Effects of Plasma Treatment on the Strength of Bonding to Ceramic Surfaces in Orthodontics-A Comprehensive Review

Over the past several decades, orthodontic treatment has been increasingly sought out by adults, many of whom have undergone restorative dental procedures that cover enamel. Because the characteristics of restorative materials differ from those of enamel, typical bonding techniques do not yield excellent restoration-bracket bonding strengths. Plasma treatment is an emerging surface treatment that could potentially improve bonding properties. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate currently available studies assessing the effect of plasma treatment on the shear bond strength (SBS) and failure mode of resin cement/composite on the surface of ceramic materials. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant studies, which were categorized by restorative material and plasma treatment types that were evaluated. It was determined that cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) treatment using helium and H2O gas was effective at raising the SBS of feldspathic porcelain to a bonding agent, while CAP treatment using helium gas might also be a potential treatment method for zirconia and other types of ceramics. More importantly, CAP treatment using helium has the potential for being carried out chairside due to its non-toxicity, low temperature, and short treatment time. However, because all the studies were conducted in vitro and not tested in an orthodontic setting, further research must be conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of specific plasma treatments in comparison to current orthodontic bonding treatments in vivo.

The enhanced shear bond strength of resin cement to zirconia with ordered conical spots through the CO2 laser process

In this study, a new shear bonding system was created that uses a CO₂ laser to form a pattern of conical spots on a zirconia prosthesis surface to improve mechanical interlocking. Four types of zirconia substrates were employed, which underwent particle abrasion after being polished, machined, spotted, and spot-particle abraded. The surface roughness of each substrate was measured via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). A shear bond strength test was performed with the zirconia-based material and a composite resin assuming abutment construction. XRD did not indicate that forming spots caused a phase transformation in zirconia with respect to machined zirconia. The shear bond strength was approximately twice that of the machined samples and approximately 2.3 times that of the samples that underwent particle and spot-particle abrasion. Surface modification by spotting improved the mechanical fitting force. However, no significant difference was observed between particle abrasion and spot-particle abrasion.

Aspects and Principles of Material Connections in Restorative Dentistry-A Comprehensive Review

The combination of two dissimilar materials has always been a serious problem in dentistry. In order to meet this challenge, it is necessary to combine both chemical methods (treatment with silanes, (meth)acrylic functional monomers) and the development of the surface of the joined material in a physical way, e.g., by sandblasting with alumina, alumina with silica, acid etching, the use of lasers and other means. The purpose of this literature review is to present all methods of joining dental composites with other materials such as ceramics, metal, another composite material. This review covers articles published within the period 2012-2022 in journals indexed in the PubMed database, written in English and describing joining different dental materials to each other. All the critical steps of new joint preparation have been addressed, including proper cleaning of the joint surface, the application of appropriate primers capable of forming a chemical bond between ceramics, zirconium oxide or metals and alloys, and finally, the application of new composite materials.
