Abstract
Nanopolystyrene (NP) and cadmium (Cd) are ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic systems. The present study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of exposure to ambient concentrations of NP and/or Cd on the intestinal tract of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Exposure to NP and/or Cd induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by a significant increase in lipid peroxide content (LPO), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and peroxidase activity (POD), and significant decreases in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activities in E. sinensis. In addition, exposure to NP and/or Cd imbalanced the homeostasis of the intestinal microbiota, as demonstrated by the significantly increased abundance of Spiroplasma. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were performed to investigate the mechanisms underlying intestinal toxicity. Our results showed that ferroptosis, ABC transporters, phosphotransferase system, apoptosis, and leukocyte transendothelial migration were disturbed after exposure to NP and/or Cd. In particular, Cd exposure affected mucin type O-glycan biosynthesis, purine metabolism, and neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction. Intriguingly, co-exposure to NP and Cd might mitigate intestinal toxicity by decreasing oxidative stress and affecting these pathways. Taken together, our study clearly demonstrates that exposure to NP and/or Cd at environmentally relevant concentrations causes intestinal toxicity in E. sinensis.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that microbiomes have been shaping the evolutionary pathways of macroorganisms for millennia and that these tiny symbionts can influence, and possibly even control, species interactions like host-parasite relationships. Yet, while studies have investigated host-parasites and microbiomes separately, little has been done to understand all three groups synergistically. Here, we collected infected and uninfected Eurypanopeus depressus crab hosts from a coastal North Carolina oyster reef three times over 4 months. Infected crabs demonstrated an external stage of the rhizocephalan parasite, Loxothylacus panopaei. Community analyses revealed that microbial richness and diversity were significantly different among tissue types (uninfected crab, infected crab, parasite externae and parasite larvae) and over time (summer and fall). Specifically, the microbial communities from parasite externae and larvae had similar microbiomes that were consistent through time. Infected crabs demonstrated microbial communities spanning those of their host and parasite, while uninfected crabs showed more distinctive communities with greater variability over time. Microbial communities were also found to be indicators of early-stage infections. Resolving the microbial community composition of a host and its parasite is an important step in understanding the microbiome's role in the host-parasite relationship and determining how this tripartite relationship impacts coevolutionary processes.

Abstract
Introduction The mud crab, Scylla paramamosain, holds great commercial significance as a marine crustacean widely cultivated in the Indo-Pacific region. Understanding the core gut microbiota of aquatic animals is crucial for their overall health and growth, yet the core gut microbiota of mud crab remains poorly characterized. Methods In this study, we gathered gut samples from mud crabs across five locations within Sanmen Bay, China. Through the utilization of high-throughput sequencing, we delved into the composition of the gut microbial community and identified the core gut microbiome of mud crab. Results Our results demonstrate that the gut microbial diversity of mud crab did not exhibit significant variation among the five sampling sites, although there were some differences in community richness. At the phylum level, we identified 35 representative phyla, with Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Campilobacterota as the dominant phyla. Among the 815 representative genera, we discovered 19 core genera, which accounted for 65.45% of the total sequences. These core genera were distributed across 6 phyla, and among them, Photobacterium exhibited the highest average relative abundance. Discussion Photobacterium has probiotic activity and may play a crucial role in enhancing the immune response of the host and maintaining the diversity of the gut microbiota. Moreover, we observed a positive correlation between the relative abundance of core genera and the stability of the gut microbial community. Furthermore, our findings revealed distinct differences in gut microbial composition and specific taxa between the sexes of mud crab. These differences subsequently influenced the functionality of the gut microbial community. Overall, our investigation sheds light on the core gut microbiota of mud crab, emphasizing the importance of core gut microbial communities in maintaining the health and growth of these commercially significant marine crustaceans.

Abstract
The change in temperature will change the composition of intestinal microorganisms of juvenile Eriocheir sinensis, and the composition of intestinal microorganisms will affect the growth and development of juvenile crabs. In order to explore the relationship between intestinal microorganisms and growth of E. sinensis at different temperatures, the status of growth and intestinal microflora of juvenile E. sinensis reared at different water temperatures (15 °C, 23 °C, and 30 °C) were compared in this study. The results showed that the respective survival rate of juvenile E. sinensis in the three water temperature groups was 100%, 87.5%, and 64.44%. Moreover, the molting rate increased with an increase in water temperature, which was at 0%, 10%, and 71.11% for the three respective temperature groups. The average weight gain rate showed an overall increasing trend with the increase of water temperature. Moreover, the final fatness of the crabs in the 30 °C water temperature group was significantly lower than that in the 15 °C and 23 °C groups (p < 0.05); there was no significant difference in the liver-to-body ratio among the three groups. The results of the alpha diversity analysis of the 16S rRNA data revealed that there was no significant difference in the intestinal microbial abundance among the three water temperature groups; however, the intestinal microbial diversity in the 23 °C water temperature group was significantly lower than that in the 15 °C and 30 °C groups. At the phylum level, the dominant flora of the three groups was Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota. At the genus level, the abundance of Parabacteroides and Aeromonas in the intestine of the crabs in the 30 °C water temperature group was significantly higher than that in the 15 °C and 23 °C groups (p < 0.05). The function prediction showed that the main functional diversity of intestinal microflora of juvenile E. sinensis in the three water temperature groups was similar and mainly involved in metabolic-related functions, but there were still differences in the effects of water temperature on functional pathways such as metabolism, immunity, and growth among each group, either promoting or inhibiting. In conclusion, different water temperatures can affect the composition and function of intestinal flora of E. sinensis, and 23 °C-30 °C is the optimal water temperature for the growth of juvenile E. sinensis.

Abstract
Introduction The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a highly valued freshwater crustacean in China. While the natural shell color of E. sinensis is greenish brown (GH), we found a variety with a brownish-orange shell color (RH). Although RH is more expensive, it exhibits a lower molting frequency and growth rate compared with GH, which significantly reduces its yield and hinders large-scale farming. The growth and development of animals are closely related to their gut microbiota and gut tissue metabolic profiles. Methods In this study, we compared the gut microbiome communities and metabolic profiles of juvenile RH and GH crabs using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), respectively. Results Our findings indicated that the intestinal microbial composition and metabolic characteristics of E. sinensis differed significantly between RH and GH. At the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) level, the α-diversity of the gut microbiota did not differ significantly between RH and GH, while the β-diversity of the RH gut microbiota was higher than that of the GH gut microbiota. At the species level, the richness of unclassified_c_Alphaproteobacteria was significantly higher in the GH group, while the RH group had a significantly higher richness of three low-abundance species, Flavobacteria bacterium BAL38, Paraburkholderia ferrariae, and uncultured_bacterium_g__Legionella. In the current study, 598 gut tissue metabolites were identified, and 159 metabolites were significantly different between GH and RH. The metabolite profile of RH was characteristic of a low level of most amino acids and lipid metabolites and a high level of several pigments compared with that of GH. These metabolites were enriched in 102 KEGG pathways. Four pathways, including (1) Central carbon metabolism in cancer, (2) protein digestion and absorption, (3) alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, and (4) aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, were significantly enriched. The correlation analysis between metabolites and microbiotas indicated that most key differential metabolites were positively correlated with the abundance of Shewanella_sp_MR-7. Discussion This research provided a greater understanding of the physiological conditions of E. sinensis varieties with different shell colors by comparing the gut microbiota and gut tissue metabolome.

Abstract
E. sinensis, normally harvested in October and November, is an economic aquatic product in China. Pond culture has been widely applied for the production of E. sinensis, wherein a stable food supply for crabs is provided. In order to improve the nutritional quality of E. sinensis products, this study evaluated the effect of the local pond culture on the nutritive profiles of E. sinensis and screened out the best harvest time for the nutrient-rich crabs, thereby guiding the local crab industry to improve its aquaculture mode and harvest strategy. The results indicated that pond culture enhanced the levels of protein, amino acids, and specific organic acid derivatives, and reduced the levels of peptides and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Compared with E. sinensis harvested in October, peptide levels were significantly increased, whereas sugar, phenolic acid, and nucleotide levels were decreased in those harvested in November. Overall, the study revealed that the nutritive profile of the pond-reared E. sinensis was significantly modulated by a high-protein diet, thus lacking the diversity of metabolites. Additionally, October could be more appropriate for harvesting E. sinensis than November.

Abstract
Consumers' perception of volatiles determines their preferences and choices of food. Furthermore, various factors, such as varieties, origin, gender, and edible parts, may influence volatiles. The perception of edible parts of E. sinensis in two origins (Chongming and Taixing) regarding overall hedonic score (9-points), just-about-right scale (5-points), and intensity of attributes (7-points) were analyzed. The results showed that consumers preferred the hepatopancreas odor of female crabs in Chongming, with an overall preference of 6.84 and RMAT (calculate the R-index by matrix) values >52.93%. The crabs' origin (different feeding and rearing condition) was the primary reason for the odor profiles. The appropriate meaty and toasted odor in the hepatopancreas increased the overall preference by approximately 14.65-20.60%. Furthermore, 2-acetylthiazole, a volatile compound with a fatty odor, may significantly affect preferences and consumption behavior.

Abstract
Antibiotics have been widely used to inhibit microbial growth and to control bacterial infection; however, they can trigger an imbalance in the gut flora of the host and dysregulate the host gene regulatory system when discharged into the aquatic environment. We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to a low concentration of erythromycin and ampicillin, focusing on gut microbiome and global gene expression profiles from Korea native ricefish (Oryzias latipes). The proportion of Proteobacteria (especially the opportunistic pathogen Aeromonas veronii) was significantly increased in the ricefish under the chronic exposure to erythromycin and ampicillin, whereas that of other bacterial phyla (i.e., Fusobacteria) decreased. In addition, the expression of genes involved in immune responses such as chemokines and immunocyte chemotaxis was significantly influenced in ricefish in the aquatic environment with antibiotics present. These results show that the internal microbial flora and the host gene expression are susceptible even at a low concentration of chronic antibiotics in the environment, supporting the importance of the appropriate use of antibiotic dose to maintain the sustainable and healthy aquaculture industry and water ecosystem.

Abstract
The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a popular aquaculture product in East Asia, especially in China. In the last decade, rice-crab co-culture has rapidly expanded in China. Under this model, crabs are raised in rice fields instead of in traditional aquaculture ponds. In this study, we cultured two varieties of Chinese mitten crabs (Changjiang and Liaohe) in an alkaline region in northwest China and used Illumina MiSeq sequencing to compare the intestinal bacterial alpha diversity and community structure between traditional and co-culture aquaculture models, between two crab varieties, and between female and male crabs. Significant variations in intestinal bacterial communities were found between crab varieties and between female and male crabs but not between aquaculture models. These results show that rice-crab co-culture operations did not obviously impact the crab intestinal bacterial community compared with traditional pond aquaculture. Firmicutes was the most abundant bacterial phylum in the crab intestines (78%, relative abundance). Three dominant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) represented 73.2% of Firmicutes sequences and 56.8% of all sequences. A dominant OTU assigned as Firmicutes that was negatively correlated with crab body length, width, and weight was found in the source water for the experimental area. The results of this study suggest that the aquaculture of Chinese mitten crabs in alkaline regions requires more study to improve cultivation techniques.
