expected from the food matrix used. In conclusion, this work suggests that the food matrix supplemented with HN019 did not interfere with delivery to the colon via simulated human digestion.

Effect of the probiotic strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P9, on chronic constipation: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Chronic constipation (CC) is a common gastrointestinal condition associated with intestinal inflammation, and the condition considerably impairs patients' quality of life. We conducted a large-scale 42-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effect of probiotics in alleviating CC. 163 patients diagnosed with CC (following Rome IV criteria) were randomly divided into probiotic (n = 78; received Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P9 [P9]; 1×10¹¹ CFU/day) and placebo (n = 85; received placebo material) groups. Ingesting P9 significantly improved the weekly mean frequency of complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBMs) and spontaneous bowel movements (SBMs), while significantly reducing the level of worries and concerns (WO; P < 0.05). Comparing with the placebo group, P9 group was significantly enriched in potentially beneficial bacteria (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Ruminococcus_B gnavus), while depriving of several bacterial and phage taxa (Oscillospiraceae sp., Lachnospiraceae sp., and Herelleviridae; P < 0.05). Interesting significant correlations were also observed between some clinical parameters and subjects' gut microbiome, including: negative correlation between Oscillospiraceae sp. and SBMs; positive correlation between WO and Oscillospiraceae sp., Lachnospiraceae sp. Additionally, P9 group had significantly (P < 0.05) more predicted gut microbial bioactive potential involved in the metabolism of amino acids (L-asparagine, L-pipecolinic), short-/medium-chain fatty acids (valeric acid and caprylic acid). Furthermore, several metabolites (p-cresol, methylamine, trimethylamine) related to the intestinal barrier and transit decreased significantly after P9 administration (P < 0.05). In short, the constipation relief effect of P9 intervention was accompanied by desirable changes in the fecal metagenome and metabolome. Our findings support the notion of applying probiotics in managing CC.

Probiotics and synbiotics in chronic constipation in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Probiotics and synbiotics have been increasingly investigated for the management of chronic constipation. We aimed to investigate the effect of probiotics and synbiotics on stool output, gut transit time, symptoms and quality of life in adults with chronic constipation via a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

METHODS

Studies were identified using electronic databases, backward citation and hand-searching abstracts. The search date was 10 July 2022. RCTs reporting administration of probiotics or synbiotics in adults with chronic constipation were included. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed with the Cochrane RoB 2.0 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted separately for probiotics and synbiotics. Results were synthesized using risk ratios (RRs), mean differences or standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using a random-effects model.

RESULTS

Thirty RCTs investigating probiotics and four RCTs investigating synbiotics were included. Overall, 369/647 (57%) responded to probiotic treatment and 252/567 (44%) to control (RR 1.28, 95% CI 1.07, 1.52, p = 0.007). Probiotics increased stool frequency (SMD 0.71, 95% CI 0.37, 1.04, p < 0.00001), with Bifidobacterium lactis having a significant effect, but not mixtures of probiotics, Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 or Lactobacillus casei Shirota. Probiotics did not impact stool consistency (SMD 0.26, 95% CI -0.03, 0.54, p = 0.08). Probiotics improved integrative symptom scores compared to control (SMD -0.46, 95% CI -0.89, -0.04). Synbiotics did not impact stool output or integrative symptom scores compared to control.

CONCLUSIONS

Certain probiotics may improve response to treatment, stool frequency and integrative constipation symptoms, providing cautious optimism for their use as a dietary management option. There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend synbiotics in the management of chronic constipation. Caution is needed when interpreting these results due to high heterogeneity and risk of bias amongst the studies.

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bi-07 supports lactose digestion in vitro and in randomized, placebo- and lactase-controlled clinical trials

BACKGROUND

Probiotics may alleviate lactose maldigestion.

OBJECTIVES

The objective was to select a probiotic with high lactase activity and compare it with lactase and placebo in clinical trials.

METHODS

Bacterial cultures were screened for lactase activity in a model of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bi-07 (Bi-07) counts were adjusted in subsequent experiments to correspond to 4500 Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) units of lactase, the amount in the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)-approved health claim. Two crossover clinical trials, Booster Alpha and Booster Omega, were performed in participants with lactose intolerance, where 2 × 1012 CFUs Bi-07, 4662 FCC lactase, or placebo was consumed simultaneously with a lactose challenge, with 1-wk washouts between challenges. The trial designs were identical except for the source of lactose. Breath hydrogen concentration (BHC) was measured to assess the effect of the investigational products on lactose digestion, for which incremental area under the curve (iAUC) was the primary outcome. Peak BHC, cumulative BHC, and GI symptoms were secondary outcomes.

RESULTS

Bi-07 was superior to placebo in reducing BHC [iAUC, parts per million (ppm) ∙ h] in both trials (Booster Alpha: geometric least square mean ratio: 0.462; 95% CI: 0.249, 0.859; P = 0.016; Booster Omega: 0.227; 95% CI: 0.095, 0.543; P = 0.001). Lactase was superior to placebo in Booster Alpha (0.190; 95% CI: 0.102, 0.365; P < 0.001) but not Booster Omega (0.493; 95% CI: 0.210, 1.156; P = 0.102). Noninferiority of Bi-07 compared with lactase was observed in Booster Omega (0.460; 95% CI: 0.193, 1.096; P = 0.079; CI upper limit < 1.25 noninferiority margin). Odds of abdominal pain (compared with placebo: 0.32, P = 0.036) and flatulence (compared with placebo: 0.25, P = 0.007) were lower with lactase in Booster Alpha. Increased odds of nausea were seen with Bi-07 (compared with placebo: 4.0, P = 0.005) in Booster Omega.

CONCLUSIONS

Bi-07 has high lactase activity, and in 2 clinical trials, it supported lactose digestion in individuals with lactose intolerance.These trials were registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03659747 (Booster Alpha) and NCT03814668 (Booster Omega).

Bifidobacterium longum relieves constipation by regulating the intestinal barrier of mice

Constipation is a major health concern worldwide, requiring effective and safe treatment options. This study mainly focused on three species and nine strains of bifidobacteria from different sources to study their abilities to relieve constipation induced by loperamide in BALB/C mice. By monitoring constipation-related indicators, it was found that only Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) relieved constipation, which indicated that bifidobacteria had inter-species differences in relieving constipation. Furthermore, through the detection of biological, chemical, mechanical, and immune barriers in mice, it was discovered that B. longum upregulates the relative abundance of 22 genera that were positively related to faecal water content, small intestinal propulsion rate, acetate, propionate, and intestinal mechanical barrier and negatively correlated with inflammatory factors, AQP8 and the time of first black stool and downregulates the relative abundance of Akkermansia. Furthermore, it increased the level of acetate in faeces and reduced the expression of AQP8 in the colon. This enhances intestinal motility and improves water and electrolyte metabolism. Meanwhile, it inhibited inflammation and prevented loperamide-induced intestinal barrier damage in constipated mice by upregulating occludin and downregulating IL-1β and TNF-α. In summary, B. longum relieved constipation by regulating the intestinal barrier in constipated mice.

An Open-label, Multicenter Study to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of a Novel Probiotic Blend in Patients With Functional Gastrointestinal Symptoms

GOAL

A novel 5-strain (Bl-04, Bi-07, HN019, NCFM, and Lpc-37) probiotic blend was developed and its safety and efficacy were evaluated in patients with functional gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.

BACKGROUND

These strains administered together have not previously been investigated.

STUDY

Patients aged 18 to 75 years with functional GI symptoms were eligible for inclusion in a single-arm, open-label, multicenter study (NCT04155801). An oral capsule containing the novel probiotic blend was administered once daily for 30 days. The primary efficacy endpoint was patient-reported improvement in overall GI well-being at day 30. Secondary efficacy endpoints included changes in GI symptoms assessed using the GI Health Symptom Questionnaire. Incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events was recorded at all visits.

RESULTS

Of 188 enrolled patients, 72.3% were female and mean (SD) age was 44.1 (13.4) years. At day 30, 85.1% of patients achieved the primary endpoint, a positive response signifying improvement in overall GI well-being. Improvements from baseline were reported at day 30 in diarrhea frequency (baseline frequency≥3 to 4 d/wk) and severity (baseline severity≥5/10) for 75.8% and 87.3% of patients, respectively. Over the same time period, constipation frequency (baseline frequency≥3 to 4 d/wk) and severity (baseline severity≥5/10) improved in 73.6% and 80.4% of patients, respectively. Most patients reported improvements at day 30 in frequency and severity of straining, urgency, abdominal pain/discomfort, bloating, and distention. Improvements reported at day 30 were generally observable at day 14. No safety signals were identified.

CONCLUSION

A novel 5-strain probiotic blend improved functional GI symptoms and was safe.

Probiotics and Phytochemicals: Role on Gut Microbiota and Efficacy on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Dyspepsia, and Functional Constipation

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, and functional dyspepsia, have had a high prevalence over the past few years. Recent evidence suggests that functional foods and bioactive compounds, such as probiotics and phytochemicals, may have a positive effect in treating the symptoms of the above diseases. In this systematic review study, 32 published studies were selected with the use of comprehensive scientific databases, according to PRISMA guidelines, with emphasis on recent interventional studies that reflect the effect of probiotics and selected phytochemicals on the improvement of FGID symptoms. The bioactive compounds in the selected studies were administered to patients either in capsule form or in enriched food products (yogurt, juice, etc.). According to the results, there is a correlation between the consumption of probiotics and phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, and the relief of symptoms in selected gastrointestinal disorders. Enriching foods that are regularly consumed by the population, such as fruit juices, yogurt, and cheese, with ingredients that may have a positive effect on gastrointestinal disorders, could be a possible novel goal for the management of these diseases. However, further evidence is required for the role of probiotics and phytochemicals in FGIDs to be fully understood.

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 Effects on Gut Health: A Review

Optimal gut motility is central to bowel function and gut health. The link between the gut dysmotility related disorders and dysfunctional-intestinal barriers has led to a hypothesis that certain probiotics could help in normalizing gut motility and maintain gut health. This review investigates the roles of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 (B. lactis HN019™) on gut health, and its mechanisms of action in various pre-clinical and clinical studies. Research supports the hypothesis that B. lactis HN019™ has a beneficial role in maintaining intestinal barrier function during gastrointestinal infections by competing and excluding potential pathogens via different mechanisms; maintaining normal tight junction function in vitro; and regulating host immune defense toward pathogens in both in vitro and human studies. This has been observed to lead to reduced incidence of diarrhea. Interestingly, B. lactis HN019™ also supports normal physiological function in immunosenescent elderly and competes and excludes potential pathogens. Furthermore, B. lactis HN019™ reduced intestinal transit time and increased bowel movement frequency in functional constipation, potentially by modulating gut–brain–microbiota axis, mainly via serotonin signaling pathway, through short chain fatty acids derived from microbial fermentation. B. lactis HN019™ is thus a probiotic that can contribute to relieving gut dysmotility related disorders.

Role of gut microbiota in functional constipation

Functional constipation (FC) is common, yet the etiology is not clear. Accumulating evidence suggests an association between FC and abnormal gut microbiota. The relationship between the gut microbiota and the gut transit is likely bidirectional. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding the impact of gut microbiota on the pathogenesis of FC. By modulating the colonic motility, secretion, and absorption, gut microbiota may contribute to the development of FC through microbial metabolic activities involving bile acids, short-chain fatty acids, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and methane. In support of the key roles of the gut microbiota in FC, treatment with probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and traditional Chinese medicine often result in compositional and functional changes in the gut microbiota. Further studies on the pathogenesis of FC and the therapeutic mechanism of microecological agents will provide a knowledge base for better management of FC.

Different Bifidobacterium bifidum strains change the intestinal flora composition of mice via different mechanisms to alleviate loperamide-induced constipation

Constipation is a condition with a high prevalence rate worldwide and may occur in men and women of any age. Bifidobacterium bifidum has been shown to have a relieving effect on constipation, but the underlying mechanism is still unknown. This study explored the effects of gavage of three strains of B. bifidum (CCFM668, FHNFQ25M12 and FXJCJ32M2) from different sources in mice with loperamide-induced constipation. After 38 days of intervention, B. bifidum CCFM668, FHNFQ25M12 and FXJCJ32M2 showed the ability to modify the levels of gastrointestinal active peptides and promote the expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT or serotonin) receptor 4 (5-HT4R), thereby promoting small intestinal peristalsis. The strains could also effectively increase the thickness of the colonic mucosa. However, what was different from previous studies was that these results were independent of the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and 5-HT. Further analysis of the intestinal flora revealed that the relative abundances of the genera Faecalibaculum and Ruminococcaceae_UCG_014 in the constipated mice increased significantly, whereas that of Erysipelatoclostridium decreased. A correlation analysis between the intestinal flora and evaluated gastrointestinal indicators demonstrated that the relative abundances of the genera Anaerotruncus, Angelakisella, Erysipelatoclostridium and Ruminococcaceae_UCG_014 were negatively correlated with the levels of gastrointestinal active peptides. B. bifidum FXJCJ32M2 can increase the relative abundances of Turicibacter and Dubosiella, and this was positively correlated with the expression of aquaporin 8 and vasoactive intestinal peptide receptor 1 but could not effectively alleviate faecal dryness or promote colonic motility. These findings suggest that B. bifidum shows significant intraspecific differences in the remission mechanism and provides a theoretical basis for subsequent population experiments and personalised treatment for constipation.

Beneficial effects of lactitol on the composition of gut microbiota in constipated patients

OBJECTIVE

To explore the changes in microbial composition and the corresponding impact after lactitol treatment in constipated patients.

METHODS

Altogether 29 consecutive outpatients diagnosed with chronic constipation from three centers were recruited and stratified based on their history of diabetes mellitus. All patients were administered with oral lactitol for 2 weeks, and a symptoms diary of constipation was recorded. Fecal samples were collected before and after lactitol treatment, and were analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect gut microbiota.

RESULTS

Twenty patients with diabetes mellitus and nine without, all with chronic constipation, were enrolled in this study. After 2-week administration of lactitol, their subscale scores and constipation symptoms significantly decreased (P < 0.05). An analysis of fecal flora using 16S rRNA sequencing found an increasing trend of abundance of Bifidobacterium in the post-lactitol group (P = 0.08). Actinobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bifidobacteriales, Bifidobacteriaceae and Bifidobacterium were significantly more abundant after lactitol administration. Real-time PCR showed significantly high DNA copy numbers of Bifidobacterium after lactitol treatment (1.39 × 10¹⁰ vs 2.74 × 10⁹ copies/μL, P = 0.01). The results of 16S rRNA sequencing and real-time PCR illustrated an increasing trend of Bifidobacterium in both patients with and without diabetes. In addition, Bifidobacterium was negatively correlated with constipation subscale scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Alterations in fecal flora composition after lactitol supplementation, especially in terms of an increasing trend of Bifidobacterium, alleviated constipation symptoms. Lactitol may be a promising prebiotic candidate for patients with constipation, regardless of diabetes mellitus.

Fecal Recovery of Probiotics Administered as a Multi-Strain Formulation during Antibiotic Treatment

The present study aimed to investigate whether probiotic recovery is affected when consumed together with antibiotics. Fecal samples were collected from an earlier antibiotic associated diarrhea, randomized, placebo-controlled study with a product consisting of a combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37, and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07, B. lactis Bl-04 at equal numbers and at a total dose of 10¹⁰ CFU. Fecal samples were collected during the screening visit (T0), i.e., at the time of antibiotic prescription, and then on the last day of the antibiotic treatment (T1) as well as seven days after the subject had stopped taking the antibiotic treatment (T2) and at two weeks after completing antibiotic treatment and one week after probiotic/placebo consumption stopped (T3). Samples were analyzed for the presence of the four administered strains. The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01596829. Detection levels of all four strains were significantly increased from T0 to T1 and returned to baseline level from T2 to T3. There were also significantly more subjects with detectable levels of L. paracasei Lpc-37, B. lactis Bi-07, and B. lactis Bl-04 at T1 and T2 compared to T0 and T3, and compared to placebo. Each of the four strains could be detected in the feces of patients apparently unaffected by the simultaneous consumption of antibiotics.

Impact of a Multistrain Probiotic Formulation with High Bifidobacterial Content on the Fecal Bacterial Community and Short-Chain Fatty Acid Levels of Healthy Adults

The consumption of probiotic products is continually increasing, supported by growing scientific evidence of their efficacy. Considering that probiotics may primarily affect health (either positively or negatively) through gut microbiota modulation, the first aspect that should be evaluated is their impact on the intestinal microbial ecosystem. In this study, we longitudinally analyzed the bacterial taxonomic composition and organic acid levels in four fecal samples collected over the course of four weeks from 19 healthy adults who ingested one capsule a day for two weeks of a formulation containing at least 70 billion colony-forming units, consisting of 25% lactobacilli and 75% Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis. We found that 16S rRNA gene profiling showed that probiotic intake only induced an increase in a single operational taxonomic unit ascribed to B. animalis, plausibly corresponding to the ingested bifidobacterial strain. Furthermore, liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry revealed a significant increase in the lactate and acetate/butyrate ratio and a trend toward a decrease in succinate following probiotic administration. The presented results indicate that the investigated probiotic formulation did not alter the intestinal bacterial ecosystem of healthy adults and suggest its potential ability to promote colonization resistance in the gut through a transient increase in fecal bifidobacteria, lactic acid, and the acetate/butyrate ratio.

Dose-Response Recovery of Probiotic Strains in Simulated Gastro-Intestinal Passage

The probiotic definition stipulates “adequate amounts”. Here, we investigated the metabolic output and recovery rate of probiotic strains using a simulated upper gastro-intestinal passage and colonic fermentation. Two different doses, 7 × 10⁹ colony forming units (CFU) and 7 × 10¹⁰ CFU, of a probiotic mixture (Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04, Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37, and Lactobacillus plantarum Lp-115) or placebo were tested. The four strains were quantified by qPCR and the metabolites analyzed by gas chromatography. There was a dose-response in the detection of all four strains. There was a slightly larger increase between the two doses for L. paracasei Lpc-37 as compared with the other strains; this may suggest a greater robustness of this strain. Compared with the placebo, the high dose simulations generated more propionic acid and a higher total of short chain fatty acids (SCFA). Higher doses of a species are required to reach measurable increases above the baseline level of this species.
