Perceived Social Support on the Relationship Between ADD/ADHD and Both Anxious and Depressive Symptoms Among Canadian Adults

OBJECTIVE

The primary goal of the present research was to examine whether the relationships that social support demonstrates with both anxiety and depression varied between adults with and without ADD/ADHD in a Canadian sample.

METHOD

Data were obtained from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (N ≥ 16,354). Presence of social support, diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and experience of major depressive episodes (MDEs) were estimated in the self-report ADD/ADHD and non-ADD/ADHD groups.

RESULTS

Although social support was negatively associated with having GAD or experiencing an MDE, and self-report ADD/ADHD was positively associated with these outcomes. Presence of self-report ADD/ADHD did not significantly modify the relationships between social support and GAD or MDE.

CONCLUSION

Social support may be a protective factor against symptoms of anxiety and depression in the general Canadian population, for adults with and without ADHD.

Examination of Measurement Invariance Across Culture and Gender on the RCMAS-2 Short Form Among Singapore and U.S. Adolescents

Tests of measurement invariance were conducted across culture and gender on the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale–Second Edition (RCMAS-2) Short Form in a sample of 1,003 Singapore and U.S. adolescents. The results of multi-group confirmatory factor analyses across culture and gender supported at least partial measurement invariance. ANOVA results indicated significant cultural and gender effects, with U.S. adolescents reporting higher levels of anxiety than Singapore adolescents, but with a negligible effect size, and females reporting higher levels of anxiety than males on the RCMAS-2 Short Form. Implications of the findings of the study are discussed.

Patterns and predictors of anxiety among siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders

The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of anxiety among siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and determine the characteristics of the child with ASD and their parents that predicted anxiety. Data was collected from 1,755 siblings of children with ASD whose families participated in the Simons Simplex Collection; siblings ranged in age from 3 to 18 years (M = 9 years). Male siblings were at increased risk for sub-clinical anxiety problems during middle childhood. Parental history of anxiety disorders, higher maternal pragmatic language, and more proband behavior problems predicted higher anxiety. While siblings overall did not show elevated anxiety symptoms, higher rates of sub-clinical anxiety problems among males and siblings in middle childhood are cause for concern.
