Transient Cutaneous Alterations of the Newborn

Neonatal cutaneous alterations are common, usually appearing at birth or during the first few days of life. Most of these conditions are physiological, benign, and transient, arising from a combination of immaturity of the newborn skin with environmental factors. Nonetheless, some of them may eventually be a clue to underlying disorders. Physicians should therefore be aware of these clinical manifestations so that parents can be reassured and, when necessary, complementary investigations can be undertaken.

Self-limited neonatal periumbilical erythema

We report three cases of neonatal, noninfectious, periumbilical erythema that resolved shortly after umbilical stump detachment. We hypothesize that these infants experienced an inflammatory and vasodilatory response during the normal umbilical cord separation process. We propose a new term: self-limited neonatal periumbilical erythema.

Educational paper: neonatal skin lesions

Although most skin lesions in neonates are transient or benign, they may also be the presenting symptom of a life-threatening disease such as herpes neonatorum. In the present review, we present a short overview of neonatal skin lesions and a practical table to guide the general paediatrician in the diagnosis and management of neonatal skin lesions. Congenital syphilis in the 21st century

While the prevalence of congenital syphilis continues to be low throughout most of the developed world, there has been a slight resurgence of the disease in several European countries, including Spain. In this context, we need to become more familiar with the signs and symptoms of this disease and consider its diagnosis in patients with only mild clinical manifestations. A definitive diagnosis may be difficult or even impossible in patients whose diagnostic tests reveal low positive titers or inconsistent results. The cornerstone of congenital syphilis control is prenatal screening and the treatment of infected mothers with penicillin, an effective and economical intervention. Based on a review of the literature supplemented by data from our own clinical experience, this article provides a detailed description of the clinical manifestations of congenital syphilis as well as the various diagnostic methods and treatments available.
