Abstract
The potential of plant-based diets and drugs to prevent and control obesity has been attributed to the presence of several biologically active phytochemicals. The study aimed to assess herb consumption's impact on alleviating the risks and hazards associated with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and the promotion of fertility. Eighty rats were allocated into four distinct groups. Group 1 (G1) was provided with a basal diet and acted as the control group. Group 2 (G2) was provided with an HFD. Group 3 (G3) was provided with HFD supplemented with chia seeds and Hibiscus sabdariffa L. The fourth group of subjects was provided with HFD supplemented with Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander). The feeding session was sustained for 10 weeks, and the biochemical parameters were evaluated. The administration of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander) (G4) resulted in a more significant reduction in all biochemical parameters compared to G3, which received a diet consisting of chia seeds and Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Additionally, the average number of embryonic lobes and the average number of offspring after birth were found to be considerably more significant in the normal control group (G1) and group (G4) compared to the HFD group (G2) and group (G3) (P < 0.01). Group 4 (G4) was administered a diet enriched with Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), which demonstrated superior outcomes in many biochemical indicators and the promotion of fertility in obese female rats.

Abstract
Methods and Results The study included 200 Egyptian subjects. They were divided into four equal groups: group 1: obese patients with NAFLD and T2DM (O+/NAFLD+/DM+), group 2: nonobese patients with NAFLD and T2DM (O-/NAFLD+/DM+), group 3: obese nondiabetic patients with NAFLD (O+/NAFLD+/DM-), and group 4: nonobese healthy control subjects. Plasma adiponectin was measured using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) technique. Ultrasonography was used to diagnose NAFLD. CIMT was assessed using Doppler ultrasonography. Plasma adiponectin was significantly lower and CIMT was significantly higher in O+/NAFLD+/DM+, as compared with O-/NAFLD+/DM+, O+/NAFLD+/DM-, and control subjects (p < 0.001 for all). A significant negative correlation was found between adiponectin and CIMT in obese patients with NAFLD (p < 0.05), but not in patients with NAFLD and T2DM. The significant independent predictors of CIMT were diabetes duration, BMI (body mass index), albumin/creatinine ratio, and cholesterol. Conclusion Plasma adiponectin is inversely correlated with CIMT in obese patients with NAFLD, but not in patients with NAFLD and T2DM. Hypoadiponectinemia could be a good indicator of cardiovascular risk in obese patients with NAFLD, with or without T2DM, but not in nonobese patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
AIM Inspite of availability of a variety of drugs to treat type 2 diabetes, little is known about their effects on other systems. Normalization of glucose metabolism by these drugs may consequently affect the secretory function in adipocytes. Secretory adipocytokines like adiponectin and leptin are emerging as novel therapeutic targets for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present study was undertaken to analyze the effects of commonly used Oral Hypoglycemic Agents (OHAs) alone, or in combination with other drugs and/or insulin on circulatory adiponectin and leptin levels, lipid profile, and blood pressure in diabetic subjects. METHODS The study was undertaken at IRSHA and Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College and Hospital, MS, India. Clinically diagnosed T2DM subjects and age, gender matched healthy controls were recruited. Fasting blood was collected from each subject and the blood samples were analyzed for circulatory adipocytokines and lipid parameters using commercial kits. RESULTS Serum adiponectin levels were significantly increased while leptin significantly decreased in diabetic men (p<0.05) and women (p<0.001) on OHA, as compared to healthy controls. Triglyceride levels significantly decreased (p<0.05) in diabetic men, however, they remained unchanged in women despite same drug treatment. Serum HDL and LDL levels (p<0.001) were significantly lower in diabetic women as compared to healthy women. Systolic (p<0.05) and diastolic (p<0.001) blood pressure was significantly high in diabetic men but remained unchanged in women. CONCLUSIONS Frequently used OHAs significantly improve circulatory levels of adipocytokines. Selecting best treatment option for each patient is a key, and 2012 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and ADA guidelines recommend diabetes treatment to be individualized depending on various socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. We recommend regular analysis of circulatory adipocytokines in T2DM patients to help clinicians select the best treatment option to normalize levels of these important therapeutic targets.

Abstract
We compared the obesity parameters and selected adipokines—leptin, adiponectin, and resistin—in obese patients with hypertension and normotensive patients. A total of 67 nondiabetic obese outpatients were divided into 2 groups: A–hypertensive and B–normotensive. Serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and insulin were measured. Weight, height, waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured to calculate waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), weight-to-height ratio, visceral adiposity index, and body adiposity index (BAI). Among patients with hypertension, significant positive correlations were observed between leptin and body mass index and BAI ( r = .31 and r = .63, respectively). In normotensive patients, leptin positively correlated with BAI ( r = .73, P < .01) and negatively with WHR ( r = −.55, P < .0001); adiponectin negatively correlated with WHR ( r = .38, P < .01) and BAI ( r = .52; P < .0001), and resistin negatively correlated with WHR ( r = −.36, P < .05). In conclusion, visceral obesity and leptin are associated with hypertension in obese patients.

Abstract
A little is known about the prevalence of elevated alanine transaminase in a Moroccan healthy population. Our aim was to search for the upper limit of normal alanine transaminase in the blood donors and then to apply the upper limit of normal alanine found in the population so as to assess the prevalence of subjects with abnormal transaminase level. We then, investigated for factors associated with increased level of transaminase in our population. This study was carried out on 14071 blood donors, (74.1% of men and 25.9% female) aged between 18 to 60 years, randomly chosen. Serum transaminase activity was measured using on IEMS Reader, Labsystems. Hepatitis B and C were performed by ELISA. The upper limit of normal transaminase found were 64 for men and 52 for women. Consequently, 2.08% blood donors had an abnormal level of transaminase. Follow up results revealed that drug was the first cause of elevated transaminase in our cohort followed by diet and alcohol consumption. One seroconversion for hepatitis C was identified. In conclusion, this study showed that even though there is an evident lack of efficiency in using alanine aminotransferase testing qualifying blood donors in our country, preventing viral potential transmission through transfusions was possible.
