Effect of Water Storage and Bleaching on Light Transmission Properties and Translucency of Nanofilled Flowable Composite

This study investigated the effect of water sorption and bleaching on light transmission properties (Straight-light transmission (G0), Light diffusion (DF) and Amount of transmitted light (AV)) and translucency parameters (TP) of nano-filled flowable composites. A total of 35 composite disks (0.5 mm thickness) were prepared using A2 shade of 5 nanofiller composites (n = 7/each); Beautifil Flow Plus X F03 (SHOFU INC), Clearfil Majesty ES Flow (Kuraray Noritake Dental), Estelite Universal Flow (EUF, Tokuyama Dental), Estelite Flow Quick (Tokuyama Dental) and Filtek Supreme Ultra Flowable Restorative (FSU, 3M ESPE). Then, they were cured by LEDs (VALO, Ultradent) on standard mood (1000 mW/cm2) for 20 s. Samples were tested for straight-line transmission (G0), diffusion (DF), the amount of transmitted light (AV) and (TP) immediately after 24 h (dry storage), after 1-week water storage and after each of the three cycles of in-office bleaching (HiLite, SHOFU INC). Result: G0, DF, AV and TP were significantly affected by different materials (p < 0.001). The AV of FSU increased significantly after the 1-week water storage, then after the second bleaching cycle (p < 0.001). The TP for EUF slightly decreased (p = 0.019) after 1-week water storage, then increased throughout bleaching. Conclusion: Ageing/bleaching conditions do not affect G0, DF, AV and TP. The compositional variation between nano-filler composites resulted in a significant difference between materials.

Does Bleaching Affect the Microleakage of Class II Restoration with Bulk-Fill Composite?

Introduction

The use of technology in bulk-fill composites (BCs) has reduced the stresses caused by polymerization shrinkage, debonding, microleakage, or posttreatment sensitivity in them. This study was conducted to determine whether bleaching affects the microleakage of class II restoration with bulk-fill material.

Materials and Methods

This laboratory study was performed on 40 normal human premolars in 4 groups (n = 20). Class II cavities were prepared in mesial and distal surfaces of the teeth with dimensions of 2 × 2 × 4 mm. Then, based on the bleaching process by 20% carbamide peroxide gel and using two types of composites, the restored cavities were randomly divided into 4 groups: (1) CC without bleaching (CC group), (2) BC without bleaching (BC group), (3) CC with bleaching (CCB group), and (4) BC with bleaching (BCB group). Then, the samples were thermocycled for 1000 cycles at a temperature range of 5–55°C, and they were immersed in 0.6% alkaline fuchsine in order to penetrate into the pigment for 24 h. After cutting, the samples were placed under a stereomicroscope (40%) to determine microleakage. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a p value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

Results

Microleakage was determined in the CC group (0.97 ± 0.42), BC group (1.08 ± 0.54), CCB group (1.19 ± 0.37), and BCB group (0.30 ± 0.47). There were also no significant differences in the mean microleakage between the groups. No cases with zero microleakage (no microleakage) and grade 3 of microleakage (pigment penetration into the axial wall) were observed in the samples. Also, a two-by-two comparison of significant differences between CC and BC groups (p=0.89), CC and CCB groups (p=0.45), CC and BCB groups (p=0.11), BC and CCB groups (p=0.87), BC and BCB groups (p=0.41), and CCB and BCB groups (p=0.86) showed that the difference was not statistically significant.

Conclusion

Results showed no difference between microleakage of BC and CC with and without bleaching, and bleaching had the same effect on microleakage of these two types of composites.

The effect of a bleaching agent on the pigment removal and the bond strength of bulk-fill resin composites: an in vitro study

Abstract Introduction In order to simplify the technique, reduce the time required for direct adhesive restorations, bulk-fill resin composites have been developed be applied in bulk placement up to 4 mm increments. Objective Evaluating the color change (ΔE) and the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of bulk fill resin composites (BFRC) to dentin after the immersion in regular beverages and the application of bleaching systems. Method Forty-five human molar teeth were randomly distributed in three groups according to the filling material (n=15): Filtek Bulk Fill, Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill and Filtek Z100. The restored teeth were immersed in coffee, wine and distilled water (n=5) for 72 hours. The color parameters were measured using a spectrophotometer, having as basis the CIE L*a*b*, before and after tooth staining and application of bleaching processes. Subsequently, the teeth were sectioned to obtain the specimens for the microtensile testing. The ΔE values were analyzed applying the Kruskal-Wallis and the Wilcoxon tests, and the μTBS values were analyzed applying the ANOVA and the Bonferroni tests (p<0.05). Result There were no significant differences in the ∆E values when comparing the BFRCs to the conventional resin composite (CRC) in most of the experimental groups. The ∆E values did not present significant differences before and after the application of bleaching processes for all the tested resin composites. The BFRCs presented higher μTBS values than the CRC after exposure to distilled water, wine and bleaching agent. Conclusion The studied BFRCs presented similar color stability to the CRC. The BFRCs presented higher bond strength to the dentin than the CTC in most of the evaluated conditions. The bleaching agent was not effective in whitening the stained restored teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide bleaching induces changes in the physical properties of dental restorative materials: Effects of study protocols

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of study protocols on the effects of bleaching on the surface roughness, substance loss, flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), Weibull parameters, and color of 7 restorative materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The test materials included 4 composite resins, 1 glass-ionomer cement, 1 dental ceramic, and 1 polyacid-modified composite. The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 20) according to different study protocols: a bleaching group at 25°C (group 25B), a bleaching group at 37°C (group 37B), a control group at 25°C (group 25C), and a control group at 37°C (group 37C). The specimens in the bleaching group were treated with 40% hydrogen peroxide for 80 min at the respective environmental temperatures. The surface roughness, substance loss, FS, FM, and color of the specimens were measured before and after treatment. FS data were also subjected to Weibull analysis, which was used to estimate of the Weibull modulus (m) and the characteristic strength (σ₀ ).

RESULTS

Surface roughness increased and significant color changes were observed for all tested specimens after bleaching treatment, except for the ceramic. After bleaching at 37°C, the polyacid-modified composite showed significantly reduced FS, FM, m, and σ₀ values in comparison to the control specimens stored at 37°C in whole saliva. Significant differences were also found between the 37B and 25B polyacid-modified composite groups in terms of surface roughness, FS, m, σ₀ , and color changes.

CONCLUSIONS

Varying effects of bleaching on the physical properties of dental restorative materials were observed, and the influences of the study protocols on bleaching effects were found to be material-dependent.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The influence of study protocols on the effects of bleaching on the surface roughness, flexural properties, and color of dental restorative materials are material-dependent and should be considered when evaluating the effects of bleaching on dental restorative materials.
