Preparation and Characterization of Magnetite Nanoparticles

Sequestration of chromium(vi) and nickel(ii) heavy metals from unhygienic water via sustainable and innovative magnetic nanotechnology

In a stride towards sustainable solutions, this research endeavors to address the critical issue of water pollution via heavy metals by coupling the power of magnetic nanotechnology, in combination with a green chemistry approach, to eliminate two noxious inorganic pollutants: chromium(vi) and nickel(ii) from aqueous environments. The synthesis of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles was achieved using ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O) as a precursor, with the assistance of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. leaves extract, known for its remarkable salt-reducing properties. A range of bio-adsorbents, derived from corncob biomass, corncob pyrolyzed biochar, and magnetite/corncob biochar nanocomposite (NC), were engineered for their eco-friendly and biocompatible characteristics. Extensive parametric optimizations, including variations in pH, contact time, dose rate, and concentration, were carried out to gain insights into the adsorption behavior and capacity of these bioadsorbents concerning Cr(vi) and Ni(ii). Equilibrium and kinetic studies were undertaken to comprehensively understand the adsorption dynamics. In the case of Ni(ii), the Freundlich isotherm model provided a satisfactory fit for all bio-adsorbents, demonstrating R2 values of 0.91, 0.95, and 0.96 for BM, BC, and NC, respectively. Furthermore, the pseudo 1st order model emerged as the most suitable fit for Cr(vi) sequestration in corncob BM with an R2 value of 0.98, while pseudo 2nd order models were robustly fitted for BC and NC, yielding R2 values of 0.88 and 0.99, respectively. The magnetite/corncob nanocomposite outperformed other bioadsorbents in removing heavy metals from wastewater due to its environmental friendliness, larger surface area, reusability, and cost-effectiveness at an industrial scale.

Facile synthesis of Al/Fe bimetallic (oxyhydr)oxide-coated magnetite for efficient removal of fluoride from water

In this work, we developed a novel magnetic bimetallic Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide adsorbent through a facile and cost-effective method and explored its potential to adsorb fluoride in water. Its synthesis involved corrosion of natural magnetite in aluminium chloride solution, followed by titration with NaOH solution for in-situ synthesis of Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide-coated magnetite (Mag@Al₂Fe). Characterization data indicated a uniform coating of Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide on magnetite, and the resulting composite possessed large specific surface area (∼90 m²/g) and good magnetic property. In batch adsorption experiments, the isotherm and kinetic data fitted well to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Mag@Al₂Fe is 26.5 mg/g, which was much higher than natural magnetite (0.44 mg/g). Moreover, this material retained high adsorption capacity toward fluoride within a wide pH range (3.0-8.0) and offered facile magnetic separation from water. Influence of competing ions was also evaluated which showed that the presence of Cl^- and NO₃ ^- posed negligible interference, while HCO₃ ^- and SO₄ ^2- had negative effects on fluoride adsorption. Thermodynamic investigations revealed that fluoride adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous. The observed increase in solution pH and formation of Al-F and Fe-F bonds (as indicated by XPS analysis) after fluoride adsorption suggested the major adsorption mechanism of ligand exchange. Besides, the adsorption/desorption cycle studies demonstrated the well-retained performance of Mag@Al₂Fe for repeated application after regeneration by 0.5 mol/L NaOH solution. Facile synthesis, high defluoridation, lower cost, and quick separation of Mag@Al₂Fe indicates its promising potential for drinking water defluoridation.

Complex of TNF-α and Modified Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Suppresses Tumor Growth by Magnetic Induction Hyperthermia

BACKGROUND

Magnetic nanoparticles are increasingly applied in clinical area for drug delivery, also in magnetic induction hyperthermia (MIH), and so on. The present research would prepare appropriately modified superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to conduct MIH and transfect the anticancer cytokine TNF-α into cells.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The SPIONs were surface-modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) and/or protamine sulfate (PRO). The combined MIH using SPIONs and gene therapy were applied to treat Hep G2 cells and tumor model transplanted in nude mice.

RESULTS

The PRO-SPIONs (the surfaces were sequentially modified by APTS and PRO) showed high transfection efficiency for TNF-α gene with no obvious cytotoxicity. It also exhibited great temperature rising performance under alternating current magnetic field. The combined MIH and gene therapy using PRO-SPIONs/TNF-α complex could reduce cell variability of Hep G2 cells and tumor size transplanted in nude mice.

CONCLUSIONS

The PRO-SPIONs efficiently transfect the TNF-α gene into Hep G2 cells. Cells expressed more TNF-α when they were exposed to alternating current magnetic field only once. Combined MIH and gene therapy for treatment in vivo exhibited better effects than MIH or gene therapy alone. The combined MIH and gene therapy is promising in liver cancer treatment.
