Abstract
Bacterial resistance is considered one of the most important public health problems of the century, due to the ability of bacteria to rapidly develop resistance mechanisms, which makes it difficult to treat infections, leading to a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Based on this, several options are being sought as an alternative to currently available treatments, with a particular focus on nanotechnology. Nanomaterials have important potential for use in medical interventions aimed at preventing, diagnosing and treating numerous diseases by directing the delivery of drugs. This review presents data on the use of polymeric nanoparticles having in vitro and in vivo activity against bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family.

Abstract
This study was conducted to detect the presence of colistin-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) in raw chicken meat and bean sprouts collected from local markets and to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of the E. coli isolates. A total of 100 samples, comprised of 50 raw chicken meat and 50 bean sprouts, were collected and processed. Kirby-Bauer method was used to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns, and PCR amplification was used to detect E. coli species-specific and colistin resistance (mcr-1 and mcr-2) genes. The results showed that 52.1% (12/23) of the E. coli isolated from raw chicken meat were positive for the colistin resistance encoding gene, mcr-1, whereas all the E. coli isolates from bean sprouts were negative for colistin resistance encoding genes. The findings show that chicken meat contaminated with colistin-resistant E. coli may pose public health risk to the consumers. Hence, prudent usage of antibiotics and hygienic handling of food items helps to prevent and combat the risks of spreading of colistin-resistant E. coli and the public health risks it may pose. More comprehensive and large-scale studies focusing on all the possible sources of colistin-resistant E. coli are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The heat sensitive factor (HSF) of the fish pathogen Yersinia ruckeri was previously identified as an unusual band on SDS-PAGE. According to this, Y. ruckeri strains were classified in HSF+ and HSF - in terms of the presence/absence of the factor. Experiments carried out by injection challenge with HSF + strains caused high mortalities in rainbow trout. In contrast, HSF - strains did not cause mortality. In conclusion, HSF appeared to be a relevant virulence factor in Y. ruckeri. RESULTS We report here the identification and study of the gene coding for the enzyme involved in the production of HSF. Culture medium containing SDS and Coomassie brilliant blue dye was used to screen a mini-Tn5 Km2 mutant library of Y. ruckeri 150. Blue colonies lacking a surrounding creamy deposit, a phenotype described in former studies as HSF - , were identified. DNA sequence analysis of a selected mutant revealed that this had a transposon interruption in a chromosome-located gene which codes for a heat sensitive alkyl sulphatase of 78.7 kDa (YraS; Yersinia ruckeri alkyl sulphatase) which is able to degrade SDS to 1-dodecanol. As it was expected, the introduction of the yraS gene into an HSF - strain turned this into HSF + . Surprisingly, although the protein allows Y. ruckeri to degrade SDS, the bacterium could not use this compound as the sole carbon source. Moreover, the yraS mutant showed a similar level of SDS resistance to the parental strain. It was the interruption of the acrA gene which made Y. ruckeri sensitive to this compound. LD50 experiments showed a similar virulence of the yraS mutant and parental strain. CONCLUSIONS The HSF of Y. ruckeri is the product of the alkyl sulphatase YraS, able to degrade SDS to 1-dodecanol. This degradation is not linked to the utilization of SDS as a carbon source and surprisingly, the enzyme is not involved in bacterial virulence or in the high SDS resistance displayed by the bacterium. This role is played by the AcrAB-TolC system.

Abstract
Escherichia coli are mostly free living bacteria that harbour the gastrointestinal tract of poultry. Howbeit, pathogenic Escherichia coli are very important foodborne pathogens that can cause severe complications, illnesses and deaths in humans. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic diversity or relatedness of 62 Escherichia coli strains isolated from ducks and the environment using Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC). The analysis of the Escherichia coli strains by ERIC produced DNA bands of different sizes for differentiation purposes and cluster analysis at a coefficient of 0.85 grouped the strains into different clusters and singletons. At this coefficient the Escherichia coli strains were grouped into thirteen clusters and eleven singletons with discriminatory index (D value) of 0.946. The ERIC PCR adapted in this study showed to be a useful genotyping tool for determining the genetic relatedness of the duck Escherichia coli strains. Comparison of the genetic relatedness among foodborne pathogens is important for foodborne diseases outbreak investigations.
