Propionic acid-rich fermentation (PARF) production from organic wastes: A review

Nowadays, increasing attention has been drawn to biological valorization of organic wastes. Wherein, propionic acid-rich fermentation (PARF) has become a focal point of research. The objective of this review is to make a thorough investigation on the potential of PARF production and give future outlook. By discussing the key factors affecting PARF including substrate types, pH, temperature, retention time, etc., and various improving methods to enhance PARF including different pretreatments, inoculation optimization and immobilization, a comprehensive summary on how to achieve PARF from organic waste is presented. Then, current application of PARF liquid is concluded, which is found to play an essential role in the efficient denitrification and phosphorus removal of wastewater and preparation of microbial lipids. Finally, the environmental performance of PARF production is reviewed through life cycle assessment studies, and environmentally sensitive sectors are summarized for process optimization, providing a reference for waste management in low carbon scenarios.

Modeling the Methane Production Kinetics of Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Agricultural Wastes Using Sigmoidal Functions

The modified sigmoidal bacteria growth functions (the modified Gompertz, logistic, and Richards) were used to evaluate the methane production process kinetics of agricultural wastes. The mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion experiments were conducted with various agricultural wastes as feedstocks, including cow manure, corn straw, grape leaves, vines, wine residue, strawberry leaves, and tomato leaves. The results showed that anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure and other agricultural wastes increased the methane yields while it prolonged the lag phase time. Compared with the modified Gompertz and logistic models, the modified Richards model obtained higher correlation coefficients and was able to fit experimental data better. The results of this study were expected to determine a suitable model to simulate and study the kinetic process of anaerobic co-digestion with mixed agricultural wastes as feedstocks.

Enhancing anaerobic digestion of food waste through biochemical methane potential assays at different substrate: inoculum ratios

Food waste has a high energy potential that can be converted into useful energy in the form of methane via anaerobic digestion. Biochemical Methane Potential assays (BMPs) were conducted to quantify the impacts on methane production of different ratios of food waste. Anaerobic digester sludge (ADS) was used as the inoculum, and BMPs were performed at food waste:inoculum ratios of 0.42, 1.42, and 3.0g chemical oxygen demand/g volatile solids (VS). The 1.42 ratio had the highest CH₄-COD recovery: 90% of the initial total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) was from food waste, followed by ratios 0.42 and 3.0 at 69% and 57%, respectively. Addition of food waste above 0.42 caused a lag time for CH₄ production that increased with higher ratios, which highlighted the negative impacts of overloading with food waste. The Gompertz equation was able to represent the results well, and it gave lag times of 0, 3.6 and 30days and maximum methane productions of 370, 910, and 1950mL for ratios 0.42, 1.42 and 3.0, respectively. While ratio 3.0 endured a long lag phase and low VSS destruction, ratio 1.42 achieved satisfactory results for all performance criteria. These results provide practical guidance on food-waste-to-inoculum ratios that can lead to optimizing methanogenic yield.
