Educating generation Z: Psychosocial dimensions of the clinical learning environment that predict student satisfaction

Generation Z (Gen Z) nursing students have characteristics that differentiate them from previous cohorts. They are entrenched in technology, prefer to work at their own pace, seek a great deal of feedback, and can be anxious. Because Gen Z is also entrepreneurial, it is important to identify strategies for promoting satisfaction among Gen Z nursing students to retain them in nursing. This study sought to identify the psychosocial dimensions of the clinical learning environment that best predict Gen Z nursing student satisfaction in the medical-surgical clinical learning environment. A secondary analysis was performed on data collected using the Revised Clinical Learning Environment Inventory-32. Maximum Likelihood regression analysis identified predictors of satisfaction. Three subscales of the CLEI-32, reflecting 3 psychosocial dimensions of the clinical learning environment, significantly predicted student satisfaction in the clinical learning environment, after controlling for clustering effects of students within hospitals. Findings were consistent with the literature on Gen Z learners and revealed that their satisfaction improves when they can make decisions, work at their own pace, and receive direction, feedback, and support. The effect of hospital environment on the clinical learning environment should be investigated further; other variables that predict satisfaction remain to be identified.

The role of academic-practice partnerships from perspectives of nursing students: A cross -sectional study

BACKGROUND

Collaborations between nursing schools and teaching hospitals are important for achieving the goals of clinical nursing education. While previous work showed that nursing students benefit from academic-practice partnerships, it is unclear how these collaborations help nursing students.

OBJECTIVE

To identify the role of academic-practice partnerships from the perspective of nursing students. Two hypothetical models based on system theory were proposed that utilized input-transformation-output processes. The input, transformation, and outputs were the "academic-practice partnership", "interaction between nurses and nursing students", and "professional self-concept and organizational socialization of nursing students", respectively.

DESIGN

This study used a cross-sectional research design.

SETTING

This study was conducted at a nursing school in Korea.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants included 243 fourth-year nursing students who were about to graduate.

METHODS

A questionnaire was used to collect data in August 2019. Path analysis was used to explore the models to determine the roles of academic-practice partnerships.

RESULTS

Two hypothetical models indicated the role of academic-practice partnership. The academic-practice partnership positively affected the interaction between nurses and nursing students, which directly and indirectly benefitted professional self-concept and organizational socialization of nursing students.

CONCLUSION

The higher perceived academic-practice partnership by nursing students, the better their interactions with nurses, professional self-concept, and organizational socialization. Therefore, nursing students should be aware of the academic-practice partnerships and nursing educators should effectively show these partnerships or collaborations to nursing students. Moreover, nursing educators should also encourage nursing students to interact with their preceptors in their practicums and, as nurses are important educators in academic-practice partnerships, they should be qualified as preceptors to teach nursing students.

“Nursing Care with a Human Approach”: A Model for Practice with Service Excellence

Objetivo. Desarrollar un modelo para la práctica de cuidado que permita mejorar de forma continua el cuidado de enfermería en el Hospital Universitario Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (FSFB). Materiales y método. Estudio desarrollado por fases secuenciales que incluyó: 1) Identificación de la necesidad de contar con un modelo de cuidado para la práctica, 2) Caracterización del contexto y del escenario deseado; 3) Revisión de literatura; 4) Descripción del modelo; 5) Validación. Resultados. Las tendencias globales en el uso de modelos de enfermería en la práctica clínica reconoce aspectos comunes y enfatiza la pertinencia, metodologías y diversos roles en la implementación. El contexto y proyección de excelencia para enfermería en la FSFB requieren la orientación de un modelo para la práctica que oriente el cuidado y que responda a la vocación de servicio centrado en la experiencia de la salud humana. Conclusión. El modelo de la práctica “Cuidado de enfermería con enfoque humano”, permite comprender y comunicar lo esencial de la práctica enfermería en el ámbito del hospital universitario FSFB, para cualificar dicha práctica de manera permanente.
