Emerging Smart Home Technologies to Facilitate Engaging With Aging

Engaging with aging (EWA), the ongoing process of an individual to identify resources and implement adaptive strategies to maximize quality of life, may be enhanced by advances in information technology and adaptive upgrades to the built environment. Smart home technologies (SmHT) introduce passive monitoring features into the residential infrastructure to promote older adults' ability to manage day-to-day living and age in place. This article provides an overview of current and emerging SmHT and discusses opportunities to leverage this technology for enhancing the capacity of older adults to engage with their own aging. There are opportunities to create smart homes that enhance physical and cognitive capacity for older adults, but there are also ethical and practical challenges that will inform the design of future smart home systems. Maltrato a las personas mayores: una revisión narrativa

El maltrato a las personas mayores es un tema de interés creciente, tanto así que se considera un problema de salud pública. Hay particularidades que hacen del entorno colombiano un ambiente propicio para generar situaciones de maltrato: la exposición a la “violencia a gran escala”, la diferencia de género y el cambio de la pirámide poblacional. Según el estudio SABE Colombia, el 12,9 % de las personas mayores informó haber sufrido maltrato, del cual el más común es el psicológico, seguido por el físico, el financiero y el sexual. A pesar de que el Estado reconoce al adulto mayor como “sujeto de especial protección”, aún hay desconocimiento por parte de los profesionales de la salud a la hora de enfrentar estos casos. Este debería ser un tema de obligatoriedad moral, por lo que se debe abordar a profundidad para así identificarlo oportunamente y proponer estrategias de prevención de una manera contextualizada. Esta revisión de la literatura tiene por objetivos sintetizar la información epidemiológica disponible, los factores de riesgo y las estrategias de evaluación y plantear las rutas de atención idóneas asentadas en los aspectos legales alrededor del maltrato hacia los ancianos en Colombia.

A Systematic Review of Financial Exploitation Measures in Prevalence Studies

The financial exploitation of older adults has garnered the attention of society as well as state and federal governments in a way that elder abuse has never been able to achieve. It is frequently asserted that financial exploitation deserves this attention in part because it is the most prevalent form of elder abuse. This article systematically reviews the measurement of financial exploitation in comparison with other forms of elder abuse and concludes that its measurement is considerably more variable than other forms of abuse. Consequently, improvements in the measurement of financial exploitation are warranted.

The vexing problem of defining financial exploitation

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper was to study the vexing problem of defining financial exploitation. Advocates and practitioners in the field who have been battling financial exploitation are pleased to observe the increased attention that financial exploitation is receiving at all levels of society. With this increased attention, however, there has been a conflation of terms used to describe financial exploitation, resulting in some confusion about what constitutes financial exploitation.

Design/methodology/approach

– Fully recognizing that definitions serve different functions, this paper identifies three main purposes of a definition and then describes the myriad ways financial exploitation has been defined in the research literature, by organizations, and in civil and criminal statutes.

Findings

– Financial exploitation has been defined in multiple ways within and across categories. Furthermore, the definition has expanded over time. This paper proposes the need for greater definitional clarity around the concept of financial exploitation, and argues that at a minimum a distinction must be made between financial exploitation and financial fraud.

Originality/value

– This is the first paper to comprehensively review the myriad ways in which financial exploitation has been defined in the literature, by organizations and within state civil and criminal statutes.

Keeping older adults safe, protected, and healthy by preventing financial exploitation

As the number of older adults increases, the incidence of financial exploitation is also expected to rise. This prevalent older adult maltreatment often goes undetected and unreported and may result in poor physiologic and/or psychological health outcomes that are not perceived as abuse-related by healthcare providers. This article focuses on financial exploitation of older adults as a health care problem, as it often occurs when vulnerable older adults are receiving help and/or health care services from trusted caregivers.

Managing resident-to-resident elder mistreatment in nursing homes: the SEARCH approach

This article describes an educational program to inform nursing and care staff of the management of resident-to-resident elder mistreatment (R-REM) in nursing homes, using the SEARCH (Support, Evaluate, Act, Report, Care plan, and Help to avoid) approach. Although relatively little research has been conducted on this form of abuse, there is mounting interest in R-REM because such aggression has been found to be extensive and can have both physical and psychological consequences for residents and staff. The goal of the SEARCH approach is to support staff in the identification and recognition of R-REM as well as to suggest recommendations for management. The educational program and the SEARCH approach are described. Three case studies from the research project are presented, illustrating how nurses and care staff can use the SEARCH approach to manage R-REM in nursing homes. Resident and staff safety and well-being can be enhanced by the use of the evidence-based SEARCH approach.

[Risk factors influencing probability and severity of elder abuse in community-dwelling older adults: applying zero-inflated negative binomial modeling of abuse count data]

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to identify risk factors that influence the probability and severity of elder abuse in community-dwelling older adults.

METHODS

This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect data from community-dwelling Koreans, 65 and older (N=416). Logistic regression, negative binomial regression and zero-inflated negative binomial regression model for abuse count data were utilized to determine risk factors for elder abuse.

RESULTS

The rate of older adults who experienced any one category of abuse was 32.5%. By zero-inflated negative binomial regression analysis, the experience of verbal-psychological abuse was associated with marital status and family support, while the experience of physical abuse was associated with self-esteem, perceived economic stress and family support. Family support was found to be a salient risk factor of probability of abuse in both verbal-psychological and physical abuse. Self-esteem was found to be a salient risk factor of probability and severity of abuse in physical abuse alone.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest that tailored prevention and intervention considering both types of elder abuse and target populations might be beneficial for preventative efficiency of elder abuse.

Elder abuse and neglect: definitions, epidemiology, and approaches to emergency department screening

Elder abuse and neglect is estimated to affect approximately 700,000 to 1.2 million elderly people a year with an estimated annual cost of tens of billions of dollars. Despite the large population at risk, its significant morbidity and mortality, and substantial cost to society, elder abuse continues to be underrecognized and underreported. This article aims to increase the awareness of elder abuse by reviewing the demographics, epidemiology, and risk factors of elder abuse, followed by a discussion of screening tools and ways to increase awareness and reporting.
