Abstract
Aim To evaluate and compare volume and homogeneity of the three different root canal obturation systems. Materials and Methods Single-rooted premolar (n = 24) teeth samples were selected, and crowns were removed for standardization. Four groups are divided randomly as (n = 6), namely: For group I (single-cone gutta-percha obturation), group II (Beefill 2 in 1 obturation), group III (GuttaCore obturation), group IV (GuttaFlow bioseal obturation) and the root canal were subjected to prepare till X3 (protaper next) and subjected to micro-CT imaging. After completion of obturation, the image was taken by using micro-CT imaging. This is to evaluate the volume of filled obturation material in the canal space and the voided area sections, viz. the apical, middle, coronal, and third sections. Results Group III (GuttaCore obturation) showed the least significant mean of the difference in relation to the volume of the canal obturation (81.148). The least mean significant difference in area of voids in the canal region for apical (0.00133), middle (0.00233), and coronal thirds (0.00533). The most statistically significant difference is in the apical and middle thirds root canal space. Conclusion All the experimental groups showed significant differences in volume and voids in the obturation at three different levels, and the GuttaCore obturation systems occupied more of the volume with less voids in the prepared root canal space.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE An effective contrast agent for concurrent multimodal photoacoustic (PA) and ultrasound (US) imaging must have both high optical absorption and high echogenicity. Integrating a highly absorbing dye into the lipid shell of gas core nanobubbles (NBs) adds PA contrast to existing US contrast agents but may impact agent ultrasonic response. AIM We report on the development and ultrasonic characterization of lipid-shell stabilized C3F8 NBs with integrated Sudan Black (SB) B dye in the shell as dual-modal PA-US contrast agents. APPROACH Perfluoropropane NBs stabilized with a lipid shell including increasing concentrations of SB B dye were formulated by amalgamation (SBNBs). Physical properties of SBNBs were characterized using resonant mass measurement, transmission electron microscopy and pendant drop tensiometry. Concentrated bubble solutions were imaged for 8 min to assess signal decay. Diluted bubble solutions were stimulated by a focused transducer to determine the response of individual NBs to long cycle (30 cycle) US. For assessment of simultaneous multimodal contrast, bulk populations of SBNBs were imaged using a PA and US imaging platform. RESULTS We produced high agent yield (∼1011) with a mean diameter of ∼200 to 300 nm depending on SB loading. A 40% decrease in bubble yield was measured for solutions with 0.3 and 0.4 mg / ml SB. The addition of SB to the shell did not substantially affect NB size despite an increase in surface tension by up to 8 mN / m. The bubble decay rate increased after prolonged exposure (8 min) by dyed bubbles in comparison to their undyed counterparts (2.5-fold). SB in bubble shells increased gas exchange across the shell for long cycle US. PA imaging of these agents showed an increase in power (up to 10 dB) with increasing dye. CONCLUSIONS We added PA contrast function to NBs. The addition of SB increased gas exchange across the NB shell. This has important implications in their use as multimodal agents.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of ultrasonic vibration and thermo-hydrodynamic obturation (VibraTHO) using two types of root canal sealers, in comparison to the single-cone (SC) technique and a calcium silicate-based root canal sealer in complex root canal anatomies. Thirty single-rooted human maxillary premolars with two canals that had a complex root canal anatomy of transverse anastomoses or ramifications were prepared and assigned to the following three experimental groups, according to the filling method: SE group, SC technique with Endoseal TCS; VE group, VibraTHO with Endoseal TCS; and VG group, VibraTHO with GuttaFlow 2. Each tooth was scanned using micro-computed tomography, and the volume percentages of the filling material were calculated. The analysis of variance was used to analyze the statistical differences between the three groups (p < 0.05). The mean volume of the filling material was higher in the VG and VE groups than that in the SE group (p < 0.05) along the apical to middle-to-coronal thirds, and significant differences were observed between each root canal area (p < 0.05), with the only exception being at the apical thirds between the VE and SE groups. The VibraTHO technique using GuttaFlow 2 can be a more effective root canal filling method for anatomically complex root canal systems than the SC technique with Endoseal TCS. On the other hand, the VibraTHO technique using Endoseal TCS has a limited effect on improving the quality of the root filling at the apical portion of anatomically complex root canal systems, compared to the SC technique with Endoseal TCS.

Abstract
Canal filling must be well adapted to the walls of the root canal to prevent bacterial infiltration. Endodontic seals play an essential role in ensuring tightness, without which the canal filling would suffer infiltrations. This study aimed to evaluate the areas occupied by the two components of the canal filling, as well as the sealer/gutta-percha ratio in the root canals of the maxillary central incisors after their filling using the cold lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha. Thirty extracted upper central incisors were rotatably prepared with ProTaper Universal up to F3 and sealed using the cold lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha. After setting the sealer, the roots of the teeth were sectioned perpendicularly to 1 (L1), 3 (L3), 6 (L6), and 8 (L8) mm from the apex. The surface of the sections was analyzed with a Leica EZ4D stereomicroscope and photographed at two magnification orders: 10x and 25x. The areas corresponding to the gutta-percha, sealer, gaps, and root canal were expressed in pixels using the ImageJ software, version 1.50i. The difference in the representation of sealer areas, gutta-percha and voids was statistically significantly different for all four sections analyzed. The best adaptation of the canal obturation was observed in L1 and L3. The gutta-percha area was statistically significantly higher than that of the sealer for the L1, L3, and L6 levels, while the sealer/gutta-percha ratio recorded the lowest value at the L3 level (0, 30) and the highest at its L8 (0.70) level, without registering statistically significant differences regarding the area at the four analyzed levels. The voids were mostly absent or recorded a minimal percentage area (<1%). Cold lateral condensation of gutta-percha has led to a good adaptation of gutta-percha to the root canal wall, with a small amount of sealer, especially to the sections made at 3 mm from the apex. Given the limitations of this study, we noted that the voids were few – observed in the 6 and 8 mm sections – and were negligible in many cases.

Abstract
AIM To present a novel root canal filling technique: Ultrasonic Vibration & Thermo-Hydrodynamic Obturation (VibraTHO), and its rationale with a series of cases. SUMMARY The VibraTHO technique was used to fill the root canals of three clinically challenging cases: A C-shaped mandibular molar with complex anatomy, a C-shaped mandibular molar with an infected root canal system and a periapical lesion that required retreatment, and apically bifurcating mesiobuccal canals with a common orifice in a maxillary second molar. The cases were followed up for 15, 7 and 37 months, respectively. After follow-up, normal periapical status was observed without any noticeable radiographic change in the root canal fillings in each case. Periapical radiographs revealed complete healing of the periapical area in cases with pre-operative periapical lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The separated root canal instruments may affect the quality of root canal filling, hence the success of endodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of separated file fragments of nickel-titanium rotary systems with different cross-section, taper and motion characteristics on the apical sealer penetration in oval-shaped root canals via confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Distal roots of 60 mandibular molars with oval-shaped root canals were randomly divided into 4 groups as follows: group 1, FlexMaster Nickel Titanium Rotary File System (NTRFS) (separated instrument: 30/.06); group 2, ProTaper Next NTRFS (X3); group 3, ProTaper Universal NTRFS (F3); group 4, Revo-S NTRFS (AS30/.06). Root canals were filled with gutta-percha and AH plus labelled with 0.1% rhodamine B using a warm vertical compaction technique. Each specimen was horizontally sectioned at 1st, 3rd and 5th mm from apical foramen. Amount of maximum and average penetration depths, penetration percentage and sealer penetrated area were measured and analysed with one-way repeated measures of ANOVA and the Bonferroni post hoc tests. p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS The penetration depth, percentage and penetrated area of the sealer increased from apical to coronal in all systems. The maximum and average penetration depths and penetration areas were higher in FlexMaster and Revo-S groups at the 3rd mm (p < 0.05). At the 5th mm, the Revo-S group had a higher penetration percentage, when compared with ProTaper Next and ProTaper Universal groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In the 1st mm, separated fragments of any system did not allow the penetration of the sealer, while it was observed that the files with constant taper showed more positive results in terms of sealer penetration at apical 3rd and 5th mm. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In the presence of a separated file, the taper of the file might significantly affect the amount of penetrated sealer into the dentinal tubules as compared with the cross-section and motion characteristics of the file.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to prepare and obturate the curved canals of the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molar with four different file systems that is protaper hand files, rotary pro taper (RP) files, heroshaper hand files, and rotary hero shapers files and to evaluate the adaptation of their single-cone Gutta-percha by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods Eighty teeth were selected and were divided into two groups (G1A1, G1A2 and G2A1, G2A2 as hand and RP file system, G1A3, G1A4 and G2A3, G2A4 as hand and rotary hero shaper files system) of fourth teeth each. After access opening working length of the mesiobuccal canal was established. The distobuccal and palatal roots of the samples were removed using the diamond disc at the furcation level. "Endoanalyser" software was used to measure Schneider's angle on the preoperative radiograph. This angle was measured by drawing two lines-one parallel to the long axis of the canal, in the coronal third, and the second line from the apical foramen to intersect the point where the first line left the long axis of the canal. The canals of each group were then prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions for protaper hand files, RP files, heroshaper hand files, and rotary hero shapers files systems. Direct digital radiography image of all the samples was obtained. And then, the samples were exposed to CBCT to evaluate their single-cone adaptations. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20, IBM, Armonk, NY, United States of America. Results The null hypothesis that there will not be any gap area in the adaptation of their single-cone of different file system was rejected. Minimal gap area was seen in rotary hero shapers file system (0.001 mm2) and was maximum in hand protaper (HP) file system (0.015 mm2). Conclusion CBCT is a useful tool in detecting the gap area after obturation in curved canals. The HP single-cone adaptation showed the maximum gap area and rotary heroshaper single-cone adaptation showed the minimum gap area.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of technique on the filling quality of 2 recently introduced obturation systems comparatively with warm vertical compaction using micro-computed tomography. METHODS 36 single-rooted teeth were selected, root canals prepared, and assigned to 3 groups (n=12), according to the filling technique: warm vertical compaction technique WVC, GuttaCore (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK) and Gutta Fusion (VDW, Germany). Each specimen was scanned using a micro-CT. Percentage of voids was calculated and data statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis test with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS All obturations showed satisfactory similar results at the apical level. Differences between the three obturation methods were not significant at 1 mm (-p-value >0.05), 3 mm (-p-value >0.05) and 5 mm (-p-value >0.05). No root fillings were void-free. No significant difference was found between the WVC technique, the GuttaCore technique and the Gutta Fusion technique concerning percentage of apical voids regardless of canal level. CONCLUSION This study shows the efficiency of cross-linked obturators in filling root canals hermetically by comparing them to the warm vertical compaction technique. Results show that these obturation techniques were equally sufficient concerning apical adaptation making them appropriate to use in endodontic obturations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the canal fillings performed by thermoplastic technique (Herofill) and cold lateral condensation (CLC) techniques in oval shaped canals following self-adjusting file (SAF) preparation using radiological, stereological, and microscopic evaluation methods. Twelve pairs of oval-shaped root canals were prepared with SAF and filled using CLC (n = 12) or the Herofill system (n = 12). The quality of the root canal filling was evaluated by (i) scoring bidirectional storage phosphor plate images, (ii) stereological (volumetric) analysis of cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images, and (iii) microscopic analysis of the cross-sectioned area of the canal and gutta-percha via image analysis software. Chi-square test, t-test, and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used respectively (p < 0.05) for the aforementioned evaluations. 58.33% of the fillings (total n = 24) that were found to be sufficient in a bucco-lingual (BL) projection were considered insufficient in the mesio-distal (MD) projection according to radiological scoring. The difference in the findings between the two types of projections (BL and MD) was significant (p < 0.05). The results of the stereological evaluation of CBCT images and image analysis of cross-sections showed no statistically significant difference between the CLC and Herofill (p > 0.05). Herofill was not superior to cold lateral compaction. Stereology can be used to obtain unbiased information about the volume of root canal fillings. Both filling techniques failed to achieve the desirable goal of 0% empty volume in all of the cases and all evaluation systems confirmed this result. Technical quality of a matching-taper single-cone filling technique following rotary instrumentation compared with lateral compaction after manual preparation: a retrospective study. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study were to evaluate the radiographic technical quality of root canal treatment before and after the implementation of a nickel-titanium rotary (NiTiR) preparation followed by a matching-taper single-cone (mSC) obturation and to detect the procedural errors associated with this technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS A random sample of 535 patients received root canal treatment at the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at the University of Würzburg: 254 teeth were treated in 2002-2003 by using stainless steel instruments (SSI) for preparation and a lateral compaction (LC) technique (classic group (CG)). Two hundred eighty-one teeth were root filled in 2012-2013 employing NiTiR instruments for the root canal shaping and a mSC technique (advanced group (AG)). The quality assessments were based on the radiographic criteria of the European Society of Endodontology. The presence of voids was recorded separately for the apical, central and cervical thirds of the root canals. Procedural errors, such as ledges, apical transportations, perforations and fractured instruments, were detected. The root canal fillings in the CG and AG were compared using chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to investigate the association between the independent variables (patient age, tooth type and type of treatment) and the dependent variables (density and length). RESULTS Adequate length was achieved significantly more often in the AG compared to the CG for molars (p = 0.017), mandibular teeth (p = 0.013) and primary root canal treatments (p = 0.024). No significant difference was detected between the AG and CG regarding adequate length in general (p = 0.051) or adequate overall quality of root canal filling (p = 0.1). In the AG, a significant decrease in procedural errors was evident (p = 0.019) and decreases in the densities of the root canal fillings in the cervical (p = 0.01) and central (p = 0.01) thirds of the root canals were also observed. Moreover, root canals in elderly patients exhibited fewer voids (p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS Rotary root canal preparation followed by a matching-taper single-cone filling technique provides a reliable shaping of the root canal, with fewer procedural errors and a more acceptable filling quality in terms of length and homogeneity in the apical third. Less favourable results were achieved in the central and cervical parts of the root canals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The matching-taper single-cone technique seems to effectively obturate well-tapered root canals after adequate rotary instrumentation. Irregularly shaped canals require additional lateral or warm vertical condensation to avoid voids.

Abstract
The aim of the present micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) analysis was to compare the quality of obturation in the apical third of the root with the warm vertical compaction (WVC) and single matching taper sized cone (SMTSC) techniques. Mesial roots of 16 freshly extracted mandibular first molar teeth (with a total of 32 canals) were used. Canals in each mesial root were shaped to a size F3 Protaper and were randomly assigned to either continuous wave vertical compaction or single match tapered size cone technique. Volume of voids and gaps in the obturated roots were measured using micro-CT scanning at 1, 3, and 5 mm from the apex of the root. There was no statistically significant difference in the volume of voids measured at 1 mm (p > 0.05), 3 mm (p > 0.05) and 5 mm (p > 0.05) filled with either WVC and SMTSC techniques. The quality of obturation in the apical third of the root with the WVC and SMTSC techniques is comparable. SCANNING 38:352-356, 2016. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The volume of sealer in the apical 1 mm of teeth filled using different techniques was evaluated by micro-commuted tomography (micro-CT). Sixty-four maxillary central incisors were prepared using NiTi rotary instruments. Teeth were randomly distributed into four groups according to root canal sealers (AH Plus, Endofill, Sealapex, and Sealer 26) and subdivided into two subgroups according to the filling techniques (active and passive lateral condensation; n = 8 each). Subsequently, teeth were examined using the 1174 SkyScan micro-CT device. Images were reconstructed using the NRecon software, and the sealer volume (mm3) in the apical region was analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Student-Newman-Keuls test (α = 0.05). The lowest volume of sealer was observed in teeth filled with Sealapex (0.100 ± 0.009) and Endofill (0.103 ± 0.010). The highest volume was observed in teeth filled with AH Plus (0.112 ± 0.008) and Sealer 26 (0.109 ± 0.018) (p > 0.05). Regarding the filling technique, a lower sealer volume was observed using the active lateral condensation technique compared with that using the passive lateral condensation technique (0.100 ± 0.010 vs. 0.111 ± 0.012) (p < 0.05). Therefore, the lowest volume of sealer was observed in teeth filled with Sealapex and Endofill using the active lateral condensation technique.

Abstract
AIM To compare the technical quality and long-term outcomes of root canal treatment by general practitioners of a Swedish Public Dental Service, before and after an endodontic education including Ni-Ti rotary technique (NiTiR). METHODOLOGY A random sample was compiled, comprising one root filled tooth from each of 830 patients, treated by 69 general practitioners participating in the education: 414 teeth root filled in 2002, pre-education, using primarily stainless steel instrumentation and filling by lateral compaction, and 416 teeth root filled post-education (2005), using mainly NiTiR and single-cone obturation. Follow-up radiographs taken in 2009 were evaluated alongside immediate post-filling radiographs from 2002 to 2005. The density and length of the root fillings were registered. Periapical status was assessed by the Periapical Index (PAI), using two definitions of disease: apical periodontitis (AP) (PAI 3 + 4 + 5) and definite AP (PAI 4 + 5). Tooth survival was registered. Root fillings pre- and post-education were compared using chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Crude extraction rates per 100 years were calculated for comparison of tooth survival. Explanatory variables (type of tooth, root filling quality, periapical status, marginal bone loss, type and quality of coronal restoration) in relation to the dependent variable (AP at follow-up) were analysed by multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS Follow-up data were available for 229 (55%) of teeth treated pre- and 288 (69%) treated post-education: both tooth survival (P < 0.001) and root filling quality were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the latter. However, there was no corresponding improvement in periapical status. Both pre- and post-education, root fillings with definite AP on completion of treatment had significantly higher odds of AP or definite AP at follow-up. For teeth treated post-education, inadequate root filling quality was significantly associated with AP at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Despite a higher tooth survival rate and a significant improvement in technical quality of root fillings after the education, there was no corresponding improvement in periapical status.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to measure the percentage of root canal fillings in long oval canals obturated with thermoplasticized gutta-percha techniques, Beefill 2in1® and Thermafil Obturators®. Material and Methods Fifty four mandibular incisors were selected after bucco-lingual and mesio-distal radiographs showed at 5 mm from apex an internal long:short diameter ≥2. Teeth were instrumented with Protaper Universal and divided in two groups of 27. Group 1 was obturated with Thermafil Obturators® and group 2 with Beefill 2in1®. Two horizontal sections were cut at 5 and 7 mm from the apex and photographed in a stereo-microscope. The total area of the canal and filled canal in cross-sections were measured with AutoCad and the percentages of gutta-percha-sealer and voids in the canal were obtained. Results Both systems achieved high percentage of filled canal, Thermafil 96.8% and Beefill 2in1 98.9%. The percentages of voids in both groups were very low. No significant differences were found between the two groups . The percentage obtained at 5 and 7 mm from the apex in both groups showed no significant difference. Conclusions The percentages of filled canal (gutta-percha-sealer) were high and these two thermoplasticized techniques are suitable for long oval canals obturation. Abstract
Objective. The aim of this study was to compare the presence of voids in root fillings performed in oval and ribbon-shaped canals with two root filling techniques, lateral compaction technique (LCT) or hybrid technique (HT), a combination of a gutta-percha masterpoint and thermoplastic gutta-percha. Furthermore, the obturation time for the two techniques was evaluated. Materials and methods. Sixty-seven roots with oval and ribbon-shaped canals were prepared using Profile Ni-Ti rotary files. After preparation, the roots were randomly allocated to two groups according to root filling technique. All roots were filled with AH plus and gutta-percha. Group 1 was filled using LCT (n = 34) and group 2 was filled using HT (n = 33). The obturation time was measured in 30 cases evenly distributed between the two techniques. Voids in relation to the root canal fillings were assessed using cross-section images from Micro-computed Tomography scans. Results. All root canal fillings had voids. Permutation test showed no statistically significant difference between the two root filling techniques in relation to presence of voids (p = 0.092). A statistically significant difference in obturation time between the two techniques was found (p < 0.001). Conclusion. The present study found no statistically significant difference in percentage of voids between two root filling techniques. A 40% reduction in obturation time was found for the HT compared to the LCT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to analyze the formation of voids and gaps in root canals obturated with different sealer materials in combination with warm gutta-percha vertical compaction technique by using BeeFill® 2in1. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-four single-rooted teeth were collected, and root canals were prepared by using rotary files. All teeth were randomly allocated into three groups. Each group was obturated by using the BeeFill® 2in1 system in combination with Sealapex (non-eugenol, calcium hydroxide polymeric root canal sealer; Kerr Sybron, USA), RoekoSeal (polydimethylsiloxane-based sealer; Roeko, Germany), or 2Seal (epoxy-amine resin-based sealer; VDW, Germany). Following preparation, all teeth were scanned with a micro-computed tomography (CT) scanner, and a three-dimensional reconstruction of the obturated root canals was performed to analyze the volume of interface voids and gaps in the obturated teeth. RESULTS Statistical analysis demonstrated that the silicon-based sealer RoekoSeal induced significantly less voids and gaps than other tested materials. The amount of voids and gaps significantly was higher in the apical region. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate that none of the root canal-filled teeth were free of gaps. Teeth obturated with RoekoSeal demonstrated to have the highest quality in terms of voids and gaps formation in combination with the BeeFill® 2in1 obturation system. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These findings point to the potential benefit of micro-CT analyses for in vitro evaluation of root canal obturation systems and provide further information about sealer materials used in combination with a warm gutta-percha vertical compaction technique.

Abstract
Azo and diazo compounds include Sudan dyes, which were widely used in industry. Although they are not permitted in food, they had been found contaminating different food products and their presence is investigated regularly (since 2003) in these products. Sudan III, as well as Sudan Black B, was included in different laboratory techniques for tissue ceroid and lipofucsin analysis and blood-cell staining. Also, Sudan Black B has been recently included in in vivo evaluations in human beings (through oral intake), and Sudan III is still allowed in cosmetics. These azo dyes were metabolized to possible carcinogenic colorless amines, both in the liver of mammalians and by the micro flora present in human skin and the gastrointestinal tract. Both human and laboratory animal cytochrome P450s (CYPs) were able to oxidize Sudan I, whereas Sudan III modified CYP activities. In vitro genotoxic effects were reported for Sudan I, and some DNA adducts formed through exposure to its metabolites were identified. Sudan I was also found to be carcinogenic in the rat, but not in the mouse. The aim of the present review is to put together the most relevant information concerning Sudan dye uses and toxicity to provide some tools for the identification of the risk they represent for human health.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the percentage of gutta-percha (PGP) in mesial root canals of mandibular molars obturated with LC (Lateral Compaction) or SC (Single Cone) ProTaper Universal System techniques at different levels of the root. Mesial root canals of 20 human permanent molars with similar anatomical characteristics were instrumented using the ProTaper Universal rotary system technique until the F2 instrument, with 20 canals filled by SC ProTaper Universal technique and 20 canals by the LC technique. The mesial roots were sectioned transversely to 3, 5, and 7 mm from the root apex. Digital images of specimens were obtained at MIC-D digital microscope in increases of 30 to 35X. The gutta-percha area was measured using ImageTool software. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). The SC technique provided greater PGP than the LC technique in the apical third (3 mm) (P < 0.001). In the other thirds (5 and 7 mm) there was no statistical difference between the two techniques regarding the PGP (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between thirds of the root canal for both techniques (P > 0.05). It was concluded that SC technique provided greater PGP than the LC technique in the apical third of mesial root canals of mandibular molars. There was no difference between the two techniques regarding the PGP in the cervical and middle thirds.

Abstract
Core carrier techniques are unique among the various root canal filling techniques for delivering and compacting gutta-percha in the prepared root canal system. Thermafil (TF), considered the major core carrier device, is provided as an obturator consisting of a master core coated with thermoplasticized gutta-percha. We have devised a thermoplasticized gutta-percha filling technique using a polypropylene core, FlexPoint® NEO (FP), which was developed as a canal filling material that can be sterilized in an autoclave. Therefore, FP can be coated onto thermoplasticized gutta-percha and inserted into the prepared canal as a core carrier. The FP core carrier technique offers many advantages over the TF system: the core can be tested in the root canal and verified radiographically; the core can be adjusted to fit and surplus material easily removed; furthermore the core can be easily removed for retreatment. The clinical procedure of the FP core carrier technique is simple, and similar that with the TF system. Thermoplasticized gutta-percha in a syringe is heated in an oven and extruded onto the FP core carrier after a trial insertion. The FP core carrier is inserted into the root canal to the working length. Excess FP is then removed with a red-hot plastic instrument at the orifice of the root canal. The FP core carrier technique incorporates the clinical advantages of the existing TF system while minimizing the disadvantages. Hence the FP core carrier technique is very useful in clinical practice. This paper describes the FP core carrier technique as a new core based method.
