Examining the influence of occupational characteristics, gender and work-life balance on IT professionals' occupational satisfaction and occupational commitment

Purpose

In response to the tech skills gap, this research paper aims to examine the influence of occupational characteristics, gender and work-life balance on IT professionals' satisfaction with and commitment to their chosen occupation. In addition, the authors explore occupational differences across these investigated factors.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employed a survey research method and partial least squares (PLS) modeling using 293 responses collected from professionals representing five clusters of Information Technology (IT) occupations. Authors further conducted exploratory post-hoc analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests to check for significant differences in key constructs across five IT occupational clusters.

Findings

Occupational characteristics were found to be significantly related to respondents' occupational satisfaction while work-life balance was associated with their level of occupational commitment. Authors also found that that the influence of work-life balance on occupational commitment was more positive for females than for males. Finally, significant differences were found for task significance, task variety, task autonomy, work-life balance and compensation across the five occupational clusters examined.

Originality/value

A key contribution of this study is the focus on IT professionals' satisfaction with and commitment to their chosen occupation rather than a job, organization or profession. Accordingly, the authors contribute a nuanced understanding of an occupation as a facet of job, professional and career outcomes. Authors also explore how gender moderates the influence of work-life balance on occupational commitment. Finally, rather than treating the IT profession as a unified whole as has been done in most prior studies, authors explore satisfaction and commitment related differences across occupational clusters.

Analysis on the Influence Path of User Knowledge Withholding in Virtual Academic Community - Based on Structural Equation Method-Artificial Neural Network Model

The phenomenon of knowledge withholding is a vital issue that undermines knowledge sharing and innovation, hinders the development of offline and online organizations. Clarifying the relationship between influencing factors and knowledge withholding is significant to improve the phenomenon of knowledge withholding in offline and online organizations. Few types of research focus on the online virtual academic community and integrate the three factors of knowledge, individual, and environment to research knowledge withholding. To solve the limitation, this research is based on sociology and psychology-related theories. The two dimensions of enabling and inhibition are divided into factors affecting knowledge withholding. An attempt is made to explore the path between the three types of factors influencing knowledge, individual and environment, and knowledge withholding. This study collected data from 616 users in China's virtual academic community. It used a structural equation model combined with a cross-layer connected neural network to conduct an empirical analysis on the proposed hypothesis. The results found that: in the virtual academic community, knowledge power in the enabling dimension is the main reason for users to form knowledge psychological ownership, which affects users' knowledge withholding. However, the effect of professional commitment on users' knowledge psychological ownership is not significant. After SEM-ANN model fitting, the combined inhibitory effect of community privacy protection and community reciprocity on user knowledge withholding in the inhibition dimension is significantly improved. This research has a specific guiding significance for enhancing the knowledge withholding phenomenon of the virtual academic community and creating an excellent academic exchange atmosphere.

Study of Predictors of Organizational Effectiveness among Private and Public Sector IT Companies

Human relations experts have shown tremendous interest in determining the variables that enhance workers’ satisfaction and their loyalty to organisation because only committed and qualified personnel can facilitate the organization to attain statures of effectiveness. The present research is performed to study job satisfaction, organisational commitment and climate as predictors of organisational effectiveness wherein job commitment is studied as mediator in this relationship. Using structured questionnaires on seven-point Likert scale, data was obtained from 581 respondents using convenient sampling method from IT sector. Results indicated that both Job satisfaction as well as organisational climate is positively associated with effectiveness. The association between job satisfaction and effectiveness is completely mediated by commitment and organizational climate and effectiveness. This research has implications for decision makers in IT sector for attaining higher effectiveness and issues related to employee’s job satisfaction and favourable climate may also be addressed.

Exploring the Relationship Between Satisfaction and Intention to Stay Among Millennial Employees

Purpose: The main purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction, organizational commitment and intention to stay among the millennials working in IT organizations of North India. Research methodology: The present study has adopted descriptive research design and purposive sampling technique was used to gather data from 396 respondents with the help of a structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS and PLS-SEM. Findings: Findings revealed that job satisfaction has a significant impact on organizational commitment (β=0.457, p<0.05) and intention to stay (β=0.596, p<0.05). It was also revealed that managerial support moderates the relationship between job satisfaction and intention to stay. Originality: This study is one of the few empirical studies that have investigated the perception of millennials about their intention to stay in IT sector. The study will be beneficial for the HR experts in improving the employees’ intention to stay by focusing on giving support to their employees.
