Abstract
The 7th Symposium on Primary Breast Cancer in Older Women, hosted by the University of Nottingham in association with the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG), was held in the Jubilee Conference Centre in Nottingham on 1 March 2024. With the theme of 'involving the caregivers', topics included: barriers to clinical trial participation among older women, the use of geriatric assessment tools to tailor treatments to individual patient's level of frailty and interventions such as medication review and de-prescription to reduce toxicity and increase compliance with treatment.The symposium began with an upbeat introduction from the symposium chair, Kwok-Leung Cheung (Professor of Breast Surgery and Medical Education, University of Nottingham, Consultant Breast Surgeon, Royal Derby Hospital; UK National Representative, SIOG). Cheung welcomed attendees and contributors from a wide range of disciplines including surgeons, geriatricians, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists and patient representatives.Cheung outlined how this biennial symposium, the only one of its kind to focus on primary breast cancer in older women, had grown in both size and ambition since its inception in 2010. For the first time, this year's proceedings included a dedicated multidisciplinary team discussion of geriatric breast cancer cases submitted by delegates.The main theme of the day's proceedings "involving the caregivers" was also emphasized in the introductory comments.

Abstract
Psychedelics have traditionally been used for spiritual and recreational purposes, but recent developments in psychotherapy have highlighted their potential as therapeutic agents. These compounds, which act as potent 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) agonists, have been recognized for their ability to enhance neural plasticity through the activation of the serotoninergic and glutamatergic systems. However, the implications of these findings for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly dementia, have not been fully explored. In recent years, studies have revealed the modulatory and beneficial effects of psychedelics in the context of dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related dementia, which lacks a definitive cure. Psychedelics such as N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and Psilocybin have shown potential in mitigating the effects of this debilitating disease. These compounds not only target neurotransmitter imbalances but also act at the molecular level to modulate signalling pathways in AD, including the brain-derived neurotrophic factor signalling pathway and the subsequent activation of mammalian target of rapamycin and other autophagy regulators. Therefore, the controlled and dose-dependent administration of psychedelics represents a novel therapeutic intervention worth exploring and considering for the development of drugs for the treatment of AD-related dementia. In this article, we critically examined the literature that sheds light on the therapeutic possibilities and pathways of psychedelics for AD-related dementia. While this emerging field of research holds great promise, further studies are necessary to elucidate the long-term safety, efficacy, and optimal treatment protocols. Ultimately, the integration of psychedelics into the current treatment paradigm may provide a transformative approach for addressing the unmet needs of individuals living with AD-related dementia and their caregivers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the research attitudes and willingness to participate in clinical research among cancer survivors with varying degrees of cognitive function. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of data collected through the University of California Irvine Consent-to-Contact registry. Cancer survivors completed the Cognitive Function Instrument (CFI), the Research Attitudes Questionnaire (RAQ), and willingness to participate (WTP) in certain research procedures. Perceived cognitive impairment (CI) was defined as the worst 20% CFI scores. RESULTS Here, 265 CI and 909 cognitively non-impaired (CNI) participants' data were analyzed. Mean age and sex distribution were similar, with fewer non-Hispanic Whites and education years among CI participants. More CI participants self-reported past diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, stroke, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol abuse (all p < 0.05). CI participants were significantly more interested in studies investigating approved medications (92% vs. 87%, p = 0.030), lumbar puncture (47% vs. 38%, p = 0.027), and autopsy (78% vs. 69%, p = 0.022). After removing survivors with co-existing neuropsychiatric conditions, interest in autopsy studies remained statistically higher among CI (79% vs. 69%, p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS Participants with cancer and CI are open to research procedures and interventions that are traditionally less utilized, which may facilitate the discovery of the pathogenesis and interventions for cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI).

Abstract
The recruitment of participants for research studies may be subject to bias. The Prospective Imaging Study of Ageing (PISA) aims to characterize the phenotype and natural history of healthy adult Australians at high future risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Participants approached to take part in PISA were selected from existing cohort studies with available genomewide genetic data for both successfully and unsuccessfully recruited participants, allowing us to investigate the genetic contribution to voluntary recruitment, including the genetic predisposition to AD. We use a polygenic risk score (PRS) approach to test to what extent the genetic risk for AD, and related risk factors predict participation in PISA. We did not identify a significant association of genetic risk for AD with study participation, but we did identify significant associations with PRS for key causal risk factors for AD, IQ, household income and years of education. We also found that older and female participants were more likely to take part in the study. Our findings highlight the importance of considering bias in key risk factors for AD in the recruitment of individuals for cohort studies.

Abstract
Many people with dementia are interested in taking part in research, including when they no longer have capacity to provide informed consent. Advance research directives (ARD) enable people to document their wishes about research participation prior to becoming decisionally incapacitated. However, there are few available ARD resources. This Australian interview study elicited the views of people aged 55 years and older about the content of an ARD form and guidance booklet and processes to support research planning. Participants (n = 25; 55 to 83 years) had interests in dementia research. All participants described the ARD materials as easy to understand, and all expressed willingness to take part in future research. Nearly half believed that an ARD should be legally enforceable, while others saw it as a nonbinding document to guide decisions about their participation in research. Close family members were preferred as proxy decision-makers. The ARD form and guidance booklet may be adapted for use elsewhere.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Insufficient ethnoracial diversity is a pervasive challenge in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. The Recruitment Innovations for Diversity Enhancement (RIDE) is grounded in the premise that culturally informed narratives of research participation can inspire individuals from a given culture-sharing group to consider research enrollment. This study examines factors associated with interest in AD research among Black or African American adults following exposure to RIDE narrative campaign materials. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A community-based sample of 500 Black or African American adults viewed RIDE narrative materials online and completed a survey of perceptions about research, AD risk, and likelihood of enrolling in AD research. Logistic regression examined predictors and mediators of self-reported likelihood of participating in AD research. RESULTS Most (72%) participants reported interest in being contacted for AD research opportunities. After controlling for key variables, prior experience with clinical research and trust in medical researchers emerged as independent predictors of likelihood of enrolling in AD research. Perceived burden of AD research partially mediated the effects of prior research experience and trust on likelihood of enrollment. Perceived benefits of AD research also played a mediating role, accounting for over one third of the effect of trust on likelihood of enrollment. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS This study advances the field's understanding of how narrative may function to enhance diversity in AD research. Findings suggest that participant narratives should address experiences regarding the burdens and potential benefits of AD research participation as these factors may influence decisions leading to subsequent research enrollment.
